there was an interview with mariya irudhayam in kumudam some time back in which he sounded very bitter and frustrated. especially at the cricketers who enjoy all the glitz.

I’m glad that this and another thread(Maheshwariya theriyumaa?)have been started on these less noticed and sparingly advertised sportspersons, who though not celebrated nor centred in an auora of limelight, have nevertheless brought many laurels to the country and done her proud.
I would like to impart some info about Mr.Mariya Irudhayam, who happens to live in the same area as ours(Vepery,Madras)and is also a good acquaintance of our family.Mr.Irudhayam started his carrom playing mainly as a hobby with friends in a club. However, the game presented a much more serious attraction to him and very soon he became quite unbeatable at it.Observing his skills at the board, his nimbleness of fingers & an overall dedication, friends realized the potentials of a champion player in him.It was thro his friends’ urge, father's encouragement and by dint of extreme hard work, practice & sincerity of purpose, that he has risen to his present position.
Mr.Irudhayam, twice world champion in carrom, also has to his credit the Indian title as well as having won many tournaments outside the country. However,it was not without overcoming many hurdles that he reached his present state, some of which included the sad lack of glamour to the game,a pitiful lack of sponsors, the depressing backup he received by authorities(who could’ve done much more to foster the game and make it more popular) and finally the biggest blow of all,the loss of his girl child. However,he emerged from all such impediments, with productive & proud results only to be mercilessly ignored by sponsors, authorities and media attention,as before.
At this juncture, may I clarify a pt regarding Balaji’s info.Mr.Irudhayam is noted to be of a soft spoken & retarding nature that I can hardly imagine him making any bitter statements in an interview.Any rightful grievances that he may have voiced must’ve been blown up by the magazine, only to make up a splashy headline(Incidentally, may I point out that last year when (finally!) Mr.Irudhayam & Kurraleeswaran were selected as the 2 sportsmen from TN to receive the Arjuna award, this magazine made a full coverage of Kurraleeswarn’s visit to Delhi, his interview & other details and most unpardonably forgot(or did not care!) to even make a mention of the other TN recepient,Mr.Irudhayam!).
It is really hard on a player to be constanly left out of focus by especially the media and rather unforgivingly by the same,be deprived of his due recognition.(Here, allow me to extend my allusion to all those less celebrated wt.lifters,Triathlon athletes,Kappadi players & similar others making silent waves & goin unnoticed!).If this were to continue, the player’s dedication, interest, and security in the game is bound to dampen in the long run paving way for undesirable outcomes.
A sport of any nature is a sport after all.We were once champions in hockey, but that now happens to be history.Cricket,we can raise/slump to any level unpredictable.Tennis/badminton-still a long way to go.Other sports-past glories are no longer significant. The present is what counts & in the present we have in our midst a world champion(what,if its carrom?-a sport is still a sport!)of which we have every reason to feel proud. Also present are budding champions from sports of similar nature, who are in need of all encouragement & support from the govt, sponsors & fans.So let them be given their due support & acclamation as the entire country stands to benefit from their performance.
Finally, let the sport, the player & his victories be glorified!
P.S1:Sorry,abt the lengthy posting..Jus that I have always felt indignant about the partial treatment to some less famous forms of sport & I took this opportunity to present my h.opinion on the hub.Any identifiers with me please respond.Thank you!
P.S2:Incidentally,I happen to be a cricket fanatic too!

Sirs,
My son is 13 years old and plays carrom very well. He has remained 2nd Number
Champion in Bombay for interschool
tournament and also no. 1 in our area.
All this without a coach. How do I make
him a great national player . What should be my course of action for his future life ? Where do I get him made
member? Where can he learn all the rules of the game ? We are middle class
people. Keeping that in mind. please
advise. How do I come to know where tournaments are played in India so that
I can take him there to play? From which
magazine ?
Thanking you
Krishna Kumar.
