Mr. Vijayan, the editor of Lion Comics, has posted the following in the old Muthu Comics thread:
http://forumhub.com/tlit/20648.03.46.30.html
Since that thread is no longer visible in the forum contents page, I decided to start a new thread and repost his message. Here is the message:
From: S.Vijayan (Editor) (@ 61.1.208.92) on: Thu May 31 09:33:46
Friends,
It was great fun browsing through so much of messages regarding Muthu Comics. I notice that most of you are disappointed with the present size & quality of the COMICS CLASSICS reprints. Personally I share those feelings too.
To set things right - we intend bringing out the next issue (Kollaikara Pisasu - Mayavi adventure)in the original format with hard cover and better paper as well. If the response is encouraging - further issues will continue in the new format. (Am keeping my fingers crossed).
Thanks a lot for your interest.

Dear Kik,
Thanks for the info and I've checked the site out but nothing there yet. Needed the info for an article I'm writing (one in a series) on overseas comics---why is it so difficult to find Indian
& Tamil publishers?!
Regards,
Terry
ps. Does anyone know a website featuring Indian/Tamil comics that I can get on to,especially sites belonging to publishers?
THANKS!

Hi Terry,
If you are in touch with Mr Vijayan, probably you may know more about tamil comics by now. Anyway here is what i know about Tamil comics:
Prakash Publishers(Muthu Comics and Lion Comics) are the fore-runners of British (translated) comics in Tamil. They are in the market since 1970(or 1971). They have started with "Muthu Comics" in 70's and later from 1985, "Lion Comics". Both are in market now. Their popular heroes incluse Steel Claw (known as Irumbukkai Mayaavi(Irumbukkai means Steel Claw and Mayaavi means someone invisible in Tamil), CIDs Lawrence & David (Known as Barracuda in English - Though i'm not sure whether this is the correct english comic character name), Wing Commander George, Secret Agent Philip Corrigan, Johnny Nero (who was with British Intelligence and then become a successful businessman, his secretary is Stella), Modesty Blaise. Other characters include Phantom and Mandrake, but I don't think they are english comic characters. Some other characters are Rip Kirby, Cisco and Panjo, Buz Sawyer. All the above characters are introduced by Muthu Comics and steel claw, mandrake are still appearing, but mostly as reprints. Later when Lion comics was started in 1985 it started with a Modesty Blaise story and then Spider, Robot Archie. And the most popular hero is Tex Willer and his companion Garson. But i'm not sure whether they are(Tex Willer/Garson) english characters, may be Italian characters. In between the pulishers have attempted with some more comics along with Lion Comics. They are known as Thigil(meaning scarry in Tamil) Comics(mostly short stories), Mini-Lion and Junior Lion. The characters include Lucky Luke (not a british chracter) and Wisky and Susky(known as Wiske en Suske in Belgium comics). Other popular characters are Chic Bill and Kit Ordin. Then they have stopped the publication of Thigil, Mini-Lion and Junir Lion(may be due to economic reasons). All those characters appeared in the three comics are transferred to Lion Comics. Then recently the publishers have started a series known as Comics Classics, in which the Steel Claw, Spider, Johny Nero and Lawrence & David appear regularly. For a brief stint they have attempted publishing in English, with Spider and Robot Archie. In case you are interested i'll send you the scans of the comics, if you tell me which are the characters you are interested in as i have many comics in my collection starting from 1985.
Other comics in Tamil include Rani Comics (which is cheap compared to Muthu & Lion) started in 1985. Though the translation quality is nothing to write about, it is aimed for large circulation. The characters appeared include Modesty Blaise, Phantom, 007 and many cowboy stories and more. I don't know much about it 'coz i don't read them due to their quality. But this has got the maximum circulation as far as tamil comics is concerned.
One more comic came briefly in the Tamil comics horizon, known as Mehta Comics, again in 1984/85. To my knowledge the only character appeared in that comics was a pilot known as John (who was with British Intelligence as a pilot who loves flying, and he loses the pilot licence after coming out of BI, but using that as a carrot he was used by BI for many cases). I think only four or five issues have come out. Some other comics i have seen are Kanmani Comics (featuring Philip Corrigan).
The above is only regarding tamil comics. But there are many publishers who publish in English. One such publisher (and the largest still) is www.diamondcomics.com. You can visit their site to get the info. However the site doesn't have any info about Phantom/Mandrake, though they have published close to 100 each featuring these two characters. There was once a popular english comics in India, "Indrjal Comics", they have published many characters including Phantom, Mandrake, Rip Kirby, Flash Gordon, Buz Sawyer. They have pulished in many other languages also, including Tamil. They are no longer in the comics business. I have some of the comics with me now.
Thats all from me now. If you need any further clarifications please get in touch with me.
Regards,
Dhayal
