I had the pleasure of attending the first kamban vizha in US. This was organized by bay area
thamizh mandram today.
It started off with a few kids singing "neeraadum kadaluduththa" in a mediocre manner.
Then, Prof. Ilango talked in detail about the various aspects of kamba ramayanam. It was an
enlightening talk with lots of examples. It was exciting to listen to kamban's kavi nayam
and rich expressions.
The piece that stood out in the whole programme was the vazhakkaadu mandram and the
kalandhuraiyaadal following it. Mani M. Manivannan and Prabhakaran argued on whether Ramar
was right in testing seethai's purity. Both sides made good points in this shortened piece.
Was Ramar right in asking seethai to jump into a fire? Was he a male chauvinist? Should we
consider Ramar to be a character in a story and look at it from a literary point of view
or should we consider from religious and philosophical points of view? Finally, are we right
in criticizing an action in an earlier society from our societal values? Are our current
ethical considerations a good standard to judge old legends? I felt that a couple of other
lacklustre programs should have been discarded and this should have been given more
prominence. The kalandhuraiyaadal was also interesting.
A malar was given with the show, having an interesting essay by Harikrishnan (Is it available
online? If not, Hari, Can you post it here?). Also had a samosa and I got to meet Manivannan.
On the whole, this was a great effort and I hope there are more such literary events in the
future. A couple of suggestions: There was no proper introduction to Kamba ramayanam,
information about Kambar and about good thamizh books to learn kamban. The speeches were
prepared (sometimes read) and to fully appreciate the poetry, slides could have been used.
This way we could have read and listened to the presentation as well. We couldn't get the full
import of the lines described and a powerpoint presentation is always a good add-on.
The housekeeping was also lacking. People in the audience were talking all the time (eppadidee
irukkE, innikku macy's sale pOttirukkaan etc), with noisy kids and ringing cellphones. This was
a big deterrant to a good quality program.
A couple of snippets:
Apparently, Mu.Va stated that the practice of worshipping Ramar came only
after Kamban, and valmiki did not consider Raman as god.
Kamban incorporated naattupurap paadal (ulakkai paattu) format in one of his poems (the one
where Kumbakarnan wakes up).
And finally, software engineers who have an interest in literature are "kaNingars":)

Balaji,
Thanks for uploading the files. The PostScript file looks better than the PDF file because it does not have the e problem. If you want to read the postscript file, you need to download GhostScript and GSView programs. They are both available in the public domain.
As for other TSCII fonts in the PDF file, I could not make it do so. The PDF file hardcodes the font name but somehow refuses to embed the ComicTSC font. ComicTSC font was the only TSCII font that I was able to successfully convert to PDF format. Other fonts either could not be converted or scrambled the PDF file badly.
ComicTSC is also available at other sites. I downloaded my copy from the http://www.tamil.net/tscii/tools.html site and it works for me. But others have complained that it did not. I will keep trying to embed the font in the PDF file to prevent this problem and upload a revised version by this weekend.
In the meanwhile I can send my copy of ComicTSC to Balaji so that he can host it at the ForumHub site.

Mani,
I guess you used Acrobat 4.x for creating the pdf file. 4.x is fuzzy about the font copyrights. When the maker is not specifying explicitly that the font is free for distribution, 4.x takes a conservative step and considers it as protected and refuses to embed the font. This is problem with aparanar, comic, timestamil tsc - the best of the tscii fonts. Though I strongly feel our friends who created these fonts wanted it to be freely distributed (when the font itself is available for free download, there is no need to forbid it from embedding. Taking this stand, I will soon release a fully free versions of these, which will make them embedable.
For the time being try a lesser version of acrobat, if you have access to (say 3.x) - which will prevent embeding only if explicitly flagged so.
What program did you use originally to create the files?

i ran ps2html program on kamban.ps, and went for dinner. when i came back, i saw that it was still running and the html file size was about 23 GB:)
is there a good ps to html converter around?

Venkat,
You are correct. I did use Acrobat 4.0 and it refused to embed the TSCII fonts. I could not move them from the "Never Embed" list to "Always Embed" list.
Hari and Kannan are able to read it. So, it is possible to read the PDF. You may need Acrobat reader 4.0 or later to read it. BB, do you want me to send you my copy of the ComicTSC font?

Sorry, your html version is very bad ( there are spaces where there should not be one). ps2html is an aweful program.
Mani: If you send me the original file, I will use acorbat 3.x and prepare a decent version of it (see for e.g.
http://www.tamil.net/projectmadurai/pub/pm0091/panchali.pdf ).
Recently, thuraiappah vaseegaran has developed a tamil version of LaTeX (which I failed), this when used with PDFLaTeX produces excellent acrobat files (open source solution!!). Currently this works only with linux (or any xwin) I am trying to tweak it to use with MikTeX, the windows, which can solve electronic publishing problems in tamil.

TamiLaTeX?
That is a blast from the past alright!
May be we should hunt down Bala Swaminathan's
lisp code that used ASCII glyphs to
represent tamil characters in standard distribution of Emacs!!!! You set an extremely
small font size, like 2pt font, and suddenly you
are editing in tamil in Emacs, baby!!!
BB, scan 'em, up load 'em. 72 dpi scan to jpg produces reasonable file sizes and readable text.
BTW almost all the laser printers are post-script compatible. I'll report how well they print soon.
