dear friends. i was searching for something & i landed here. but iti s a very interesting topic .
most of the people neglected. the FAMOUS MANIKKODI WRITERS.STARTING FROM VA.RAA,T.JANAKIRAMAN, THI.JA.RA.,B.S.RAMAIYA,P.M.KANNAN,SANKARRAM,
NA.PICHAMURTHY ETC.,
THEN THE HUMOROUS THUPARIYUM SAAMBU BY DEVAN
WASHINGTONIL THIRUMANAM BY SAAVI
WHOLE RANGE OF APPUSAMI STORIES BY BAGHYAM RAMASWAMY(JA.RA.SUNDARESAN).
FROM THE LIST I CAME TO KNOW PEOPLE MAINLY READ
SEROIUS STORIES & HISTORIC NOVELS
IN OUR TAMIL THERE ARE LOT OF HUMOUROUS NOVELS ARE
ALSO PUBLISHED. IN FACT LOT OF KALKI'S VIMARSANAM
USED TO BE SATIRICAL. PEOPLE GIVE IMPORATANCE TO P.G.WAODEHOUSE & R.K. NARAYAN TYPE OF
NOVELS & WHY NOT WE TAMILS. AT THE MOST WE LIKE SUJAATHA'S HUMOUR.
IF ITS IS REAL SERIOUS GO TO
MANIKKODI WRITERS,PUDUMAIPITHTHAN,&JAYAKANTHAN.
IN LAKSHMI,ANUTHAMA,RAJAM KRISHNAN,& ANURADHA RAMANAN,USHA SUBRAMANIAM,GEETHA BENNET ONE CAN SEE THE NOVELS FROM A WOMEN'S
PASSIONATE AFFECTIONATE FAMILY ANGLE.BUT PEOPLE TALK MORE ABOUT SIVASANKARI & INDHUMATHI BECAUSE THEY WERE MORE COMMUNICATIVE TO THE LITERARY WORLD( MADE MORE NOISES.
IF ANY ONE NEED MORE I AM READY TO PARTICIPATE IN THE DIALOGUE BECAUSE I AM FROM A TAMIL NOVELIST'S FAMILY

Hello Friends,
I happened to see this forum and wish you all the best for all your endeavours. I have read some of the novels in Tamil. I would rate the novels in this order. I have not read as many as of our folks on the forum.
1. Manipallavam - By Naa Parthasarathi.
2. Ponniyin Selvan - By Kalki.
3. Sivakamiyin Sabadam - By Kalki.
1. Manipallavam - By Naa Parthasarathi.
I would rank "Manipallavam" as first because, in my knowledge, this is the first novel to tear the the idea of historical novels being related to Kings and queens. In that novel, Naa Parthasarathi has depicted ElanKumaran as a hero- very dynamic in nature, shrewed in behaving, vivid in understanding philosophy etc. Poompuhar and Indravizha were narrated in greater detail, without ever touching the idea of King, which was once considered as the base for historical novels.
2. Ponniyin Selvan By Kalki.
Ponniyin Selvan is the masterpiece of Kalki. Only some people have the ability to deliver things through writing as it would be in real world. Kalki is top amongst them. He has narrated how Vandhiyathevan has felt when he walked his horse along the "Kollidam" river on his first chapter, as if Kalki has seen Vandhiyathevan riding his horse. Azhwarkkadiyan, Kundhavai, Kandhamaran, Vanathi, Pazhuvetaraiyargal, Adhitta Karikalan, RajaRajan etc., were so natural that Kalki gave them life back. So much of communication and expression. To write the same theme by different author would have spoilt the novel. Credit goes to Kalki.
3. Sivakamiyin Sabadam.
Here too, Kalki shows himself. He gives life to Mahendiravarma Pallavan, Narasimha Pallavan, Sivakami and Naaga Nandhi. The greatness of his writing lies in the fact that he could bring the charecters before the eyes of everyone who reads it. Those places where Kalki has written about the thoughts of Sivakami are very excellent. Kalki will show Sivakami with two diagonally opposite mental makeups before and after her meeting with either Naaga Nandhi or Mahendra Varma. This shows his ability to write effectively.

I don't think I can rate the Tamil novels. As far as my knowledge goes, each one of the writers and their novels give us a unique message. The writings of Balakumaran is very practical and down to earth. Jayakanthan deals mainly with the complexities of human mind and thoughts. Sandilyan, as everybody knows, is the best historical novelist with his stories about romance, technology, and war strategy. So I don't think any rating is necessary, why don't you just put in all the books which ever possibly you can get hold of. I would love that.

Hi,
I also read lots of tamil novels and agree with the listings of best novels in general. I admire Sujatha; but his novels like Juno can not be listed in best novels of the century. JK, Nirvana Nagaram, Ethayum orumurai, Sivantha Kaigal (not kalaintha poigal) are some of the novels I enjoyed the most. But his best is 14 Naatkal. It can be easily listed in top 10 though I don't know in which position. Similarly Ponniyin Selvan can also be in the list and so is Yavana Rani. I was enjoying Balakumaran initially, but later started "hating" his novels. He is trying to justify his acts (second marriage etc) through his novels and also in the name of sentimets, he writes in a way (Yen kannamma, Yen Aatha and such a things) which in no way is acceptable for me. So though I rate Irumbu Kuthiraigal as a good novel, but due to his later novels, I understood his novels are stereo typed. Nobody mentioned MU.VA and his novels?
