The cave which the SwamigaL was usind=g as his residence was at first small. It would allow only one person to crawl in, lying down.
The SwmigaL with the help of his disciples, excavated the soil and eart little by little until the cave spacious enough to accommodate about a hundred persons at any one time.

While they were removing the earth, they saw the skeletons of three persons seated in the Lotus Posture - Padmasanam.
They were carefully taken without missing anything and kept in a pot and the pot was buried in the earth outside. Th SwamigaL planted a Ficus Religiosa Tree(Arasa Maram), Bael Tree(Vilva Maram), and a Neem Tree(VEppa Maram) upon it and did the pradhistai and made them into Jiiva Samaadhis.
Who were these great Yogis?
When did they sit in the Lotus Posture for Nishtai?
It should be noted that it was in this same cave that the SwamigaL's body was set in Samaadhi.

The SwamigaL developed Siddhic powers.
He has shown that he can be in two different places at he same time.
Once, a black magician came to VaLLimalai while the SwamigaL was performing the Girivalam with his disciples. He used his powers to prevent the disciples of the SwamigaL from singing Thiruppugalz. But the SwamigaL broke the spell by his mere look.
Then the magician performed the Narasimhaasanam and tried to harm them.
The SwamigaL knew that Narasimham could be overwhelmed by the Sarabam only. He also knew that the Thiruppugalz song dedicated to ThiruKaaLaththi contained passages which mention the powers of the Sarabam. So he sang the song. Again the spell of the magician was broken.
Then the magician used the Jeshta Devi aasanam but found that all his aasanas and manthras were all broken and overcome by the power of Thiruppugalz which could burn even fire itself.
So the magician left VaLLimalai immediately.
Many miracles happened which proved the powers of Thiruppugalz

In the year 1917, the Swamiji told his disciples that he was going to perform nishtai and ordered them o close the opening of the cave with a big rock.
They did so.
But other disciples were afraid that something untoward might happen and they opened the cave.
After all this commotion, the Swamiji opened his eyes and said 'Thandapaani'. He scolded his disciples for having disturbed his nishtai.

There was one occasion, when Murugan came to listen to the SwamigaL while he was singing Thiruppugalz in a thinnai of one of the houses in ThiruththaNi.
He was in the form of a Brahmin elder.
And he danced at times when the SwamigaL was singing.
At tha time, there was a brilliant light which shone at the top of the ThiruththaNi Hill.

There is a line in Thiruppugalz, 'Thiruppugalz Odhu karuththinar sErum ThiruththaNi mEvum PerumaLE'.
So he started the ThiruththaaNi Thiruppadi ThiruVilza.
It was customary for people to go and pay courtesy calls and pay homage to the British rulers and officials on the first of January of every year.
The Swamiji was chagrined that mere mortals - and that too alien mortels should receive homages on such an auspicious occassion.
So he began a pilgrimage in ThiruththaNi which would commence in the evening of 31st of December.
They would sing one Thiruppugalz song for each of the steps which led up to the temple at the top of the hill. At the completion of the song, Dhiipa Aaraadhanai would be performed and they would go to the next step. Again they would sing another song and do the Aaraadhanai.
At the stroke of mid-night and the beginning of the New Year, the SwamigaL and entourage would be at the sannidhi of Murugan and they would perform special worships with abhishekam, etc.
This was repeated every year and is still going on.
The festival also takes place in other places like Viraali Malai, etc., as well.

What started on a modest scale at ThiruththaNi with just six bhakthas, in 1917, took immense dimensions.
The crowd of Bhakthas who flock to ThiruththaNi on the 31st of December was so huge that a special train was put into service solely for that purpose.
The Golden Jubilee for this festival was celebrated in 1968/1969.
A mani mantapam was erected to commemorate the occassion.
Many publications of souvenirs with Thiruppugalz and associated topics, too place very often.
Very soon the festival was started at places like ThiruvaNNaamalai, VaLLi Malai, Mayilam, Silingagiri, ThiruNiirmalai, ThiruchchiraappaLLi Malai, Suvaami Malai, Virali Malai, PerumpERu Malai, etc.
The festival in each place was celebrated on a different days. ThiruvaNNaamalai - Aug 15th; VaLLiMalai - Apri 14th; Mayilam - 26th Jan., etc.

That's a very good question.
I might as well answer it here and now.

It is not known who the yogis/siddhars/rishis were.
Nishtai is a complex process.
Basically, it would mean meditation and samaadhi.
But that would be too simplistic.
It is more than what is captured in that definition.
In order to explain it, we have to have some background knowledge about the process.
Let us see briefly what it is all about.
