Moulin Rogue was a great movie when i saw it, but it seemed that, after it left the theater, it was erased from everyone's memory.
I just want to know how everyone else reacted to this movie.

Ah, pretty good. A hit for young teenage girls. Somewhat innovative. I appreciated the effort and the risk doing something different

Now a days, you can hardly see any directors risking their careers producing something SOOOOOO ORGINAL...

The music and cinematography was phenominal. It is one of those rare movies which is truly "candy for the eyes and ears"

All fair, but have to tell you that Baz Luhrmann overdid things here. While he was able to balance style and subtance in "Willam Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet", here it turns out to be one big, crowded and glossy calendar. Kidman and McGregor were cool. Especially their vocals! Wow, that was a revelation. As a musical, it touches brilliance at times. This, in my book, will go down as something which tried a bit too far. Worth a watch, though. For the lead players, for the stunning visuals and for the grandiose feel.

This was, in my opinion, another of those unreasonably hyped films and this holds especially for Indian audiences who are already used to and saturated with the entire concept of a song-n-dance extravaganza taking the place of narrative.
The visuals are impressive, no doubt; the huge sets are awash in eye-candy and the camera's numerous swoops and pans take your breath away...for the first 10 minutes. After this you realize that the film is moving in a kind of loop with the same cycle of shots trying to claim your attention for its entire duration. There's just so much you can appreciate of popular songs being woven (in frequently mangled form) to fit into the groove of this musical. The film misses the tremendous cinematic value of contrast between the reality of Parisian street-life and the glitzy illusions of its music halls. The performances are pretty much of the cardboard n' candy-floss variety trademarked by ye typical Hollywood studio romance flick. Nicole Kidman is irritatingly out-of-place and Ewan MacGregor appears to have completely discarded his Trainspotting roots. Supporting characters are uniformly ridiculous, with John Leguziamo asking to be strangled with barbed wire for his clumsy portrayal of Toulouse Lauterec, the sensitive artist whose illustrations were in no small way responsible for the fame of the Moulin Rouge nightclub. Jim Broadbent as the freaked out owner Lidler is good in an over-the-top way for some of the scenes.
Even 'William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet', never in itself a great film scores higher on my list than this self-indulgent tripe. Pass me another aspirin.

ravenus,
if you're going to put a movie down, at least spell peoples' names the right way. 'nuff said.
I loved this movie; the sheer creativity of it all just took my breath away; and the movie resonates with the one quote that has stuck with me since I have seen it-
"the greatest thing you'll ever learn is just to love, and be loved in return."
As Zidler had said, "I only speak the truth", and I do. There is a deeper meaning to this movie, it's up to you to interpret it. It's not just all song and dance. Think METAPHOR.

I think it was a classic fairytale that connects and plays in an intelligent way with the history of forbidden love stories. I was touched, even if 1 expected it to be a total sappy movie.

visiually stunning and the peformances were exceptional. as a former dancer i found the music and choregraphy unlike anything i've seen on film in a long time. the vocals were right on time and i cry every time i see it.

I think the simple fact that a topic started a year ago, that's still being talked about should tell you enough about how wonderful this movie really is.
It's a visual masterpiece, and has become my favorite movie, which up until seeing Moulin Rouge, had been Gone With The Wind, which is a tough act to follow!
I really believe this is one of Nicole Kidman's BEST performances, and it's one Ewan McGregor will always be remembered for.

I am addicted to Moulin Rouge. Haven't learned all the words to a musical since West Side Story. I watch over and over. It will go down as a cult classic, or may be my cult classic

i love moulin Rogue. The acting is fantastic. I must admit the general feel to the movie is slightly weird but that is why i think it is so great. The mixture of the songs we all know is clever and the way the "Spectacular Spectacular" tells the audience what is going on through-out the musical is ingenious and original. I'd give it top marks. I agree with the positive comments on here and i think the ending is extemely good. I don't cry over movies but when Ewan's character Christian was sobbing after satine dies, i was too. He is a fanastic actor and the last scene is one of the best i have ever seen. Baz Luhrmann is a very talented director and this movie fits in with the red curtain triolgy. 10/10 from me
