* Keep home well ventilated.
* Keep trash cans clean and empty them as often as possible.
* Keep kitchen, sink clean.
* Keep carpet clean (do vacuum atleast once a week, steam vacuum atleast once in 6 mns).
+
* Use frangranced candles.
+
* light candle or keep vinegar in a cup while deep frying. It reduces the smoke, smell.
And, 1 main reason why Americans keep their home w/o bad smell is, they dont cook like us (atleast from the scratch).

Hi Kavi,
I live in Boston, I use to keep windows open (little bit at least) when cooking even when it snows. Ventilation is the major factor. It takes few days to be odor free.
I found many Indians dont keep their home (carpet, floor, restroom, kitchen, kitchen-cabinets-tables-sinks, trash can, even dumping unwashed clothes!) clean, certainly that makes odor.
Good luck!

Hello Kavi,
Try this out.
Keep charcoal (Large but lightweight )pieces at the back of kitchen cupboards and near spices.
Change them regularly.Large and ligh weight pieces have excellent absorption power.
The smell of spices would be absorbed and will remain absorbed.
And as Hema said, keep proper ventilation.

rohit/saad,
you first need to go to a psychiatrist and figure out who you really are before you worry about smelly people. Mental health is more important.

Hi one thing u can do is buy any of the sprays people use to scent clothing.. like febreeze, bounce or all... bounce works really good.
another trick tack a fresh dryer sheet on the heat vent.. when the heat comes out the smell of dryer sheet will come...
i am american but when i cook from scratch ..90% time it is indian only... i esp tell difference in smell when i cook north indian.. because south indian is so fragrant (good smelling) to me I don't notice it...
but the other poster is right.. mostly americans don't cook from scratch.. most american foods are not cooked.. south indian food is a lot of popping mustard seeds.. which i love that smell, but most americans don't like.. or frying with fresh onion and garlic.. this is why american homes don't smell so much.. or they smell different (cook more meat than even traditional hindu nonvegetarians..) americans also seem to use alot more frozen foods in microwave or oven.. so this does not smell as much when cooking.. hope this helps.

Hema, I don't know where you got your statistics but most Americans do still cook from scratch. It's what is used in the recipes that makes the difference as far as smells are concerned. Curry for one has a lingering unappealing oder. Also, Americans are much more dilligent than Indians about masking unpleasant body oders. A little deoderant between daily bathing will help.

What is the big deal here? Body odor?!?!
Why be so trivial? Condemning people just because they have a certain smell about them.
Jeeez,get a life all, start accepting people for who they are; not how they smell.

Hello All,
A tip that I use to avoid heavy smells from settling down is to light a small candle next to the stove. For some reason it works. For the rest of the left odor, I use a small amount of baking soda spread in a plate. Also..its good if you spread some of it on the carpet, as it absorbs odor like the charcoal does.

Do some surgery so that your olfactory nerves stop working. You won't know any smell. People who have polyp problems inside thier nose are lucky, they know no smell!!!

Do you know the muslims doesn't take bath for many days that is why they use strong scents. before pointing indians see how u smell. you know indians are the only one who takes bath early in the morning and do puja, not like u, u people can do namaz without taking bath but not indian hindus, with out taking bath we can't even sit before god. so watch ur tounge.
