person like kundavai and poongulali were inspiration for many. the talents of poongulali was depicted well in the story. the humor part of the novel will be nice. every character has its significance and hhave thier motive. even ravidasan works for pandiya kingdom and he is living for his ambtion.
the songs will be nice. especially
"allikadalum ondiruka agakadalthan ponguvathen"

Hmmmm
so you seem to be more inspired by "samudra kumari" than "ilaya pratti" . ;-)
Any particular reasons ??

Visalakshi:
'Samudra Kumari' is a jubilant character; very down to earth at one moment, living in the moon, the next; 'Ilaya praatti' was quite a good administrator and more 'composed', fit to be a Royal.
naturally, most would go for SK!
but, one cannot but 'just adore and admire' IP in the prison scene, when she holds VV's hand...and says 'indha karangalai patriya en karangal, vEru karathaip patrAdhu'..
it makes every lad to yearn for such a woman in his life and
it makes every girl to be given an opportunity to 'assure' her man like that.
Kalki is a 'mesmoriser'.

Hi buddies,
Iam a great fan of ponniyin selvan. The character i like most will be obviously VANATHI!!!
please share your thoughts about her!!!!!!

hi vanathi
many people do not admire vanathi's character cause she is depicted as timid, shy and of course always fainting, but personally i prefer vanathi over samudira kumari. i think it is because she is so focussed and single minded in her life (unlike poonkuzhali)
another female character that i like is manimegalai. of course my favourite is kunthavai and none else.
thinking about what u folks said, i do think nandini's nature can be traced in THE famous personality ( a mixture of evil, good, attractive and making us believe that somewhere beneath all that lies a really good person)

ofcourse vanathi is a timid girl, she had strong mind and lot of talents like singing and playing veena. she is close to KP/IP. I adore SK for her will power and her physical strength. (sailining to lanka in one night and saving Vandiyadevan when he falls down)
one another interesting character is AlwarKadiyan. the events in lanka prison (fight with cat)will make us laugh whenever we think about that.

Its interesting to note that most of the characters are etched in the minds of so many people. Been following this thread for some time.
No one seems to talk about the guy who gave the name for this captivating work.
In fact krishnamurthy himself in his epilogue says all his efforts were to converge on the "thyaga sigaram" idea. He accepts failure if that act is not talked about as the crux of the novel.
Was arulmozhi varman not portrayed well by kalki ?

Srini:
i very well remember that. In fact kalki was refering to Sri Rama's disinclination towards attaining the throne and wanted his hero's (PS/ AV) similar action to be the climax of his novel.
It was that noble quality in AV that enabled him become a great ruler when he came to power later (very much like Rama Rajyam).
But a novel is read admired MORE for its captivating characters, turn of events, etc. AV's renunciation is overshadowed by Periya PazhuvEttaraiyar's death in the courtyard. that may be one reason; other is that every reader wanted their hero to succeed (after all the plots and counter plots).
AazhvArk kadiyAn is one of the most interesting and important character; someof his tantrums are hilarious and thought-provoking.

it is true. aazhvarkkadiyan is the most stable and sensible character throughout the novel i think (almost equivalent to AV and IP). he is the one who shows up in many important events of the story.
i think, by involving us too much with Vandiyathevan from the beginning of the novel, kalki could not later make his readers accept AV as the actual hero (cause by the time AV makes his dramatic appearance VT is already etched in readers minds and naturally so since we follow the story thro his eyes)

the dramatic appearance of AV and the life of soliders in lanka was depicted well. the leadership approach of AV and Karikalan will be entirely different. the humanitarian and democratic approach of AV is worth for today's leaders and manager.
Kalki had used many other literature which will induce usto go through other works also. for example, Thirupavai songs and Thirukural(astrologer's Discussion about spying)

Kalki seems to have had a Raamayana fixation - if Rama's exile is a key element of PS, Seeta's abduction is a major plot element of SS.
On AV vs VT: AV's sacrifice like Rama's is not something that normal people do. Extraordinary acts and people are admired, but not loved like a son of the soil who achieves fame and fortune (VT).
Vaanathi: Actually her character changes through the course of the novel - she loses her timidness as she becomes jealous of SK. In fact, I don't think we can see the change as explicitly in any other characters. Creating such a 3-dimensional character is a great accomplishment of Kalki's. I think Vaanathi Pathippagam was founded by Mr Thirunavakkarasu because he fell in love with this character - named his daughter Vanathi too, I think.
Going back a page - nandhini, madurAntakan/amarabhujangan, and the child pandiyan do not meet after madurAntakan leaves thanjavur. I think Kalki left it like this because for the next couple hundred years, the pandyas were splintered among multiple claimants/heirs. So, the cholas could conquer gangai, kadaaram, kalingam etc. It was only with maaravarman (maduraiyai meetta:-) sundarapandiyan that they were able to shake off the cholas (even then they continued to have multiple cadet branches ruling from different places - korkai, tenkaasi, etc).
Kundavai at one point agrees to forget/forgive Nandhini and is willing to ask for Nandhini's forgiveness - I think when she believes VT loves Nandhini. I don't remember if they ever meet?

hi friends,
Nice to hear ur responses!!!Though vanathi has been portrayed as shy, timid & fainting girl, her love for p.s made her outcome all these abilities. I admire her stubborness as she fulfilled her promise ,not to accept the throne.
Regarding AV's portryal,Kalki had done much than expected.Inspite of his delayed appearance,he captures the main frame of the story & the eventual hero of the story!!!!
I would like to know the details about the queen who actually adored the throne along with p.s????

PS is going to be staged as TV serial from April 14 in oneof leading Tamil TV. read today's Dinamani on internet - in fact two groups r making it for two channels!!

Vanathi,
From If u read nandhi Purathu nayaki u'll come to know Chinna Pazhuvettariar's daughter is the one who became Patta Mahishi and adored AV's throne.....probably AV is no Rama as far as marriage is concerned

One more observation one caan find the vast differnce in the pleasure u get while reading PS and Nandhipurathunayaki although bothe the stories revolve with same characters.....Itz obvious that kalk's uncanny knack of portraying characters and situations and more importantly his sense of humour makes PS an all time great....
BTW did PS win any award?I think it deserves the highest literature award....i know Alai osai won lot of recognition......asa far national awards are concerned not all Indians can appreciate PS but they could appreciate Alao osai...that is probably the reason Alai osai score over PS
- From: kik (@ ts3-171.silcon.com)
on: Mon Mar 11 01:01:10
PS didn't win any award - however, it's the best loved of Kalki's novels. Even he said that he wanted to be remembered for alai osai, not PS.
Nanthipurathu naayaki is a waste of time - unreadable once you've read PS.
AMV had 8 queens, a daughter each from one of the major chieftains (like pazhuvettaraiyar etc), and a pandya and a chera princess. Dunno if vaanathi is included in this list, since Kalki/Vikraman kill her off using her vow as an excuse. Vikraman's hypothesis that chinna pazhuvettaraiyar's daughter (sakthi vidaangi - ulaga muzhuthudaiyaal as the pattap per ring a bell) is just that hypothesis. There's no reason why vaanathi could not have been the queen known by this pattap per (historically speaking).

on: Mon Mar 11 02:15:03
kik:
yes. Nandhipurathu Nayagi is not so impressive. Vikraman (i believe it is Naa. Parthasarathi) must have been so drawn by PS that he wanted to write a sequel. also, like someone pointed out, kalki stopped PS at that 'Coronation' point.
Vikraman wanted to say how many more years VV struggled to get the hands of Kundhavai.
But the tempo was not maintained.
'Alai Osai' got the award more because it was contemporary and involved freedom struggle. it is a good novel but it is no match for PS, with all its intrigue, treachery, greed, love, family bonds, religious fervour, Sri lankan links, a lot more.
the 'nithiraa devi' who frequently embraces VV also has been depicted so amusingly.
