pria i am also a fan of ponniyin selvan...one interesting thing one of my friends told is that out of the two masterpieces, sivakamiyin sabatham and p.i.s,,the first book one reads will continue to captivate one's mind for ever.
I read first P.I.S...so even till date i am captivated...infact many times i visualise myself to be vandiyadevan....one of my friends kumar has even taken vanthiyadevan as his id and comes to yahoo tamil chat rooms.
Ofcourse of all the females depicted i like Nandini....one of my friends fell in love with her(seeing maniyam's drawings!!!).
I read that maniyam and kalki used to go to the exact locations to write and draw.I went to kodiyakarai some five years back for a picnic with friends and found that the Alagar temple is still like the one portrayed by kalki..alagar is still alone.

Hi Priya,
I am also one of the greatest fans of Ponniyin Selvan. I read it when I was in my 8th standard and I have read it 5 times(now I am in college). Sometimes I think I am born in this world just to read this book. Well among all the characters I love Vandiyathevan. If I have powers I will go back to past and marry Vandiyathevan. Then I like Poongulazhi also. Hope u will send me a reply. I like to say hai to all the fans of Ponniyin Selvan.
with love,
charanya
well I am in a village called Ambasamudram(near Tirunelveli) and my cousin used to call me as amba'samudrakumari'.

Recently "Vardhamanan Pathippagam" based in Chennai had low-priced issue of PS on sale. I bought all four (PS, SS, Alai Oasai, Parthibhan Kanavu) together for as little as Rs. 350 including S&H. Check it out. NOTE: It's a no-frills low priced edition - with no paintings. Hence it's not for those fans of Maniyam.
They also have a lot of other (G)oldies. Mahabharatham, Bhaghavatham are two of those which I bought.
I am not surprised that so many being obsessed with PS, for I am one myself. In fact, my mom used to tell me that I started liking "Idiyappam" after I read that Vanthiyathevan had a bunch of those @ Chenthan Amuthan's home :-)... I would definitely recommend PKanavu also to you, you'll just love it.
Btw, it was Kuzhakeer/Kuzhakar's temple at Kodiyakkari...
Nice reading the thread.

Happy to find lot of PS fans.. Tha amazing research that Kalki had put behind the novel and the enterprising way in which he takes us through the exciting story is the secret behind the success of the novel. When I joined my first job and got my first salary, the first book I bought was PS..

hi friends,
i am an ardent fan of ponniyin selvan, read it the first time when i was in 7th or 8th standard. currently reading it for the nth time. almost all the places that kalki mentions in his novel still exist today, in fact Konerirajapuram (Thirunellam in the novel) is the birth place of my grandmother.
so how would it be if there was some tour which took people to all these places.
people fascinated with Jane Austen's novels (like Pride and Prejudice) go on such tours (to Pemberly and such).
just a thought. what do u folks think??

Indu: Last Jan (01) some retired archaeology prof conducted a chola heritage tour (not PS specific - very similar) to visit the temples and explain the architectural/sculptural features. There was an ad in the Indian Review of Books. I regret not going because the dates didn't fit my vacation schedule.
Other interesting ideas that are being tried out are a village style resort near Trichy mainly for foreigners to get a feel for village life. Of course there's also dakshina chitra & chola mandal.

Not surprising to see lots of fans for ponniyin selvan. And everyone seems to have started it around the 8th std mark!!! . I read it every year somehow and since i am not in india i am badly missing it.
But hey I dont like the idea of cinematizing PS. Never ;-) They can never find suitable girls for "pazhuvoor ilaya raani" and "Ilaya pratti". I cannot digest either mumbai heroines or the TV serial queens parading as maniam selvans damsels. :-(
Kamal haasan as the versatile vandhiya thevan seems Ok. Still .....
Let the legend be left alone...

hi,
SERIOUSLY Great to know and read bout this page which lets us share our thoughts.
I read the book when i was in 10th class (now i am 30 years!!!) (long time fantasy eh?:))
and i used to fantasise being kundavai or Nandini :-))
Some how i liked Nandini's character a lot...though some of us trade mark it as negative character...i personally feel We all have such kind of emotions and feelings deep burried in us...and any character is justifiable because of the situation and circumstances by which he or she has become what they are now!
In case some of u all are interested in English literature ..then you would have come across so many negative chracters, in many novels, justifiably sad..that by the end of the novel that we feel pathetic for them.
Nandini is very brave, and a combination of beauty and brains
just enough to have POWER in her hand....
makes u think
WOW WHAT A WOMAN!
Kalki's works are great...and PONNIYIN SELVAN
is the crown of all!

Hi all,
ITS just great to tumble across this site..
I am one of the kalki's fan and PONNIYIN SELVAN IS MY FAVOURITE!
I read the book when i was in 10th class (now i am 30 years !!!) and used to fantisise about being
Kundavai or Nandini.....(loong time fantasy eh?:-))
NANDINI'S character had deep impact in me.
In case any of u all are fond of english novels
and literature we would have come acrosss so many
novels which justifies the negative chracters, for their behaviours and reasons..
I believe all of us have negative and positive
burried inside us..and what is negative is basically a relative concept.
Nandini had beauty and brains....great enough to
win power in her hand...
it makes me think
WOW WHAT A WOMAN!!!!
Kalki's works are treasures and PONNIYIN SELVAN is
a crown amongst all!
warm regards,

Hi Friends,
Iam amazed to see such a fan club of p.s.
(me too!!!).Well the novel deserves it.
Recently i saw an AD in suntv requiring artistes for P.S.Would it be possible to visualise the novel ????.I dont think that they can keep up the spirit of the novel.
Has anybody visited the site WWW.THANJAVUR.COM.If so, please mail me about the details of the statue of RAJARAJACHOLAN(p.s)given in that site.
ALL THE BEST
