Please let me know if there are any M.D.Ramanathan fans out there. I am one. I have some live concert recordings of his and enjoy listening to his vilamba kaala renditions of some of the songs. Best ones include Bhairavi swarajathi, Ananda natana prakAsam in kEdaram, O jagadambha in Ananda bhairavi and bhajarE rE chitha in kalyani.
If anyone has live concert recordings of his, please let me know.

venkat,
are you based in the US or India?
i am interested in tapes of MDR - but i do not have
any MDR tapes at present. i have rare recordings of other
musicians like TK Rangachari, etc.
the most unforgettable thing about MDR is his
voice - i honestly feel that if God were to have
a voice, it would sound like MDRs.
come to think of it, in those days of poor
recording quality, his voice sounds so divine,
if he were alive today, his would have been the voice of
a generation!!
Semmangudi is supposed to have said that MDR was
indeed a kAlapuruShA.
thanks,
ravi.

Click hard, you are making several copies !!
This triplicate filing reminds me of recent tax forms, one for Feds., one for state and one copy for yourself. :-))
MDR's ideas and imagination are as unique, if not more so than just his voice. They found a convenient medium for expression in his unusual voice.
The tinny-voiced 'so-called multi-octave' experts of today, who rely on 'mikes' , false throats and nasal whispers cannot even begin to duplicate the powerful 'Naadam' emanating from the depths of MDR's naabhi. It can rightly be called 'GajaVadana' at its massive and majestic trumpeting height. BhimsenJoshi may be another good example of the very few who have such a rich sound.

Somebody in this thread wanted a review of MDRs video tape. here is the list of contents:
Its called "South Indian Classical Music: House concert with MDR". There 7 kritis in following order: Valachi vachi (varnam), budham asrayami (natakurunji), ni daya ravalegaka (Thodi), Triloka mata (Paras), Ramakatha sudha (Madhyamavathi), Birana brova (Kalyani), Tillana (Kathanakuthuhalam, composer: MDR).
Video quality of tape is excellent. Audio is just so-so (may be its my tv) you can hear/see MDR talking to audience in tamil between the kritis "What do you want? if you have something in mind tell me" with a smile. Violin by TNKrishnan, Mrdangam by Umayalpuram Sivaraman. It costs $50 incl. S&H, which is probably a bit high, but if you can afford it, i think its worth it. And in the days when getting MDR audio tape is difficult, this probably will be a welcome collection. I recd the tape within 10 days, so they are pretty fast in shipping.

KDR, can you perhaps post the details of this MDR collection ? Thanks. I have managed to hear, over the years, Bhajare re chita , Kshinamai, Begada RTP , a MMVati using Tygs. LokaavanaChatura as Pallavi, Dorakuna (Bilahari) from a concert at Kalakshetram in addition to the Music academy 2 tape release ( Vaatapi , S'bharana RTP etc. ).

bharath.com has a good collection of MDR.
The Viribhoni, Vaatapi ganapthim, and Maha Ganapathim are just awesome.
Mani Iyer on the Mridangam makes it more enthralling...
