This concept seems to abound in recent Carnatic music. Why ? Is it a freak show ? How many go on to be 'great' ? Who are some of these ? What does it say about 'manodharma' ? Should it be encouraged or discouraged ? A real early example was Maha Vaidyanath Iyer.

I can only say that Ravikiran must be a much nicer adult that he was a child, then!
When I met him he seemed a very modest and unassuming person.

Aaahh, yes, that is true, Nick, but he is also no longer prodigal !

This is a very compelling definition but it also brings in the element of chance.
How will the infants excellence be recognized and nurtured ?

Has anyone heard of Abishek Raghuram, he comes from the family of Palghat Raghu but has gone to becoome a vocalist. He was initially initiated into Mridangam by his thatha. He used to accompany his thatha to all kutcheris and when he came back he used to sing whatever he heard without any formal lessons. He was then put on formal vocal training and has been slowly allowed to perform for the last 2 years. He has been an absolute stunner whenever he has performed and has an excellent Gnanam.

Abishek is about 12 - 14 years old. He was in the US last year and did a few concerts there too.

i heard that once ravishankar said " if there is somebody who doubts the presence of god and reincarnation, let him look at ravikiran"
if ravikiran isn't a prodigy, who is?

RaviKiran WAS a child prodigy. I am very curious what the circumstances were that led RaviShankar to say this, if you know ? Did he attend one of the raaga identification shows ?
Has RaviKiran realised all the 'prodigal' talent of his infancy ? The mellow sound of the Gottuvadyam and his own soft/gentle playing may have contributed to some recent obscurity.

What happened to Shankaran Namboodiri? He was also called as a child with a gifted voice iirc. I have seen only a few of his commercial releases.
