If you are like me, who doesn't like the wine too dry, you'll probably like Port wine. One of my favourites is Graham's Port (Portugal). Port wine comes in two styles - tawny (aged in wooden casks) and vintage (aged in bottles) - the former being less sweet of the two. By the way, I am told cheap Port is sometimes sold as a mixture of Red and White wines - so beware. Recently tried a Port wine in India which was pretty good - will be back with the name when I remember it.
Other (semi-dry) Red wines I recommend:
Chateau de Fargues (France) and Ravenswood Zinfandel (California).

Pardon me for asking this, but how many kinds of wines are there, like red, white, etc. What essentially are the differences between these (making, taste, specialities, occasions, etc.) ?

Broadly speaking:
Red and white wines are derived from red and green grapes respectively. White wines are much lighter bodied and sweeter than Red wines, mostly had with appetizers and snacks. Red wines are full bodied and stronger and are usually an acquired taste. Red wines are had with the meals. Dessert wines are made of both red and white wines.
In the U.S. they classify all wines based on the grape flavor (Chardonnay, Merlot, Pinot Noir, etc)
In France, they classify wines based on the region they are from. I believe that's how the rest of the world classifies it as well, but I'm not sure.

Robert Mondavi's Merlot is a great wine. I highly recommend it.

thaththuvavaathy:
1. You changed "ungaL" to "unthan" to fit cadence/rhythm rules. But "ungaL" has two possible interpretations a) your, b)your-alcohol(un-kaL). You lost the fine overtones and the secondary fruity flavours you could have provided to your kuRaL. Such subtle notes are much appreciated by wine afficianados.
2. You cant copyright it till 2999. copyright notices can only refer to past dates. Further it is only for 50 years. Mickey Mouse is going to be in the public domain in a couple of years. Disney is waging a huge behind the scenes battle in the congress.
3. Take it easy. The advice is a little too strong the for Red Wine thread :-).

i just want to know WHAT THE DIFFERENCES RED & WHITE WINE!!!

white wine is made from green grapes, but can also be made from red grape varieties, however the skins of the grapes are not crushed, thereby preventing a red colour. an example of this is sauvignon. which comes as Sauvignon blanc(white wine) and cabernet Sauvignon(the same grape but had the skins squeezed providing a red colour.
otherwise the red and white difference is primarily grape skin colour.
Tyrrell's Moon Mountain Chardonnay
Tyrrell's McClaren Vale Shiraz

Normally Red wine is served at room temperatures. These are not to be refrigerated. White wines are served chilled (Chardonnay, Champagne, Pinot Grigio (my personal favorite amongst white wines).
Red wines are drier than white wines. For all in here "Cabernet Sauvignion" is a taste of Heaven on Earth. Among the Red Wine types that I have a preference for - Cab Sauvignion/Merlot, Shiraz/Cab Sauvignion blends (Lindemann's from Australia). A close second would be Shiraz/Syrah (dry with a great aftertaste) and Merlot.
Port (really good with chocolate ice cream) is also great. Beaujolais is good provided it comes from a French vintner. I did not like Burgundy much but that was probably because it was not a good brand.
There are other reds out there that I would like someone else to comment on - Sangiovesse and Chianti (Red wines from Italy). Please keep this forum alive. There is nothing more hedonistic in the world than a good wine (period).

Port is something that is cosumed after dinner and that too in a very small quantity. Also it is relatively cheap and very sweet.
You can have a good read about wines here:

I like OZ wines ( have lived there and developed a taste for them ).
You don't have to spend a lot of money to enjoy a good wine - about $10.00 is enough to find some good product.

I love wine, but I'm no connoisseur. What is the difference among reds such as cabernet sauvignon, pinot noir, chianti, and merlot? On the dry-o-meter, where do these wines fall? I would appreciate the feedback.
