Dear friends
They said I have a virus infection,so I can not use anjal until it is refixed ,probably tomarrow.
I want to ask Narasayya what is his 'tamil novel'.In Tamil mejority of good novels are not talking about family ties.The 'first' Tamil novel poytheevu is talking about the spritual seeking of an individual and his 'findings'.Starting from it almost all novels in Tamil are dealing with various spritual and political problems of our time.Oru puliyamaraththin kathai,JJsila kurippukal,thaakam, piraku, vekkai,maanutamvellum,vishnupuram.pinthofdarum nizalin kural....In fact the inner problems of our family ties ,especially the violence and the hidden sexuality in it are not yet considered by our writers really If narasayya is talking about lakshmi or Anuraatha ramanan I am not talking more

I am accepting your views with a certain addition .In art we are dealing with feelings only.In literature values take an important role.Literature is very closly associated with contemporary thought and spritual mood.I would say literature is not an art ,it is the art form of thought.All these are time bound.So a large portion in any literature is timebound and has no value apart from history.We consider some works as classics because they have some ,yes only some , elements which are 'peranial' or 'eternal'
What is the problem of Mohamull?it is an interesting novel.It has an easy flow of events which makes our reading smooth and pleasurable.But for this it sacrificed the very nature of a novel.A novel is a form intended to give a 'complete ' picture of life and study its problem[s] in that plain.Thi Jaa never trying to do this.See if Ranganna came to know the love of Babu[or Babus father] what a dramatic situation will arise ?If Thi Jaa really had the intention to study the deep problems of love and sexuality this kind of situations will help him trementously.Any good novelist will try to get into this kind of challenging situations which will make his enquiry more big and deep.Thi Jaa just avoid all these and nobody came to know about Babus love till the end of the novel[This may be possible in America.In India local ladies will smell it even before Babu himself came to know it]Thi Jaa is trying to tell an interesting story only.It is an interesting story indeed.But big novels are seldom make good stories .Their pursuit is totally different.It is something parellel to a philosopher's and mistic;s journey.

Today's (Sunday, the 25th March 2001) has a lead article "Living and Dying in suburban Bombay" in their weekly magazine section. This is an intro to a new Indo-Anglican novel "The Death of Vishnu" by Manil Suri, a Professor of Mathematics at the Maryland U in the USA.

So, did you ever write your thesis on the Project Management Approach to the Tamil Short Fiction? :-) I hope the quote refers to how Manil Suri as a novelist was able to retain the various threads of the novel in his head and see them all come together....
Another point of interest in the interview: Suri talks about how the various characters come to life and start demanding attention from the writer. That relates to our previous discussion of the merits/demerits of forcefully cutting a novel character down to size, thereby not allowing it to reach its full evolutionary potential.
A brief personal note on the book itself: it tries to work on several different planes through a creative metaphorical treatment of mundane middle class lives. Those familiar with the mythology/ philosophy may find the author's quest a bit shallow on that plane. Fairly good character and background development. Narrated in simple prose lightly laced with irony. Worth a read, overall.
