What is the meaning of the name "Sengalvaraayan"? From the "Kandar sashti kavacham" it seems to be a name of Muruga. Is it specific to some place/temple?

Do you recite the Kandar shashti kavacam daily?
Then you must be observing the kandar shashti viradam after deepavali.
These kavacmas were written by devaraya swamigal in thiruchendur. he was there bcause he wanted to commit suicide. he was suffering from stomach ache. he receited all the six kavacams there before his suicide. one kavacam per day. but miraculously, the pain disappeared.

Thevaraya SuvamigaL was a rich man who was also a poet. He lived in the 19th century.
During a certain period in his life, he was afflicted with very severe abdominal pain.
All conventional treatment failed.
He made up his mind to kill himself by drowning in the sea.
With that purpose he went to ThiruChendur.
Kandhar Shashti festival was being celebrated.
As soon as he set foot in the temple, SuvamigaL felt some releif from the abdominal pain.
He decided to stay on for the festival of six days.
He started singing kavacam songs dedicated to Murugan.
By the time he sang the sixth kavacam on the sixth day of the festival, his pain had absolutely dispppeared and after a long time, SuvamigaL was experiencing great releif.
What is a Kavacam?

A kavacam is an armour which is worn on the body for protection.
In Mantra sastra, a kavacam is a verse which is by itself, a mantra. A lengthy mantra.
It is structured in such a way as to give protection to the reciter.
There are ways and means governing the recitation of a kavaca mantra.
Unlike many other mantras, a kavacam is simpler to recite. For normal recitation no rituals are required. But for specific purposes, the kavaca recitation may need certain rituals.
The Kandhar Shasht Kavacam is one of the simpler kavacams.
A very simple recitation will do.
The SuvamigaL has said that this kavacam has to recited two times a day - morning and nightfall. It must be said with a clear mind. It must be with full attention. Cleanliness is necessary. It must be with dedication to the Lord. The mind must be focussed singly.
People who are used to such a habitual recitation, can apply this kavacam for specific purposes.
On one particular day, they may recite it thirty six times as a japam and wear the vibhuthi.
This is known as uru ERRal. That is, the vibhuthi is absorbed with the mantra. The vibhuthi becomes mantrika.

The kavacam can be recited loudly or mentally. It can be read from a text. But memorisation is the best way.
Those who are not conversant with Tamil, can get a Romanised version. They can get an audio tape of the kavacam. Sulamanggalam Sisters, Dharmapuram Swaminathan and several others have sung it.
But a kavacam is best recited and not sung.
There is certain metre, beat, and rhythmic chant in the kavacam. A proper recitation will bring out all these qualities.
Furthermore, a mantra has be chanted with what is known as its chandas. The above characteristics contribute to the chandas.
Play the audio tape.
Listen well.
There are two terms - 'hear' and 'listen'.
Most people hear; but they do not listen.
Its just like 'see' and 'look'. Most people see; but they don't look.
Well, life is like that.
So you have to listen to the kavacam.
Then read the Roman version and recite together with the audio tape.
This is a very effective way of learning the kavacam and becoming aquainted with it.
Soon you will be conversant with it.
