Very few poets can touch/inspire/electrify readers like Mahakavi Bharathiyar(MB) can.He can take you to heights of patriotism/romance/devotion in just a few beautiful words. I would like his fans to share the line that moved/thrilled you most and explain why, in what context. Please quote the entire line/stanza so your kindred souls can share the pleasure.

help, please! i've been searching the web for any of his poems in english(i'm an american) and i keep seeing articles on preserving the Tamil language so, my plea might make someone angry! i realize fully the importance of language and that some things are impossible to translate so please do not take any offense to my request! if anyone can point me in any direction to find at least some of his work translation i shall be eternally grateful!!! think of me as a yearning, shadowy presence at the edge of your world. maybe i'll never gain entrance but you can't blame me for trying.

Donna, most of the implications you see to preserve tamil language etc are definitely not directed at you. Sadly there are Tamils who are equate being educated with knowledge of English and put on airs and generally look down on Tamil as a language. Not unlike the period in England when the court language was French and the English Aristocracy looked down on English!
On the other hand a language can not gain respect and admiration from people of other languages without its body of literature being translated. However impossible the task of translating literature and poetry from one language to another, it is the only way for persons to sample other language works and widen their horizons. So please rest assured your request will excite Tamils more than it would incite them.

If you are really serious, I think you may have to order some books from India.
Another choice: If you are associated with a University, you may be able to do a search for such translations (Bharathi Poems etc) (which , I think, will be in some Universities which teach Tamil, e.g. Univ of California, Berkeley) and ask for an Interlibrary loan.Talk to a good University librarian as to how to get such books on a loan . Contact Prof. George Hart at Berkeley ;he is a Professor of Tamil and he will know if and where such books may be available.

Pasupathy, are you in Toronto? My husband and I go to Toronto quite often (we are in Rochester, NY). Could you recommend a source there for Tamil films and books? I work at the library of the University or Rochester, I'll speak to ILL tomorrow. Thanks again to both of you!

There are quite a few locations where you can find tamil books. For a good collection, you should try exclusive tamil book stores. There are two that I know of:
1. Kalai magal book store - These people have three branches in Toronto. I know of two, but I here that the largest stock is in Parliament st. In downtown. There is one at the next stop after Finch&Birchmount. There is a plaza there with many tamil stores such as Siva's Trading, Langa Emporium etc. The stock here is very good too and you will be able to get Bharathiyar's books as well as other prominent works. The other one is at Eglinton&Markham. This again is a plaza with many stores(non tamil). Gemini market is in the same plaza. You won't miss both these because of the tamil population here. It's easy to find.
2. Another store is Murugan Book Depot. I haven't been there but I heard that it's all right. These people rent films as well, tamil and malayalam. If you want other sources for films, there are many. The best stock is probably with Jeya and Brothers. The main branch.
That's about all I know. I have no idea about tamil courses in Toronto University so I can't tell much about that. Hope you find what you are looking for.

Tip: If you can't speak tamil, a good option is to rent DVD films in tamil. Some of them have been released with subtitles so you can find that helpful. One store to find DVD/VCD films in tamil is Elanthulir video store at Finch&Warden. It's in the stores right near the intersection. Next to the coffee shop. Inside the photoshop.

My warmest, most heartfelt thanks to all who have responded to my request!!! I went to the library database on monday and found: THE TAMIL STACKS! I can't believe how many Tamil books are at the U of R!!! I signed out: The Interior Landscape by A K Ramanujan, Subramania Bharati by Prema Nandakumar, volume I of The Golden Anthology of Ancient Tamil Literature (which includes info on the 25 phases of love!)Classical Tamil Prosody: an Introduction by Kamil V. Zvelebil, A Study of the Achievements of Bharathi as a Poet by K. Meenakshisundaram, Bharati by Prema Nandakumar, The Song of Songs and Ancient Tamil Love Poems and Kuruntokai An Anthology of Classical Tamil Love Poetry. I think that will keep me engrossed for a while. And thank you, too, for the Tamil/Toronto info. We went to see A R Rahman in Toronto back at the end of September and found out that there is a very big Tamil population there, I was thrilled to hear his Tamil music live because I like his Tamil film songs the best. We own a few Tamil films on DVD: Muthalvan, Kandukondain Kandukondain, Muthu and Pardiyappa - we love all of them. Only the first two have subtitles. Thank you again - all of you!

I was searching the web for Bharatiyars life history!and noticed this topic ..its amazing!yup!how many tamilians extend their helping hands to a foreigner who is interested in our bharathis works!!!!-great!!!And it was nice of her to post her appreciation ,also the infos she was able to procure from those links!

Bharatiyar has too many facets.That is what makes him brilliant.
I like the philosopher in bharathi.He was also learned in sanskrit and the vedas and definitely had a great respect for them.It seems as if he was a shakti upasaka.He was only against the blind orthodoxy.In his vacana kavidhai he says
vAyo tvameva pratyaksham brahmAsi
Similarly the poem kAlamAm vanathil aNDa kolamAmarathin meedu kaali shakti endra peyar kondu reengaara mittulavum oru vandu
tazhal kaalgalum vizhi neela anna athhuvaakalennum kaalgal aarudayadhena kandu
marai kaanum munivor sonnaar pandu.
What a symbolism.Only a person well-versed in the vedas and upanishads can construe such an imagery.
