Somebody tell me what does it mean by "AGED 12 YEARS". Does it mean that it has been there waiting for me for 12 Years??? Please let me know the truth.

Try some of the Whiskies aged in Port, Sherry or Madeira barrels.
This process imparts a deeper richer flavour to the spirits- a good one is Glenmorangie, and Famous Grouse is branching out into this area.
If you are going to buy a decent Scottish Malt-it is a waste to add lots of soda water and ice, just add a dash of still spring water to loosen the flavours.

The usual indicator is; add enough spring water to your whisky until your nose doesnt get a prickley feeling when you smell the glass( with the whisky in it)

What i have said is the generally correct method of serving whiskies of any kind. if someone requests their whisky just on ice then serve as they like. most drinkers have their own preference and you will benefit from just simply asking them how they like to drink whisky

As blends go, I think Johnnie Walker does it well. It's rich, has a full body and a smoothness that no single malt can match. Sure, single malts have tons of personality, but none has left my mouth feeling so satisfied as JW Black Label and especially the JW Green Label (Pure Malt). Pure Malt is excellent over ice with a cigar.
When scotch is put into the barrels it is clear in color. So how does it get it's golden glow? Because they are not new oak barrels...You'll be interested to know that all scotch whiskeys are aged in used oak casks that were previously used for either bourbon or sherry (or madiera). The bourbon barrels came from Tennessee or Kentucky, the sherry casks from Spain.

I recently come into my posession 2 bottles of whiskey, one a Irish Whiskey, named "Bushmills"
the other a Scotch Whisky called "Bell's Finest"
not being a whiskey drinker, was wondering if any of these 2 bottles is of good standard.

To answer your question, "aged 12 years" means that it was in a barrel for a dozen years. Unlike wine, Scotch does not continue to age and improve once it is bottled. That is why it is expressed as years aged and not as a specific date. To be called Scotch, it must be from Scotland and aged at least three years. It is contained in used, oaken barrels usually left over from Sherry or Burbon production. Smokey or woody smelling Scotch is made from grain dried over peat fires. Blended Scotch like JB, Johnnie Walker or Dewers has whiskey from a variety of sources and is blended to achieve a specific taste. Single-malt Scotch is from a single distillery. There is as much of a science to knowing single-malt Scotch as there is for French wine, for example. If you intend to waste it on sweet, mixed drinks, use a blended Scotch. A good widely-available single-malt is The Glenlivit.

I have a few questions. Ya'll seem to be a lot of men who know their stuff. For a report on Prohibition and the illegal make'n of hooch, I'd like to know if anyone knows what all went into sour mash whiskey and what have you. Thank you so much for your help.

Anna:
Sour Mash means that it contains yeast. I do not know a whole lot about sour mash whiskeys except for the basics. Generally, sour mash is added to Bourbon or Tennessee Whiskey. Bourbon is similar to Scotch except that it is aged in new, charred, oaken barrels and is made largely from maze corn rather than malt. Tennessee whiskey is similar to Bourbon except that it is filtered through charcoal for a mellow taste. The best known sour mash is Jack Daniels Tennessee whiskey. Frankly, I find the stuff horribly sweet. I prefer Wild Turkey straight [50%] corn Bourbon. It is best taken neat and has a woody smell that lingers in ones nose.

I have tried many single malts and blended brands in the US. I was in London and tried a 25 year old single malt that was smoother than wine. How can I find reliable vendors of the most best scotch.

Glenfiddack or Glenlivet or nothing. I am a confirmed Scotch drinker (I'm a Brit). Please don't insult your guests with cheap booze. JB is not a good Scotch..infact I think it might be illegal to refer to it as such in some parts of Scotland!
(Had to change the spelling of Glenfidd*k because the internet folks insist it's a dirty word like Old Turkey isn't?)

To the johnnie Walker drinker, try Glen Garioch. It's as smooth and rich as any but not overpowering.
For a "peaty" drink, get any of teh Islay scotches. They come from the west coast and can knock your socks off with the taste of the sea.
Glenlivet and Glenfiddich are ok but there;s a lot better.

JB Rare is very much a ladies whisky. top seller in England along with Teachers and Grants.
Bells is the best seller in scottish pubs along with Famous Grouse & Whyte & McKays.
Sadly many malts are bottled for export only, so if you want the best selection of Scotch Malt Whiskies go to Italy!
