Hindustani music history help

Hi, I'm looking for information on Hindustani music. Specifically how it has helped to merge cultures together, using bits and pieces from each culture. Also, I need to know how the sitar fits into Indian/Hindu culture. This is pretty urgent, as I've procrastinated. Ha ha. I've you've got any knowledge in this area, I would LOVE to hear from you.   Please check out a book by Dr.Emme te Nijenhuis titled Indian Music-History & Structure. It is published by E.J.Brill, Koln. It might be obtained through a public library.
