Supposing you feel that Tamil is truly a spoken
language - that is, you can regard it valuable
or worth for human existence please express it in
English. I feel honestly Tamil is only sound based
and it has no solid base as such.

Sorry, my post must have read:
So what is this thread all about anyway? As Manivannan pointed out, the originator of the thread makes use of obscure phrases like "a true spoken language", "worth for human existance" and "only sound-based". I think what he(Bhaskar) wishes to discuss, first of all, will become clear only if he(Bhaskar) explains it in understandable English. Could anyone make out what Bhaskar is trying to say? If so, please post the essence of his doubts/assertions in this thread, so I can get it too.

A graduate student of linguistics who wants to work on research problems in the area of deciphering 'kalvettu' etc has a meeting with his research advisor.
Student: Sir, please suggest me one good problem to work on, I will put all my efforts and make a mark in that field.
Prof: That is nice to hear, nowadays students ask me a problem that will lead to their doctorate quickly.
So looking at your diligence, I suggest, as a good preparation for the tough work ahead, to start deciphering what
Bhaskar V alias boscar means by his introductory message in a thread in forumhub's tlit section.

A year later
Student: Sir, I've at last deciphered the meaning of Bhaskar V's posting. I've written up a research article on that; please go through this draft before I send that for publication
Prof: Thats really a great piece of work, you have really solved a tough problem in record time, One comment I've on your paper is
about its title
" A sound Introduction to Language values of V Bhaskar". No scholarly publication would accept a facetious title with a pun on the word sound. Could you please change that to
"Deciphering Bhaskar's value system on Language and Sounds"
Student: Oh, definitely Sir. Would this fetch me my Ph.D.?
Prof: What do you mean? I am offering you a tenured position in our department

Tamil is a very remarkable original language of the world equal in greatness to Latin and Sanskrit. The greatness of tamil lies in the fact that while theother two great languages are dead , it survived mainly because, the spoken and written languages were almost similar. I remember an old story in which Kambar used the word Thumi for Thuli(i.e drop) and the knig was a great scholar objected to it because it was not in Nadaimurai. There is no need to translate anything in ones language to prove its superiority. Can any of the readrers suggest English word for ettanavadhu". Just because there is difficulty in finding a suitable word , English is not bad.One has to read Thirukkral alone and see that about 50-60% words are even now in the spoken tamil, showing the greatness of Tamil.

Many say "Tamil is a great language"
"No other sweet language than Tamil in the world"
etc.
In my opinion, the greatness of a language should
be defined in terms of its usefulness:
at home,
at the office,
in formal and informal conversation,
to expresss your feelings (love and hate) etc...
In reality...
we hear people use many many english words (or foreign words)
Also, many a time people use vulgar words to express their hatred feelings.
Isn't there any decent way to express hatred feelings or to deal with hot temperment?
Tamil Sweet Tamil!
thamizan enRu solladaa thalai nimirnthu nilladaa!
Can we?

Till today I have not got any satisfatory reply which can object my statement. It is found to be taken in different sense - I guess. The Tamil words do not penetrate into the mind of the latest generation where as English does. Why? The reason could be: We understand English through the operation of machines which obviously work like us. No such illustration has become possible since no Tamil machine is in existence. Therefore English has become a better choice to express ourselves than the original Tamil may be Englishman never likes the Engllish being so badly used and so do Tamilian. It is through the deep hurting feeling I got while trying to comprehend the lack of respect we pose to such a sweet language, I brought out this thread still I can bring out some better ways to say it!

Bhaskar, you are giving a reason whu English has become a bette choice to express ourselves than original Thamizh. Perhaps you are unaware of people here posting in Thamizh? please go to stories thread and see how beautifully people like Ragavan Gopalsamy and Chinnak KaNNan are expressing themselves in Thamizh? And read the postings by Harikrishnan, Venkat in places like veNpA veadikkalaam vaa, marabuppa etc.
And read Manivannan and Chandrasekaran's postings on topics such us culture etc.
Do you have problems in expressing yourself in Thamizh? That is not unusual. But the reasons for that may not be generalizable.
I've great difficulty understanding the basic tenets of Particle Physics. But I can't give the reasons for that as most people who developed Physics are from white race

Okay, I am somewhat like "Aththula oru kaal sEththula oru kAl" still, I can understand you. I have been reading Manivannan, Venkat, Harikrishnan etc. in our 'manRam'. Occasionally, I would post my reactions(sentimentally in different identity - honestly to play safe for myself). Never discriminate whites with us. We too were whites once upon a time - I feel - everything is a question of metabolism and theory of 'Eugenics'. Well, "MaNiyAchchi" Mr. VAnchinAthan! - I gotta go. I thank you very much for spending time with my small silly statements. Remember, I have absolutely no difficulty expressing myself - whole thing depends on other's perspective only. Tamil has been emerging too big - like Bhathra KaaLi - I am too weak to say any further on this!!

Bhaskar: Your words in the introduction to this thread " I feel honestly Tamil is only sound based
and it has no solid base as such. " (You said this in June 22, 2000)
And now you say, on 15th December 2000 "Tamil
has been emerging too big - like Bhathra KaaLi"
From this one may conclude that
1. You got your doubts clarified and agree to the view that Thamizh is one of the languages with the power to express complex things
Or
2. You still believe that Thamizh has no sold base, and yet agree that solid base is not required for a language "to emerge big like a Bhathra kALi"
3. or you have such a difficulty expressing yourself what you say sounds like contradiction.
This thread has been silent since July, you revive it with a post saying "no satisfactory reply to object your statement". And when I say something you immediately say you are "too weak to say any further" as if you had been involved in arguments
day after day draining your energy.
Nothing wrong in starting discussions on a topic one does not know much provided the intention is to learn and understand the topic.
But you started this threas to post your conclusions or honest opinions on Thamizh.
Some people responded.
But seeing nothing to substantiate that you arrived at that view with any knowledge of Thamizh or groundwork.
Success of democracy is that it gives power to express one's views whether one is qualified or not whether the views are arrived after a reasonable amount of study or not.

I don't understand the meaning of this topic itself! "Is Tamil True?" - ennaiyaa idhu? enakku kuzhambudhE?
Thamizh oru azhagaana, suvai migundha, sulabamaana mozhi. Idhula "sound-based", "valuable or worth for human existence"-nu laam pEsinaa enna artham? viLangalaiyE? sound illaadha language-um irukkaa ulagathula?
naagarigathin vaLarchiyaithaanE mozhi kurikkiradhu? In what way it is related to human existence? Have you forgotten that man existed even before any language was there in this world? Language is needed only for communication and not for survival.

Mr. Vaanchi. I say that - still - tamil makes less impact than what English could! Because probably it is not used as often as English or it has no solid base. I am very certain on this by looking at the current magazines - the way the appear!! Karthik is also sounding okay with me but YOU! Tamil is somewhat polished probably due to its lack of usage by scholars. Since I am terribly disturbed by its misconception, I am almost fed-up now. I say you also may be correct okay. NAMASKARAM.
