Please let me know if there are any M.D.Ramanathan fans out there. I am one. I have some live concert recordings of his and enjoy listening to his vilamba kaala renditions of some of the songs. Best ones include Bhairavi swarajathi, Ananda natana prakAsam in kEdaram, O jagadambha in Ananda bhairavi and bhajarE rE chitha in kalyani.
If anyone has live concert recordings of his, please let me know.

I have a few concert recording excerpts by MDR: unfortunately no full concerts. But I really like his style of singing and depth of rendition. If someone has complete concert recordings of MDR, please contact me.

I have many concert tapes of MDR, all that are live kutcheris. I was looking for a MDR concert with Pazhani Subramanium Pillai, my guru's guru.

I am a fan of MDR too. In addition to recordings
available commercially, I have one concert recording where he has rendered amongst others
vathapi, nagumomu, brochevarevarura ?, kaddanu'variki
The recording is not very good but I would be happy to get some more !

I am a major fan of MDR too!!!! I like the depth of his music, and particularly his innovation.
I have a few audio tapes, but they are of poor sound quality.

I read somewhere that MDR had a strong connection to Kalakshetra. It seems likely that the classical dance elements may have contributed to his unique style. I can't think of other stalwarts with similar background. Maybe flute Mali ? Any ideas ?
I understand OST's daughter Aparna Thiagarajan has some dance training and is now a vocalist. I remember her singing the rare Vivardhani kriti 'Manasa manasa' of Tyagaraja.

I'm sorry Laxman. Somehow it slipped my mind to respond to that post.
Sorry I don't have any information about MDR's composition. I'll be going to India in April and I'll most certainly look for it.

I have a book by Gowri Kuppuswamy where she has listed MDR's songs and the source is her private collection, which means someone from MDR's family passed these on to her. Do you have any contact with Gowri Kuppuswamy at all?

Huge fan.
I have many concert tapes though not all of them
are beginning to ending. Around 10-12 90 minute tapes totally + all available pre-recorded cassetes. Recordings are not very good, though I am all too willing to ignore that fact.
For those living in the USA, there is a video cassette available from a shop in Van Nuys California. It is a 1 hour recording of a house concert in Madras in 1977 taped by Dr. Amy Catlin, a ethnomusicologist in UCLA. Is a must see for all fans. Hah, I just found the whole address:
Apsara Media
13659 Victory Boulevard Suite 577
Van Nuys, CA 91401
and it costs $50 including shipping.
chidu...

Can you post a list of the raagas/krities in your MDR tapes ? Thanks
Watching MDR for an hour is a less appealing proposition, even if you are helped by the fact that recording clarity a quarter century ago was poorer ! 50$ for this doesn't seem right especially since MDR or his folks probably dont get a penny !!!

I feel $ 50 would have been fine if it was a full live concert. He is accompanied by Lalgudi and Sivaraman.

Are the Bhairavi swarajathis of MDR referred to in the thread different? I would really like to get a hold of the concerts with that.. how long is the swarajathi?
There is also one amazing Diwakara Tanujam of his that I heard..

There is an MDR tape which has among others the Bhairavi varnam Viriboni. This should not, however, be confused with the Bhairavi SwaraJathi. This tape also has an RTP in SankaraB, Vinave Panchanaadhisha.

I came in here after a long time and saw your question to me on Mar 17. I have to check with my source on the contents of that tape. Will share with you any info I get.

Chidambaram:
Did you buy it in mail order? I tried to find their phone number so i can do a phone order, but couldnt get it anywhere on net. I even mailed to Dr.Amy Catlin twice, but could not elicit a reply. Is the video worth buying? Any comments on contents of video? And howlong does it take to process the order. I wouldnt mind $50 for an MDR tape esp when available, (coz our own tyrants like AIR have presumably not made commercially available several tapes of such eminent musicians). Ramji, pls do share the info. Would be helpful to MDR fans like me. Thanks!

I just came across the forumhub site and read your posting on MDR
recordings. I am a fan of TR Mahalingam and MDR (as you know, their
styles are somewhat similar, even considering that one was a flutist
and the other a vocalist). I can play the flute somewhat and my
teacher, TS Sankaran, has often told me that Mahalingam was a very
great admirer of MDR. Supposedly, in the 1960s or so, there was a
concert of MDR which Sankaran and Mali attended in Bangalore. At
the end of the concert, the sabha secretary praised the concert,
and said that MDR was "among the best JUNIOR vocalists today" or
words to that effect. This was meant to be a genuine compliment to
MDR, but Mali (being Mali), did not think this did justice to MDR.
According to Sankaran, he walked up to the stage, took the mike and
said that MDR was among the "best vocalists today", junior OR
senior! :)
I have a few MDR recordings, one of which is an unforgettable
concert -- starts with "Giriraja Sutha Thanaya" and also has a
Begada, a Thodi and so on. If anybody has any other recordings,
I would really like to hear from them.
Thanks,
Venkat.

venkat,
are you based in the US or India?
i am interested in tapes of MDR - but i do not have
any MDR tapes at present. i have rare recordings of other
musicians like TK Rangachari, etc.
the most unforgettable thing about MDR is his
voice - i honestly feel that if God were to have
a voice, it would sound like MDRs.
come to think of it, in those days of poor
recording quality, his voice sounds so divine,
if he were alive today, his would have been the voice of
a generation!!
Semmangudi is supposed to have said that MDR was
indeed a kAlapuruShA.
thanks,
ravi.
