It depends on 2 things. The source of the stain and the nature of the fabric.
So if you are more specific I can help -
Most common:
Red wine - use (you will be surprised) White wine or Vinegar
Uncooked Vegetable stains - baking soda
all whites clothing - just bleach them with chlorox
ball point ink - (once you wash teh cloth it is difficult, but if you did not get it wet!) place a paper napkin under the stain, use a piece of cotton, or anoterh napkkin soaked in nail polish remover adn gently rub teh ink stain, it will come off and will be collected in teh napkin underneath!
Good Luck
I can help with others too

Hello Raman,
Can you please help me remove Red Kumkum stain from a Beige carpet? This happened 3 years ago. I tried many things on it, including Vinegar, Baking soda and Carpet stain remover sprays. It became lighter, but still shows...Recently I tried Clorox Oxygen Action also. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

If Kumkum Stain is from natural sources Kumkum - which is usually Tumeric, and if your carpet is wool, try a warm solution of baking soda.
Vinegar is acidic and helps with alkaline fabrics - and Wool is a acidic fabric, and so you have to use something alkaline - First I would try baking soda, and if that does not work, try with Rubbing Alcohol.
It also depends on the first chemical that was used, It may have strengthened the dying process instead of removing.
If it not a natural substance - like a dye (usually they are more pink in color compared to Kumkum - which is usually more Yellow / brown colors. They U can try Nail polish remover.
While using both these attempts, I would suggest u to contain teh spread of teh color by having so me dry napkins around to ensrue that the color does not spread.
Good Luck

Hello Raman,
Thanks for the prompt response with the scientific explanation. As you wrote, I must have made it worse by applying different chemicals without knowing their actions! I'll try these and let you know the result.

Hello Raman,
You seem to be very knowledgeable about the stains. I would like to know if there is a way to remove an old oil stain on my kids' clothes. Thanks in advance.
Prabha.

Hello Raman,
I treated the Red Kumkum stain with a solution of warm baking soda. The treated area is still a little wet, but looks lighter. I'll see how it is when dry. If the stain is still there, I'll treat it again with Rubbing Alcohol and let you know what happened. Thanks a lot.

Dear Al,
Sorry for late response:
Here are soem more answers, hope they work:
Oil Stain for natural fabrics - try Nail POlish remover.. that may work. If teh satin is synthetic, it may dissolve teh fabric, so check in a corner not visible, and if the cloth is inert, try with nail polish remover.
I am glad that the carpet stain got removed.
As to the spagetti sauce - try vinegar it will work.
As to your Kid's light colored dress, if you dont mind makin git white, why dotn u bleach it, that's teh only solution you have now. (SORRY!!)
Good luck every one

Water Stain from Uniform - wash it again - if it does not go - wash it with Vinegar.
nail Polish - Elementry Dear Alex, Use Nail Polish Remover....
Pomogranate from khaki - this is a challenge - What fabric is your Khaki - my first suggestion is to go with dilute vinegar for Synthetics and baking soda solution for Cottons and wools!!

Daniella,
Pomegranate and other fruit stains may be removed from cotton or khaki by using an old method: stretch the cloth over a bowl, colander or sink. From a small distance (8 to 12 inches) slowly pour a stream of boiling water on the stain. Of course, this can only be used on material that can withstand the heat of the water. It usually works wonders.
