Near to Kanchipuram, is a hill called Lavalii or VaLLi Malai.
A chieftain of hunters was living there with his family and tribe.
At one time, Vishnu had taken the form of a Siva Munivar and was doing tapas in that hill. With his look he caused a doe to give birth to a beautiful baby. This baby was an incarnation of one of his two daughters from Vishnu Lokam, who had done tapas to marry Murugan. The daughter was born as DEvasEna.
The baby was found by the hunter cheiftain who gladly adopted her as his own daughter. She was named VaLLi.
When she was twelve years old, she was sent to guard the thinai millet fields from the birds. It was the custom of the tribe.
The sage Naaradha saw her and knew that the time had come for her to marry Murugan. But this was not going to be straight-forward marriage. It had to be done in the mode of 'kaLaviyal', the ancient form of marriage which is one of the approved forms of marriages by the ancient Tamils.
He promptly told Murugan.
Murugan came to her in the form of a hunter and tried to woo her.
At that time, the chieftain came along. Immediately Murugan took the form of a vEnggai tree. When the chieftain had departed, Murugan switched back to the hunter-form and tried to woo her again. But His overtures were turned down by VaLLi.
After that, Murugan came to her as an old man who was on a pilgrimage. He stayed as the guest of the hunter chieftain for some time. VaLLi was assigned to look after him and his needs.
Murugan was fed Thinai flour mixed with honey. During the course of the meal, Murugan developed hiccoughs. VaLLi led him to a nearby pond for a drink of water. Murugan pretended to slip and fall into the water. He was saved by VaLLi. Murugan started playing pranks with her and told her about his love. But he was still refused.
Thereupon, Murugan prayed to His elder brother, Vinaayakar. He appeared in the form of an elephant. VaLLi had always had a mortal dread for elephants. She could not even bear to hear the name of the elephant which would terrify her.
So when Vinaayakar appeared as an elephant, He started chasing VaLLi. She asked Murugan to save her from the dreadful elephant. Murugan asked her marry him in return, if he were to save her. She would not. So the elephant chased her again. This went on until until she promised to marry Murugan. The elephant lifted her up and tossed her into the upheld arms of Murugan.
Murugan prayed to His brother and Vinaayakar went back.
Murugan showed His true form to VaLLi,. He also told her that she was indeed the daughter of His uncle Vishnu and that she had earlier performed intense tapas to marry Murugan.
He disappeared and came back as the young hunter again. They spent a long time in love among the caves and other places of VaLLi Malai.
Finally, Murugan was advised by VaLLi's maid to take her away to some other place.

After night-fall, the maid led VaLLi stealthily to Murugan and Murugan took her away to the hill.
In the morning, the hunters and their chieftain came in search.
There was a fight and the hunters lost their lives.
Naaradha appeared and asked Murugan to raise the hunters back to life.
Murugan asked VaLLi to look upon her father and bretheren. She did so and her look revived them.

VaLLi ThirumaNam
**************
The hunters worshipped Murugan and asked him to marry her according to their rites.
They went back to the hunters' place and Murugan sat on a tiger skin.
VaLLi took her divine form.
Parvathi and Siva appeared for the marriage.
The hunter chieftain poured out water and gave VaLLi as Kanyaadhaanam in marriage to Murugan.
Murugan and VaLLi worshipped Siva and Parvathi.
All the celestial beings showered flowers upon the Divine Couple.
Murugan took VaLLi to Sri ParipuurNa Giri and sat upon a throne with VaLLi in a palace there. This place is known as ThiruThaNi Malai. Murugan told her about the special qualities of that place.
Then Murugan established a Siva Linggam there and performed Siva Puujai.

After that, Murugan went to Kandha Giri where VaLLi was cordially welcomed and received as a companion by DEvasEna.
Murugan sat upon a throne with VaLLi and DEvasEna on both sides. Murugan then told DEvasEna about their both their histories.
DEvasEna expressed great happiness at having been reunited with her sister VaLLi. VaLLi asked her elder sister to look after her.
Both of them sat with Murugan in perfect concordance.
Murugan's chariot, peacock, cockeral, ram, VElaayutham, and the vimaana came to them.
Thus Murugan sat on His splendid throne with both His wives, receiving all the respects of the warriors, army commanders, and bhuthas who surrounded Him.
Thus Suutha Munivar recited the story of Sri Muruga Perumaan to all the rishis who sat around him in Naimisaaranya Forest.

Kadambanai idumbanai alzhiththa iniyavEl Muruga - Murugan who bears the good vEl and who destroyed Kadamban and Idumban -
The Idumban story is connected with Palzani Malai and the practice of carrying the Kaavadi for Murugan as a unique and special form of worship for Murugan.
Let us see what it is about....

The sage Agasthiyar had a disciple called Idumban.
Agasthiyar asked Idumban to go the Himalayas and bring two hills called the Sakthi Giri and Siva Giri to Tamilnaadu. Agasthiyar wanted these hills for meditation and tapas.
Idumban went accordingly to the Himalayas and took the two hills. He tied them in slings which he hung from the two ends of a gigantic pole which he carried over his shoulder.
This is a 'kaavadi'.
The mechanism of kaavadi is such that the weights at both ends are balanced with each other.
While walking, the weights jostle up and down. They also swing forwards and backwards and also sideways.
This sort of movement makes carrying easier.
The carrier walks with a rhythmic gait which synchronises with the jostling movement of the weights at both ends.
This makes travel a lot easier. The carrier can walk fast for a long distance, without getting tired.
The poles with the slinged weights is called the 'kaavu thadi'.
This has come to be called 'kaavadi'.
During the journey of Idumban, he came to a certain place. Suddenly he got very thirsty and put down the kaavadi and went in search of a drink.
After he had quenched his thirst, he tried to pick up the kaavadi. But found that the hills would not move. He inspected and found that there was a small boy who was standing at the top of one of the hills. Idumban could not lift the hill with the small boy on it.
He tried to chase the boy away. But the boy would not go. Idumban tried to fight with him but only got killed by the boy.
Idumbi came and cried and beseeched the boy who was Murugan, to give life to her husband.
So Murugan showed mercy and raised up Idumban. Idumban became an ardent devotee of Murugan.
Murugan stayed in one of the hills and it came to be one of the 'Padai Viidu's of Murugan. It became named as Palzani and Thiru Aavinan Kudi. Murugan stands there in form of an ascetic. Murugan as the PalzaniyaaNdavar, receives special types of worship in Palzani. The Siddhar BOgar made a statue of 'Nava Paashaanam' for Murugan and established it there. BOgar subsequently attained samaadhi in Palzani.
In Palzani, the pancaamirtham is offered as the abhishEkam together with other normal abhishEkams like milk, honey, vibhuuthi, and rose water. A special type of vibhuuthi called the javaadhu vibhuuthi is used for the abhishEkam. The abhishEkam ingredients possess medicinal qualities because they were used to bathe the statue made of navapaashaanam.
The Silver ratham chariot is drawn during the festivals.
Idumban became a guard for Murugan.
Kaavadi carrying became an important form of a specicial worship which is specific for Murugan.
It has become the custom to perform the 'Idumban Puujai' after the carrying of Kaavadi for Murugan. It is a part of the whole worship.
Let us see some more about Kaavadi.....

There are many types of kaavadis. The commonest and the earliest was the type that Idumban carried. That was the original type. Two sembu pots of milk were carried and this was offered to Murugan as abishishegam. If a person were to carry the kaavadi for a long distance, it was some thiirththam which was used for abhishekam for Murugan.
Later on there have been other types like paal kaavadi, panniir kaavadi, pushpa kaavadi, alahu kaavaadi, paraavik kaavadi, thEr kaavadi, machchak kaavaadi, etc.
The carrying of kaavadi is accompanied by music and beating of drums.
A special form of songs called 'kaavadi chindhu' came into being during the 19th century.
It started this way......
