Dear Chandra:
Sorry to reply in english. Guess i need a tamil editor soon. Anyway the reason why there is a controversy is due to Sundara Ramaswamy. His "kattuRai" - 'Dalit Ilakkiyam PaTRi' has angered some Dalit writers. According to Sundara Ramaswamy Dalit writing is yet to come of age and that the current writing is not good hence the anger (while the anger is understandable accusations about him are not). But the whole controversy is based on flimsy reasoning. Sundara Ramaswamy has clearly stated that he has nothing to do with the whole project. See his rebuttal to A. Marx's criticism in Aaraamthinai. You see his son now runs "kalachuvadu"" which in turn is a "co-sponsor" of the event. Hence some people see a connection.
It is a shame that tamil writers' worst enemies are other writers themselves. Why dont these people who oppose the event wait till it is over and then complain if they see anything wrong? It is not correct to prejudge an event like this.
That Sundara Ramaswamy is from a brahmin family is given but it is also the truth that he has been a consistent progressive (although no longer marxist and that may also be a problem). Read his views on Eezham (essays like "thaazhinthu parakkum tamizh kodi" etc), religion etc, his essay collection is called "kaTRile vantha pErOsaigaL". I think some of these writers have to move away from "all persons born in brahmin families are same" attitude. And to call this event Paarpaniyam 2000 is a bit much especially when people like cheran, v.i.s jeyapalan are participating.
But somethings never change with tamil literateurs I guess. Sorry to bring in b vs nb stuff but unfortunately that does play a part.

Though many of the writers that belong to sundara ramasamy camp appear to have good command over the structure of their works, they lack originality. Their works are often inspired by the half baked understanding of the western literature especially french, german, and russian literature and philosophy.
Regarding the controversy, right from the days of Manikodi, the brahmin, non-brahmin controversy has been prevalent, but not very open. ALthough Sundara ramasamy camp may idolize puthumai pithan to project themselves as the succesors to him, there is a intellectual distance between puthumai pithan and these authors in terms of originality and depth. Despite appear-to-be- progressive stances taken by the Kalasuvadu camp, some of their rantings raise doubts about the whole objective behid the litereary movement led by kakasuvadu. Su.Ra will talk about marxism, but within the bounds of Indiayam. They will Talk about revoultion, but that would be led by pseudo-secular, pseudo-communist working class,not surprisingly, that is anti-tamil.of CPM and CPI working for public sectors.
