naren, the fifth volume is coming out in serial form in www.kalkiweekly.com right now. Read it every week. I'll try to find the address of the publishers. Send an ordinary cheque and ask them to send the books by mail to one of your relatives in India. Now a days we can always find a friend to carry a book from India to US/UK very easily.
I believe one of the best thamizh thondu a relatively affluent Tamil settled in the west can do is to support the struggling publishers in TN.

I agree with Ravi wholeheartedly.
Vanathi publishes Kalki's books.
See:
http://www.intamm.com/nool/vanathi/
The address is given there. ( There was another
publisher who had a fancier publication of PS with nice pictures etc. I don't temember the name, however. )

Senorita,
I too am a fan of Maniam. Other talented artists have also produced line and wash drawings for Ponniyin Selvan. But who can forget Maniam's 'Pazhuvettaraiyar', 'Poonkuzhali', 'Nandini' and last but not the least, 'Azhvarkkadiyan'? ;-)

1) When Ponniyin Selvan was first published in Kalki (1950s), it was with Maniyam's drawings.
2) When P.S was re-serialised during late 60s, Vinu was the artist.
3) The second re-serialisation (1985?) retained the original page layout and the drawings by Maniam.
4) The third re-publishing (now) has drawings by Padmavasan.

GD, what happened to the other threads in PS?
Anyway in the epilogue, kalki says the assasination of AK was not investigated at that time to protect Nandini. Later after Uththama ChOzan's reign, when AMV ascended to the throne, he confiscated the properties of Ravi Dhasan.
I am not really satisfied. Nandini is a fictional character wholly made up by kalki. So if there was a delay in the punishment of the assasins of AK, and they went unpunished all through the reign of Uththama Chozan, may be he was behind it after all.
My theory: Madhuranthakan, who believed he had a claim to the throne, got AK assassinated with the help of his in-laws. At that time the loyalties of the Generals was probably evenly divided and he ascended to the throne as Uththama Chozan. But AMV strategically married the daughters and sisters of all the generals and became strong enough to thwart all efforts by Uththama Chozan Madhuranthankan to install his sons as heirs. This would explain why the assassins were not punished in his reign, but AMV punished them after the demise of UCM.

Conspiracy theory 2: AMV had his brother assassinated (kalki writes that the sambuvaraiyar start this rumor to avoid blame falling on them). This was suspected making it difficult for AMV to ascend the throne immediately. M had grown up by then and was crowned instead. Things were pretty difficult with machinations by both groups 'til M died suddenly a few/12? years later (possibly murdered, but made to appear like it was not). By then, AMV formed alliances with the various chieftains and gained the throne. For form's sake, he punished a few people for his brother's murder and let others off lightly.

15 years, according to kalki. kik, I dont think it would be AMV, but to support your theory, the assassins were not punished heavily. They were not put to death.
He also mentions that Vanthiya Thevan is specifically mentioned as the husband of K in the thanjai periya koyil stone inscriptions. I did not know that. I was under the impression, VT is a fictional character.

I guess I must be a real "oldie" compared to most of the other readers. I read PS when I was in my early teens in the 1960s. I must have read this story atleast about twenty times since then. I now realise that I am not the only one captivated by Kalkis great writing style. As far as I am concerned PS is one of the greatest literary masterpieces

I'm interested in reading the English transalation of "PN"..... but amazon.com lists "Ponniyin Selvan- First floods" (paperback for volumes 1 and 2 out of 5 total volumes) priced at $22.50... which is a bit steep for me. I would be interested in buying an used book.... if anyone can spare one... please mail me at my hotmail account with the name siddarthm as the id.
Thanks

Dear friends,
I just completed 'Ponniyin selvan'. Great writing.
I'm not clear about who killed Adhitha karikalan. Can somebody clarify my doubt?
Gokul.

Kalki mixes fact and fiction so thoroughly one needs frequently gets confused. So it is always better to ask either
Who really killed AK? or
Who killed AK according to Kalki?
to avoid confusion.
FActs:
Assassins of AK were not punished during the regime of Uththama Chozan. Following him was AMV who ascended to the throne as RajaRajan. He punished a few people and according to the copper plates and stone inscriptions, he did not put them to death. He just exiled them and confiscated their property. That has lead to the many speculations you see in this thread.
According to Kalki: In PS Periya Pazuvettaraiyar confesses to killing AK but kalki darkly hints that might not be the whole truth. In his epilogue he says, after AMV conquers Amarabujangan Nedunchezian, (the fictional fake Mathuranthakan, in PS, how weird! fictional fake ?!? ;-)) Nandini tells the truth to AMV in her death bed. Kalki goes further and says the assassins were spared for so long because the ruling clan wanted to protect Nandini. But Nandini, fake Mathuranthankan brought up by Chembian Maadevi, everything is pure fiction. I have only academic interest in what she would have said, had kalki lived to write that part of the story.
Other theories: GDravid speculates may be they escaped death penalty because they were brahmins.
I think it could be Uththama Chozan who was behind the assassins.
It is also possible AMV himeself was behind the assassins and they were given an "eye wash" of a punishment.
One suggested Kundhavai as the conspirator-in-chief, mainly on the evidence that she never went to her husband's place, she remained in uRaiyur and thanjaavur plotting palace intrigues all her life. She even convinced RajaRajan to name his daughter Kundhavai.
I, natuarally, vote for my theory, though I realize there is nothing special about mine :-).
