Thank you very much, guys. Can anyone explain the climax. It was indeed one of the most beautiful scene I had ever witnessed on screen, but I'm afraid I'm a bit too dumb to understand it.
By the way, you might know this already but if you look at the following letters to the letters H, A and L in HAL you see IBM. This was brought up to A. C. Clarke, but he waved it aside saying that it's just a coincidence.

I'm going to give a different interpretation of the movie which you might enjoy.
If you take the sound that was played when the monkeys were jumping around at the beginning of the flick (sounds like angels singing in a high pitched tone), and combine this with the hollow sound that was played when the astronaut was out in the pod and HAL, the computer, wouldn't let him back into the space craft, (a hollow tone not unlike what you hear in a sea shell when you place it up to your ear), the two of these sounds combined, are a similar sound to that which you may hear as you are dieing or rarely when going out of the body.
It is a tone that comes from the center of your being, and is spoken of by the psychic D. Scott Rogo in his book, "Nad: Psychic Study of the Music of the Spheres" available at:

In any case, Christ said (refer to the "The Nag Hammadi Library in English") that the kingdom of God is within and around you. I believe he also said that one day we would all do things greater than he has done. How can a common HU man do things greater than a part of the trinity (GOD), without being also a part of GOD? Answer, unless he's also an aspect of that GOD, he cannot do equal. See?

i too found the ending of 2001 a bit too surrealistic.but from what i have gathered i think kubrick has given thrown the ball 2 the audience to interpret the way they want to.i deciphered the ending as meaning that life came to earth from outer space and the protagonist is sent out to the galaxies to seed life in some new planet.anyway 1 thing i am sure of is when i watch the movie 5 years from now i shall see a different meaning.i consider it the greatest m ovie to be ever made.
