Venkatesan,
Parse it very carefully. Pazuvettarayar confesses to killing AK. But Kalki very cleverly mentions it in as a statement by Pazuvettaraiyar. Never has kalki as the narrator confirmed it nor have any other characters corroborated it. I think Kalki was setting up a new twist.
The way PP character was set up, it would be impossible for PP to kill AK and live on. The way his character was built up, if his dagger misses nandini and kills AK, he would have killed Nandini with another weapon and committed suicide immediately. He would not have allowed VT to bear the blame. Not after seeing the true face of Nandini. No, he took the blame as a repayment of his ill treatment of VT earlier. That is what VT himself speculates.
Very clearly Kalki says in his epilogue, "nandini tells the truth to AMV at her death bed 15 years later after AMV kills Amarabujangan Nedunchezhian."

ravi: since i've just finished the PS serial in kalki it's fresh in my mind - PP actually confesses on his deathbed that his dagger/sword missed AK & Nandhini. He says he took the blame to spare VT because he knew K was in love with VT. Had he listened to K's advice none of this would have happened. K, Sundara chozhar are all hiding in the room listening to this confession made to azhvaarkadiyaan/anirudhar.

I also agree with ravi sundaram that Periya Pazuvettaraiyar would not have killed AK. I read somewhere that Ravidasan, Pandiyan's 'aabaththudhavi' has killed AK. But kalki did not want to tell this fact, because he was a brahmin. Could that be true?
Gokul.

I agree with kik, PP did not kill AK, his confession is to protect VT. I too recently read PS for the 1st time and was taken by it. Excellent piece of literary work. Never enjoyed anything so much in my life before.

Nice to read about PS and all the conspiracy theories...
1. Can the forumhubbers say who is their favourite character in PS and why?
2. At what point do AVM and the King know about Kundavai-VT romance?

The king most likely found out from periya PV on his deathbed if not from aniruddhar. AVM probably guessed from their reactions when the three of them were together - K repeatedly says that AVM learned kaLLaththanam/poi pesuthal etc. from VT.

My favorite character was vandiya thevan, simply becos most of the story unravelles through him. He's a 'cool dude', he keeps his cool no matter what danger he gets into. Also he seems very human showing fear, love, etc. Instead of being sterotyped as a soldier (veeran) who is fearless, his character is more developed. I don't know if all this makes sense to y'll, I was really take by him. He sounds like an extroverted, bubbly character who is not invincible but is like any other regular guy.

I am not sure if you guys have discussed a hypothetical question "which of the present day actors would you want to act out ponniyin selvan's characters"?
My picks...
Vandiyathevan: Karthik minus his accent. He'll fit in the bubbly, savvy and at times stupid vandiyathevan.
AMV: MGR might have suited him the best, but i guess i ve to go for Kamal..minus 15yrs or more so Aamir khan...for this dignified, composed, valorous, romantic hero.
Aditya karikalan: sarat kumar? ...he can do a sivaji can't he?
Kundavi: mmmm...it could easily have been K R vijaya.. but ...now Roja? esp after "unnidathil ennai kuduthen".. for a dignified, composed, intelligent looks
Nandini: needs a lot of histrionics...challenging role..somebody who can show emotions in a flash, tempermental moods...madhuri dixit?
Vanathi: who else but Devayani.
P Pazhuvettarayar: Dignity and vulnerability, shame, sacrifice...challenging role...Mammooty?
C Pazhuvettarayar: napoleon
Sendan amudan: soorya
Madhuranthakan: challenging role...villanous, but got to be mild mannered..Abbas?
Poonguzhali: tuf role: somebody who has to show spontaneity, earthiness, love, hatred, joy sorrow, all at once....kajol?
Well the list could go on... but let me stop here and invite your comments....

Were you all satisfied with the conclusion. I was really disappointed not to know who killed AK. Thankfully in the edition I was reading Kalki gives information as to what happened to the rest of the characters. But I feel the story lacks closure.
Also, I feel the relationship between Punghuzali and AMV is also confusing. At one point it looks asif both of them like each other, in fact some places it looks like PZI adores AMV and suddenly everthing changes towards the end. AMV is very casual towards her, and PZI too shows hatred. Or am I reading too much in between lines?

There's no hatred - PZI changes her mind about sendhan amudhan & AMV about V. Some of this happens offstage so we don't get to see it. It's possible that Kalki was playing this by ear, since he had a weekly deadline to deliver the next instalment.
As to closure, agree completely. But, if he didn't leave it here, there is no other logical ending point. The punishment for the AK kolai doesn't happen for another 12/15 years. VT & K don't get married for a while, so where else could this end?

On PZI vs AVM: AVM asks Vanthiya Thevan - if PZI really married Senthan Amuthan out of her own volition? A case of some pangs too late?

Hi Folks,
I have been a silent lurker on this site for quite some time. I have learnt a lot from a lot of very learned people here. Occasionally I have been quite disgusted with all the "casteist" wars going on. Anyhoo, my post is not about that.
I am a tamilian who grew up in the Eastern and Northern parts of India. Although we spoke tamil at home, I never learnt to read and write tamizh. However, once I moved to Tamizh Nadu, my interest in my mother tongue slowly developed. I taught myself how to read tamizh "Yezhutthu Kootti". Then I decided one day that it was rather shameful that I didn't know enough about my language. Purely, to improve my tamizh speed, I started off with Ponniyin Selvan. (I had heard a lot about it of course and Raja Raja Chola was a particular favourite cos we hail from Thanjavur and for some reason or the other, standing in front of the Periya Kovil always gave me goose bumps... the call of the land perhaps?? I have never had that happen to me anywhere else in the world).
ANyway, the going was tough initially, but soon I got caught up in the story.. the characters... and then as my reading speed improved.. i got fully immersed in it. It took me a while, but I managed to finish it a couple of days ago. I must say it is probably one of the best books I have ever read. Amazing writing.. beautifully characterization.
Lets me appreciate the beauty of my mothertongue even more.

Dear Ponniyin selvan fans,
I am 38 years old and live in US for the past 10 years. I read PS when I was 15 years in 10th Std. After that I might have read it again 5 or 6 times. It is always fresh every time and refreshing and go I in to some kind of a dream mode visualizing those Characters when I read and amazed at Amarar Kalki's imagination.
Well. these are my conclusion about who killed AK.
According to Kalki, there is a gap in the Historical evidence for 2 or 3 years in the Thanjavur Dynasty during our Story period and the "Seppadukal" do not talk about Karikalans death. With no historical evidence, Kalki does not want to say for sure this is what happend to AK in the story. That is why he cleverly giving the views of the characters and leave us to imagine what would have happened to AK. He talks about this historical information in the next chapter after AK found dead If I remember correct it is after the "Irul Sulnthathu" chapter.
As for Poonguzhli's contradiction ,she wanted to be a queen at some point of time. But she knows
K wont let her marry AMV and Vanathi likes AVM. But she gets a change of heart after her aunt's death saving Paranthaga Chola and wanted to lead a peacefull life at Kodikkarai with Senthan Amuthan away from Politics. Rest you know.
If some body wanted to sell me the weekly bounded version of PS with Vinu drawings I will be more than happy to buy them. I have a printed copy of PS but the Vinu drawings are amazing.
When I visited India last summer I took time to visit Thanjavur Temple and Kangai Konda Cholpuram temple. Also I was looking at old book shops for the PS with Vinu drawings.
May be some one start a thread with which drawings where better.

dear PS fans
everyone has spoken a lot about the dynamic characters in PS, but failed to mention bout Manimegalai. she was one who always remained torn between the love for her brother and VT. she is portrayed as a brave woman who is caring and clever, confused by unexplained things about Nandini, AK and VT. in spite of this her luv for VT never wavers finally leading her to unsteadiness of mind.
and there is that deduction by K that Nandini actually loved VT. There is not much indication in the story telling to support that. i think Nandini just used VT as she used Kandamaran and Pallavendran.
