Mayb u misunderstood me.
I wasn't trying ot say I'm proud cuz I dunno the tamil word for gate. What I was trying to say is, that i'm not embarassed speak the truth. Listen darling I do speak tamil but i'm not a pro. No i don't have a gate at home but i do have a 'kathavu'.. How can u expect me to know gate in tamil, huh? Even people back home call GATE 'gate' not vayil or whatever..
Well sir u put the mundane in quote, so i thought maybe mundane is a tamil word. errrr smarty pants.

vanakkam
naan puthithaga kalakum siru tamil odai.
humbly reminding Miss Lanka that the equivalent of "gate" in tamil is "VaYil". in support of
madurai veeran, the words of kannalki are
"vAyielOnay, vAyielOnay,"
I think gate and door are different. in the same way(atleat), vayil and kathku are different

I am not a Tamil pro either but let's try...
vAyil means entrance. "Entrance" can be used in some cases..
in Jaffna we use padalai fro gate. It's often used for gates made out of palmera/coconut tree leaves (olai gate).
possible etymology --> ilai + padu or ilai + pada.
for how it's used you can read this short story (it's used once). the following link
http://www.sooriyan.com/stories/0002.asp
font: http://uthayan.com/bamini.zip
I think it should be used for iraon gates as well.
aran, sometimes what's appear to be mundane to us may not be so to others.
eg. most of the Eelam Tamils would know that the Tamil for passport is kadavuccIddu because our passport has that in big print in the front cover.
But most of the Tamils don't have a pass port or pass port with Tamil prints (in the case of our descendants).
I understand your point of view. Still it's better to patient & give them the benefit of the doubt. (We shouldn't shun Tamil learners/ interested.

Subramanium,
>>>good morning in Tamil is "kAlai vaNakkam"
I disagree with this. This is what I call cloning. It's absurd to add the "kAlai" when your using that to some one in the morning. They know it's moring. So just vanakkam suffices.

Hi! I'm a Tamilian from Bangalore. But my spoken Tamil isn't too good, I'm sorry to say. I'd like to know what the various Tamil words for 'honey' are(as in honey made by honeybees, NOT the other honey!). As far as I know, honey is called 'thane'. I read somewhere that it is also called 'jane' and 'madhuras'. Please enlighten me.

Hello Srini,
Thanks for the response. Is it a sanskrit word? Because in Tamil Ninai means Think right. May be both(yosi and ninai) means Think. Is that exact word? Somebody told me Contemplate.
