What do we know about Kambar. Where is he from? Why does he have Nadan attached to his name. Nadan means country in Malayalam as in Nadankozhi :-), so was he a country boy :-) Any info or pointers will be helpful.

According to IITS Tamil Lexico, "nAdan" is beacuse, he could be from a place called Kamba nAdu in Chozha nAdu.
BTW, if you look at the description for KambanAdu, it says the country is called so because Kamban is supposed to be from this country :-)

Kani,
That's interesting. Do you know where exactly Kambanadu is located in present day Tamilnadu

Kani,
Just read your Tamil posting. So would Kambanadu be mayiladurai area?
I came across a Kamban Vizha in Salem in May. It was on for a few days.

KambanAdu should be somewhere in the old
Thanjavur district.
There is a "thanippaadal" by Kamban, praising
CholanAdu. (for which there is a rebuttal by
Auvaiyaar praising Pandya kingdom).

Hi Sujatha, kani
I heard thru my friends that Kambanadu is somewhere near a place called "Therazhundur" near mayiladudurai. In fact I have heard people around that area saying Kambar's house is near that village and is neglected totally by the government, and it's now in a pathetic state.

The oral tradition says that Kamban had sung the praises of Sadaiyan
once every hundred verses. This was objected to, by saying that it makes
the kaaviyam into something of a 'narasthuthi'.
So Kamban reduced the number and sang one verse for every thousand verses.
He is reputed to have said the famous quote:
'Sadaiyan nuuRRil oruvan endRE ninaiththirundhEn. Aanaal avan aayiraththil oruvan endRu ippOdhudhaan therigiRadhu'.
That would make around eleven to thirteen verses, if the tradition is true.

I looked up Kambar in Abithana Chintamani, it goes
on about him for about 3 pages. Will post
excerpts soon. Many stories of divine intervention
and a lot of seemingly unseemly details about his
personal life. Folks it is shocking!

Much of what is mentioned in Abithana Chinthamani is new to me and I dont
know if much of it is already known and debunked. Sorry if this offends anyone.

kumuthan itta kulavaraik kooththarin
thimitham ittuth thiriyum thiraikkadal
thumitham oor puga vaanavar thuLLinaar
amutham innum ezhum ennum aasaiyaal
kulavarai = mountain, thimitham = sound (as in thillaanaa jathiswaram?)
thumi = thuLi = drop
kumuthan threw the mountain into the water;
the ocean was disturbe/churned/roiled - with a sound like that of
dancers' steps; drops of water fell on the heavens where
the devas jumped in joy hoping that
there will be more nectar for them to drink
kumuthan threw the mountain into the water rather than giving it to naLan the vaanaran building the bridge to Lanka. The devas seeing the disturbance remember the churning of the ocean when Vishnu helped them churn the ocean to get the immortal amutham.
This is from the vinotha rasa manjari (recently republished in 2 vol by paari nilayam). Several of the stories above find a place in it (e.g. 5,6,10).
