The way it was expressed was different in other Bakthi Ilakkiyams. If Jayadeva's Ashtapahi [A well known bakthi poetry in Sanskrt] had depiction of love scenes, it was told in the form of a Love affair between the God and his consort. The philosophical [to the learned souls] part is expressed in a concealed form.
Similarly Alwars expressed their intimate affection to the God, through the Nayaki [Parankusa Nayaki & Parakala Nayaki] bhavam.
My humble opinion is, crude expression's cannot be admitted in literature. I can use Madras Thamizh and can write whatever comes to my mind. I may even find a section of a crowd finding the inner meaning (!) of my writings which will say that it is philosophy of the highest order - Life is like that - so admit my writings as philosophy but do not include the writings as the 13th Thirumarai.

This sort of opinion has arisen at various times regarding this issue.
If this yardstick is applied, then most hymns of AriNagirinaadhar's Thiruppugalzh will be affected.
But then, it was never considered as obsene.
Controversies have arisen for Pattinaththaar's hymns also.
If this situation is given deep thought, taking everything into consideration, the answer will flash into mind.
The reason?
Its quite simple, actually.
Why not cogitate over it?
