Dear Freinds ,
I am attemting to translate some of Bharathiyars Poems from tamil to English and I hope it will be helpful Knowing others about some south indian Saints and the beauty of Tamil poems
Looking wealth for day to day living,
Babbling meaningless stories and
Concerned about the suffering.
Pain in the Heart,
Harming others
In selfish desire.
Aging in agony then
The Death takes over in vain.
Like the ones above, some ignorant people,
Bharathi is not going to loose this battle
-Bharathi
Can any one provide me some english translation of Bharathi Songs???? or can help me in translation?
Regards
Imthiyaz

Imthiyaz,
Nice thought! There have been many such translations ; I recall :
1) Poems: Subramanya Bharathi ,National Council of Educational Research and Training, New Delhi, 1982.
2) Prema Nandakumar, Poems of Subramanya Bharathi, Sahitya Akademi, 1977.
I think the following have also translated some:
A.SrinivasaRaghavan, H.Jesudasan .
Perhaps you can try to see what has already been accomplished and try other poems.
Bharathi himself has translated some of his poems!

Here ia a part of Bharathi translating himself:
In Each Other's Arms
Thou to me the flowing Light,
And I to thee, discerning sight;
Honied Blossom thou to me,
Bee enchanted I to thee;
O Heavenly Lamp with shining ray,
O Krishna, Love, O nectar-spray,
With faltering tongue and words that pant
Thy glories, here, I strive to chant.

To anyone who would like to translate Bharathi..
remember that this guy was revolutionary in that he actually used common words, that people could understand, as opposed to restraining himself to sanga-th-thamizh.
When you translate, don't put arbitrary restraints on yourself like rhyme, and form. Try rather to capture the passion, the essence of his poems.
"When I put my finger in the fire, Nandalala
It feels like you and takes me higher, Nandalala"
is one pathetic example I've seen of this 'true poetic' translation style.
Another was some bozo who translated "vaLLal perum pasukkaL" from Andal's Tiruppavai as "big donor cows".
Remember your translation must reflect the spirit of poetry, sound as beautiful in the language you are translating TO, as Bharathi is in Thamizh. And that shall be your only guidng principle.

Dear Sathiya: You can get good translations of Bharati (of course not all of them) by Prema Nandakumar and the great granddaughter of Bharati, Dr. Vjaya Bharati. Sahitya Akademi publications. Bharati himself has translated a few of his poems, which are published by Annam Publications of Sivagangai, in a book titled "Bharati as a Translator". Edited by C. Viswanatha Iyer, younger brother of Bharati.
There is a translation of Panchali Sabadham by Ha. Ki. Vaalam (Vow of Panchali). I am not able to call it a very good translation.
If you are doing a project on Bharati and Shelly, do read a really in-depth study by Raghunathan - Bharatiyum Shelliyum (New Century Book House publication).

I am answering in English because I have a feeling that you may not have Tamil fonts and may not be able to read if I post in Tamil.
I would request all of us to please download the necessary TSCII Tamil fonts and post in Tamil. After all, we are discussing Tamil literature.
In case anyone needs translations of particular poems/pieces, I think I can help. Please do not hesitate to contact me.
BTW, what is the Bharati song in Kandukonden Kandukonden that is referred above? (Sorry. I am an ignoramus in this area. :-))

Dear Sathiya:
I believe that there is a more recent English translation of Bharathi's songs ( perhaps the entire collection?) by an English/American Professor published by Tanjore Tamil University. I saw this book briefly at: New Book Lands , 52-C North Usman Road, T.Nagar, Chennai-600017. Ph: 8232771,
8202006. Fax: 8253609. Since I was in a hurry, I did not note down the details; sorry. Please call the Bookstore, and talk to one Mr.Srinivasan. You can mention my name (from Toronto, Canada) and ask for the book to be sent to you . They have only a few books available and it may be out of print. ( I was told that Dr. A.Kalam bought a whole lot from this Bokstore to give them as presents to some people in the Govt of India.) I think this may be perhaps the best book for your purpose.
