What about the much advertised 'Smirnoff'?
How do you grade these brands?

How do you grade them? Try them, see how smooth they are and see if they agree with your body the day after. Generally speaking when it comes to Vodka, the cheaper it is the coarser and harsher the stuff, it may hold true for most spirits, but especially in Vodka it's true.

Udhaya, FYI I dont know of Tanqueray vodka, only gin. As far as the 'best' vodka stakes go, these things are moot in the case of vodka (unlike whisky, beer, wine) because of its manufacturing process and composition. Vodka essentially is ethyl alcohol and pure water, nothing else. If you've got good pure ethanol and clear water youve pretty much got the ultimate vodka. Everything else is just branding for an otherwise comodified product

Vodka is a distilled spririt drink. made from fermented potato skins( often mixed with fermented grain). its is usually double distilled. the lack of flavoursome ingredients leads to the subtle to non-existant taste of vodka. most of you wouldn't be able to tell the difference between various brands. As smootheness does not come into consideration with vodka, as it does with Malt whisky

on: Mon Mar 4 09:09:23
Smoothness also counts in Vodka. You can feel the diff. between smirnoff and the Romonov.Romonov is so harsh when you drink and you'll feel dehydrated much on the next day.Smooth vodka's won't dehydrate you much.
I like vodka b'cos it won't leave any smell or taste but I dislike it for ,it'll dehydrate you badly.

on: Tue Mar 5 00:50:42
i think you'll find that it is the alcohol content that dehydrates you not the level of smootheness. since the alcohol of most vodka is pretty much the same, i dont see how your dehydration level should differ( mind over matter i think!!!!)

Unless vodka is flavoured you won't be able to tell a difference if it's clean and of good quality.

vodka was invented by the famous Russian Chemist Mendelev. because the russian people were getting sick from drinking various home brewed alcoholic moonshine, the government decided that it would commission Mendelev to invent an alcohol that can be mass produced and was safe to drink.
Mendelev then mixed 50% water with 50% pure ethanol(Alcohol) by weight. this produces a drink with approx 40% alcohol volume. various esters are added in minute amounts to alter the taste. the pure alcohol can be distilled from grain(absolut) or Potato peels. since only pure alcohol is used, there is no way of tasting the origins of the alcohol.
the flavour is only small amounts of esters each company adds to their mix

Let me tell you guys one thing, I've sampled a lot of vodka's in my lifetime, including the fancy brands like Belvedere and grey goose but I have found they are not worth the price. Stick to absolute vodka (swedish in origin) you can't go wrong with it!

WOW, you gus must not be vodka drinkers, you can TOTALLY tell the difference between good vodkas. Taste test a few in one night, and the difference will astound you. Lukswana vs. Ketel One vs. stolichnaya vs. skyy vs. smirnoff, each has it's own undertone, difference in finish, and great contrast in overtones. The smoothness is also very distinct. It takes a brash young'un to proclaim all good vodka is the same...

If I have a cheaper vodka in my Martini, it will give me several side effects such as not being able to breathe and I get nautius. Which there was something less expensive than Grey Goose as that doesn't bother me...I would love to know the difference of ingredients and wish I could find something less expensive than Grey Goose with same ingredients....

Try Utimate Vodka (from Poland) if so inclined. Pricey yes, ($35-$50) but nothing I've had compares...including Ketel One, Grey Goose, Stoly etc.
