Hi folks,
Any one who has listened to music in the 60s and
the 70s would certainly not forget a musician
called Sri T.K.Rangachari.
I have a couple of tapes of his procured from his
family. Listening to them, is sheer bliss.
He was indeed a musical genius. His raga expositions
were so novel and captivating that one can not
but feel amazed at his vidvat.
It would certainly be interesting to know if any
of you out there has heard him.
Thanks,
Ravi.

Dear Ravikiran,
I must agree with you that T.K.Rangachari is one of the greatest carnatic vocalist of all-times. Though I never have or will be able to get a chance to listen to him live in concert, I have heard a recording of his with Lalgudi and Mani Iyer, at a friends house. What a team, T.K.Rangachari, Lalgudi and Mani Iyer!

Rohan, It is possible that you are one of the greatest carnatic fans of all-times :-)). What were the raagas/krities rendered by TKR in this tape ? I think he had a special place for YadukulaKamboji.

Here is some info on T.K.Rangachary and Voleti Venkateshvarulu.

Later he studied under Dr.Sripada Pinakapani. He worked as a producer for AIR for over 30 years and also gave concerts. He had a rich, deep and vibrant voice. Thanks Lakshman....Are there any Voleti tapes/recordings available ? I'm sure they will be in India, but what about on the net?
Also were these artists distinctly popular for something? Say, pallavis or raagam-singing etc?
thanks

Another less well known chap is SandhyavandanaSrinivasaRao, I heard him do a fine job with Ethavunanerchitivo, NePogadakunte,Melukovayya and a few others. Also RK Srikantan. These may actually be musicians musicians.
SRJanakiRaman said he was a student of Tiger Varadachari. He is pretty old but the flame is still there. Any info. on him is appreciated.

Nandini:
I do have a concert recording of Voleti. But I don't know what his forte was. Commercial recordings of his must be quite uncommon.
Nado: I also have the same recording of Sandhyavandanam Shrinivasa Rao that you mentioned about. Again he was not a prominent artist. I will try to find some info on SRJ. From what I know he is more of a musicologist like S.Ramanathan than a concert artist.

Dear Nadopasaka,
Thanks for the compliment! I donnot remember what songs TKR sang, since it was about four years back (and I am 12)! I do remember he sang Thodi as the main. I also remember that Mani Iyer received numerous applause throughout the concert.

Rohan, It is indeed a pleasure to feel the excitement of CM in our younger colleagues. Todi (one of the truly Carnatic sounds ) is just the kind of raaga to stick in your experience, even if you were only 8 at the time !! Amazing ! These sounds are inscribed deep in the subconscious and response to them really knows no age limitation. I hope you listen widely and wisely. I look forward to your ideas and observations on the threads here. My best wishes.

Glad this topic's come up. I've been trying to find TK Rangachari's concerts ever since I heard the only one I've got.. In case anyone's interested, that one started out with some ragam that has a shankarabharanam arohanam, and a mohanam avarohanam.. and an amazing abhogi, and another I don't know the name of.. Manirangu, only the ga is in the arohanam also.. and a superb shubhapanthuvarali (sri satyanarayanam), and kalyani main.. I believe that concert is commonly available.
But I've been trying to get anything of his, at any cost. Please contact me.

That concert u heard started with the song Ananda sagara
in raga garudadhwani a favourite of my grandfather.Have u heard his tatvameruga tarama in
the same raga. The swara patterns he weaves with garudadhwani
is simply simply superb. And the other song u heard was Ika naina nain Raga pushpalatika

Nandini,
Voleti had a deep voice, and he would produce it without much effort or body movements, in fact he would barely appear to open his mouth while singing, though he had a habit for "mooku-podi". His pace was always unhurried. I have an AIR recording of his with Vidulaku Mrokkeda, Nadasudharasam and Dasarathi Ni Runamu (incomplete). There's a TTD release of Annamacharya Kritis by him at http://www.tirupati.org/ttda_svrec_annamaaudio_p7.htm
Nadopasaka,
I like the term "musicians' musician" for these artistes.

Can i obtain a copy from you.
Please post.

I have listened to Voleti a few times, several years ago, in Trivandrum. A rich, deep voice, seemingly effortlessly produced... combined with a style of rendering that reflected deep understanding of the saahityam, made his concerts an unforgettable experience. Wish more collections of his concerts were available. And yes.. as Upendra mentioned, he had a "mooku-podi" affliction!!! :-)))

on: Wed Jun 7 22:52:06 EDT 2000
Just to clarify , is 'mooku-podi' related to what is known as 'snuff' or is it some more potent 'nose-candy' ?? Somehow, the voices of today ( well, most of them ) lack the gravity of the past generation. I suspect the microphone/amplifier has a role to play in this. It is also possible that violin accompaniment is more tonally aggressive.

Palghat mani Iyer is certain that the michrophone /amplifier has got something t do with this.Infact I have heard that oward the later half of hios life he strictly refused to do mike-concerts.
Bye

I have enjoyed Carnatic Music as a 'lay' rasika for almost 60 years and have collected several cassetes, available commercially. I had listened to live concerts of Sembai as well TKRangachari in late 50's before I moved to the US. I would very much like to get concert tapes of TKR, Sembai
and other old timers like GNB. Suggest any source, please. Thanks.

Hi:
I too am interested in Voleti's tapes. Anything is good. I have heard at a friend's place and he is very protective of sharing his music with others. So I have do not have any.
Please respond.
Thanks

There's a release of TKR's live concert/songs by media dreams, a new company in chennai. In fact, I saw the ad and asked who TKR was in another thread (since I'd never heard of him before). Glad to know the details from here.
Incidentally, I'm visiting India (Madras, Bangalore, other parts of TN) in March & April. What sources for carnatic music (shops, individuals who have rare recordings they're willing to make copies of) do you recommend I check out? Are AIR's archives open to the public - will they let me make/sell copies of concerts in their archives? thanks for your help.

Laksmanan,
I have a set which has the same set of songs right till "Illalo Pranathathi".In addition,my set continues with a amazing rendering of "Thatwamerugha Tharama" in Garudadhwani. He is accompanied by MSG ,and Swaraprasthara portion is pure bliss.I wonder if this is the same concert you are mentioning.
In any case I am willing to help anyone add this to his collection.
I would love to add to my own as well.
You could check up with me for Voletis concerts also.Four in all (accompanied by Msg in three and by Lalgudi in one)

Just give me some time and I shall have access to aleast 10-15 concerts of TKR.What I have presently is a concert recording with an RTP in Amritavarshini/Aanandabhairavi.That is excellent.
