Hi all
I want to start\restart a line on Arunachala Kavirayar (AK). Here are the leads:
1. anybody aware of complete, sequential rendering of ramanatakam instead of non-sequential, tukkada collections?
2. what are his other works?
3. His inspirations, history of his creativity, tutelage, sishya parampara.......
thanks,
gopal

Sreeram: The list I posted ws from a particular book. I do have Yaro ivar yaro in Bhairavi listed from another book and is the raga that most people use to sing it today. It has also been sung in Hamsadhavani by H.Ramakrishnan on Sangeetha cassette # 6ECDB 548.
The other song Kanden kanden sitaiyai is listed in Mukhari from another book. Maybe in the Sangita ramayanam the beginning words are different?

Lakshman,
'kaNdEn' should follow the song 'dhikku dhikkA' in Ahiri in your book , according to the story sequence.
Sriram,
It is difficult to say when these ragas got changed.
For some it is known. e.g.
While the original 'kandEn' was in mukAri, it was sung widely in Vasantha. Later on D.K.Jayaraman has sung it in Behag and Lalgudi Jayaraman tuned it in BagEsrI. ( I remember a discussion in a usenet thread on music about the suitability of the various ragas for this classic song .)
Similarly the ragas set by Ariyakkudi are also generally known and popularised by his disciples.

Pasupathy: Unfortunately I don't have the book with me. Someone had lent it to me earlier and I just copied down the song details. I might have missed it though. Thanks.

Gopal: ramanukku mannan mudi is typically sung in hindOLam. I have albums of TVS, TNS, and Bombay Sisters singing this. One of my earliest memories of tamil movies is hearing bhAnumati sing this in some movie - paththu mAtha bandham I believe.
BTW, you've inspired me to take a leaf out of your book. I'm going to sift thru' my tapes and create my own cd's of AK songs. This'll be a challenge since I've never done this before.
All: Let me know the albums which contain AK songs. Apart from the TNS & Bombay sisters AK songs albums, I have the following - listener's choice Bombay Jaishree (kandEn kandEn), mahArAjapuram santhAnam (antha rAma soundharyam, rAmanaik kaNNArak kandAnE), TVS (rAmanukku mannan mudi), Sudha R/NCV/Sowmya (En paLLI kondeer aiyya), MSS (yArO ivar yArO, vittuvidada seethaiyai, enakkun irupatham). Any others?

That would be great KK. good try.ON my part I am planning over the weekend to make a good photocopy of all the 200 and odd (numbered from Lakshman's list) songs and keep a template. If any of the people in US and Europe want to have a copy, I would mail the photocopies. If anybody volunteers from India, I can send them a copy of template so that they can distribute copies of any songs to people in India and other parts of Asia. Any takers?
I will inform all once I make the master template.
I am also attempting to create pdf files of the pages in a geocities or similar websites, but that would be a long term project if I am doing it alone...

From Sowmya's colln.
1. Kaanavendum laksham kangal
2. Ramanai kannaarak kandaane.. Let me know how and when you want them.
A correction for my previous definition:
Tibathai means a couplet or two-unit metre.usuallly not in a keerthani format (No Pall-anupallavi- charanam) but set to kannigal (eg. paraparakkanigal by thayumanavar). Sorry for the lapse on my part. Definition of Tharu stands good as something set to keerthanai format, fit to be sung as a background or by the part, set to tune(in this case, a raagam), in a dance-drama etc. This is an ancient format of musical in a dance-drama...

From the Hindu Jan 5, 2001:
Focus on Arunachalakavi
The morning session of December 23 (at the Music Academy) began with the rendering of compositions of Papanasam Sivan by Nathamuni Bhajan Sangh Group. Under the Nachimuthu
Gounder Rukmini Ammal Trust endowment, Smt. Gomathi Vishwanathan, Member of the Advisory Council, presented a lec-dem on Sirkazhi Moovar with the focus on Arunachalakavi. The speaker was assisted by Smt. Sushila Raman, Neeraja Tulasinath and B. Balakrishnan in vocal support.
The speaker said that the songs of Arunachalakavi do not have original Varnamettu; the ragas, as found in different existing musical versions of these compositions suit the different moods of the compositions. The speaker traced the period of Kavirayar (1711-1788), his early life, and other works; it was mentioned that this composer had
composed 278 viruttams, 197 darus (song- composition), set in madhyamakala, with different tala structures. The usage of ``Edugai and Monai'' for embellishing the ragas are found in all the works of Arunachalakavi. According to musical format of operas, the first and last daru are set in the same raga. Gomathi Vishwanathan said that Rama Natakam of Arunachalakavi is a forerunner to several other works of similar nature and structure. The musical forms found in this work (Dwipadai, Daru, Venba, Todayam, etc.) were mentioned. The different ragas employed were suitably illustrated.Dr. S.A.K. Durga and B.M. Sundaram presented their comments. R. Vedavalli while complimenting the speaker said that the composition `Yaro Ivar Yaro'is to be sung as ``Aaro Ivar Aaro'' and in Saveri. She pointed out the usage of proverbs, colloquial language, etc. noted in this work.

As one who was present during the discussions on 23rd at Music Academy, I also remember another important issue that came up about 'Yaro Ivar Yaro' that day - Whose utterances are these -Sri Rama or Sita? Though the tradition has it that it is Rama who sings this, an equally good number of musicians and Tamil enthusiasts opine that these are Sita's words indeed. A lively discussion on this is going on in the egroup agathiyar.

I am not sure of the legality of distributing the photocopies of RNK amongst the list members? If i do so, am i impinging on copyright of the publishers?Isnt the copyright restricted to resale of the photocopies or any ther copies alone?? Any rational suggestions to distribute the copies of AK's songs???

I got a copy of Tirunalaipovar (nandanar charithiram) written in mid 19th century by Gopalakrishna Bharatiyar(GB).Though I havent studied it much, preliminary reading gave me an impression that its language and keerthanam structure are parallel to RNK. I would like to know more if anybody has done a comparison. I also got a copy of NC where many keerthanams are given with swarams and instructions for rendering as would be in a musical text book. I havent heard of similar anthology of RNK. If i am wrong, i am just willing to be corrected.
