Can we talk about the great singers of yesteryear and how different is the style of singing of their disciples? For instance, how close is Sudha Raghunathan's style to MLV's or TVS' to MM Iyers?

Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavathar is the greatest
I've known till date. His disciples include
Dr.K.J.Yesudas, Shri T.V.Gopalakrishnan, to say
nothing of Jayan & Vijayan, Kanjangad Ramachandran
and a host of other very leading singers who are
some of the foremost in the sphere today.

Semmangudi was another great one. Students like MS Subbulakshmi, Maharajapuram Santhanam, Yesudoss and so on.
Seems like his musical lineage is going to end. MS does not seem to have brought out many disciples to stage, maybe Maharajapuram Ramachandran will be the only one in the semmngudi paani.

GNB's sishya-parampara also includes Priya sisters, Charumathy Ramachandran, Kanyakumari, Radha Jayalakshmi, Embar Kannan etc. I think he had the largest sishya parampara.

D K Pattammal is from a totally different school but established her own style. The style gives importance to Sahitya and its pronunciation.
D K Jayaraman is her prime sishya who adopted the same style but with several variations. While rendering some krithis, his style is totally different from that o Pattammal.
DKJ has a lot of sishyas who are performing artists. Vijay Siva is one of them who has the same style modified to suit his voice. Balaji Shankar is another who sings in the same style.
Govindarajan is another sishya who sings exactly as DKJ used to do. Even his voice rescembles DKJ and you cannot figure out just by listening to him.

A very sad thing is MDR's disciples. He has hardly anyone, practically no one, who has really come up in the Music world. Same with Chittoor Subramania Pillai.
By the way,
go to my Carnatic Homepage. It has many pictures of old Carnatic vidwans with their disciples. The address is:

Chittor Subramanya Pillai has several disciples.
Foremost disciple of Chitoor was Madurai Somu. Among his other disciples are Dr.Lokanatha Sharma, Violinist B.K.Viswanatha Sharma, and of course his daughter Revathy Ratnaswamy .

I feel that somehow the artists of yesteryear could always produce good disciples. The top artists of the present generation somehow don't seem to have disciples of real class.I dont know whether this is due to lack of application or because there is no gurukul system as in the past.
I read in an interview of Tabla legend Kishan Maharaj where he said,"We have been too busy promoting ourselves to give real attention to our disciples. My son was really talented by I never gave him any notice.I am determined not to repeat the same mistake with my Grandsons"
Also one one must give credit to those who were not very famous artist themselves but have produced legendary disciples.Like Parur Sundaram Iyer (MSG ) , Narayan Iyer( TNK , N Rajam )etc.I would appreciate a few more names of such gurus.
Another guru-shisya pair that i would like to add is Puchi Iyengar- Ariyakudi pair.
Also I would like to know what people mean when they say that musicians like the great flute Mali were self-taught?

Suhas, S Balachandar may have cooperated with one of the Lalgudis in training B. Jayanti. Not sure who LGJ's guru was but he would certainly qualify as well. Shankarasivan/TNS is another example. Alathurs also. Concert stage fame is not a good measure for the depth of understanding and wisdom of the great gurus, almost to the contrary.
I have noticed with Mali always original ideas, if you don't yet like a raga, any raga, find an MDR or Mali rendition in it, it is likely to penetrate. Mali may also get some credit for the creative 'pause', somewhat like Chowdiah.

Dr.S Ramanathan's daughter Geetha Benett is an excellent veena player. Infact she sings playing the Veena when it comes to Ramanathan's popular songs like "Mamayoora meethile yeri caa" Also Unnikrishnan & S.P.Ram had learnt from S.Ramanathan.

Is SR also an accomplished veena player ? He appears to be a vocalist. The other students of SR are not vainikas, I think. According to Sambamurty, Tyagaraja is also supposed to have been a vainika, but this seems doubtful to me.

[Prince] Rama Varma deserves a mention -- and, as far as I'm concerned it would be a very complementary one.

As far as I know the song Mamayuramidil eri va in Bilahari is a composition of Mazhavai Chidambara Bharati.

The krithi of Dr. S. Ramanathan that his daughter Geetha Bennet "sings" while playing Veena is "Bhavapriye Bhavani" in Ragam Bhavani (available in sung version by Unnikrishnan in audio cassetes). Another song is "Va VelavA" in Sivaranjani, another one in Ragam Gopriya, which
Sowmya sings in her concerts.

Dr.SR also has tuned several Subrahmanya Bharati's songs in the original raga set by the poet himself. (For ex Chinnanjiru kiliye sung in ragamalika was originally in bhairavi). GB mentioned this once in a concert and sang "oozhikoothu".

There are a few music students who were guided by Dr. S.Ramanathan for their Ph.D thesis. One of the popular Musicologist, Vocalist and Research guide Dr. S.Bhagyalekshmy of Thiruvananthapuram belongs to the school of Dr.SR . His renedering of the composition VARALENDHUKO is a very rare item which has a great mass appeal . SRI GURUN PALI THOSMI is another lovely composition. MA MAYURA MEETHILERI VA was popularised by Late DKJ .

Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer has a long list of sishya parambara . I would like to mention that there were large number of shisyas from the State of Kerala to Sri.SSI . To name a few from the State of Kerala Prof. Mavelikara Prabhakara varma, Dr.MALINI HARIHARAN ,Sri. Kumara Kerala Varma , Smt.Palkulangara Ambika devi, Smt. G.Seethalekshmy , Sri.Pala C.K.Ramachandran are all very popular performing vocalists and Highly appreciated teachers in the field of Carnatic Music teaching . Sri. SSI always pays great respect to the Travancore Palace for their patronage to Carnatic Music and he always praised the sincere efforts of the Kerala Sishyas particularly in keeping and maintianing the SSI Bhani . Dr. Malini Hariharan who had learned from Sri. SSI is presently officiating as the Head of the Department of Music in the Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit, Kalady .

I AM SURPRISED NO ONE HAS SPOKEN ABOUT LALGUDIS SHISHYA PARAMPARA, I MEAN THE VOCALISTS. IS NOT BOMBAY JAYASHREE ONE OF THE BRIGHTEST SINGERS OF THE PRESENT GENERATION? CAN ANY BODY TELL ME WHICH BANI DOES SHE FOLLOW?
