By rare ragas I mean seldom used ragas like soorya, rasikapriya and other ragas like
Poornashadjam that are generally known only
through famous compositions.
First of all, why are these ragas "rare"? I'm
interested in a list compositions based on
such rare ragas and references to rendering of
these ragas.

I totally agree !
Maybe you could put all compositions of any one or two ragas each day, to ease logistics (just my opinion). Perhaps , if possible some sense of what each might be like, since it seems we are destined never to hear most of them.

I don't know about you all, but anything that I post here needs to be typed by me. I have not found a way to attach files (as one does with email) to a messgae posted on the thread. Is there such a thing? It would make it easier.

nado:
Why is the 'swarajathi', especially kamaakshi and maybe a couple of others so exalted ? Shouldn't it be 'easier' to digest no offense, nandini ?
>>none taken! i think i agree with isairasigai on this.......it could have been taught in a month.....but my teacher stuck with just one line for nearly 3/4 classes.....
And this really helps in grasping the song as well as the raagam it is in.

I believe Sambamurty suggests that the 'svarajati' borrows elements from dance. Can these be related to 'nadai' or gait. Is MDR's style related to this dance background ?
Lakshman thanks for the Begada, now I can properly sing along with KVN !
Although we all bask happily in the glow of the great vaggeyakaras, new prayogas and sangatis of modern composers and their own musical originality is revealed when you can roll the words around for yourself. If I am not mistaken, there is a nice poetic touch by RShivan too, 'glance at me out of the corner of your eye...= kadaikkan..' Those who know please correct.

How is Bhanduvarali different from Panthuvarali? Any ideas?
- From: Nadopasaka (@ ahppp36.buffnet.net)

It appears that one condition of rarity of a raga is that there is only one kriti in it.
Is there any such where two composers have kritis in the same rare raga ? alternately, is there a rare raga with two or more kritis by the same composer, maybe due to different talams ?

isai rasigai:
Bandhuvarali is a janya of mela 45 (Shubhapantuvarali) and the scale is: S M2 S N3 D1 P M2; D1 M2 G2 R1 S.
Nadopasaka:
C.S.Shivaramakrishna Bhagavatar has composed a second kriti in the raga Bhagavatapriya. Sada hanuma dashritam in Adi tala.
Here is another short list of kritis in rare ragas.

Thanks Lakshman
No doubt CSS Bhagavatar liked Bhagavatapriya ! Is there a raga called ShubhaBandhuvarali ? Based on your complete lists, are the rare ragas generally grouped in the 1-36 suddha ma melas ? Doesn't seem like it from the ones you have posted so far ?
Thanks again.
- From: Lakshman (@ hse-kit-ppp38861.sympatico.ca)

Nadopasaka:
There is no raga called Shubhabsndhuvarali, at least not that I know of.
Of the 32800 odd total entries 6880 are mela raga kritis, 230 are kritis for which the raga janya is not known. an overwhelming 22100 kritis are janyas of the first 36 melas and only about 6880 are from the pratimadhyama melas.

Lakshman
That is the most important statistic I have heard this week next to the Dow and Nasdaq !!!
Is there a historical record , I mean, if this question was asked a 100 years ago etc. how would the numbers differ ?
It seems like the suddha-ma melas hold a timeless fascination.

IsaiRasigai
Is that a Chakravakam (m16) type sound or closer to Valaji for ( j16) Bhujangini ?
If it has fewer swaras, it may actually not even be close to m16. Please clarify, Thanks

Nado - it sounds closer to Chakravaaham - I have a recording of Shri TMT - would confirm Aaro-Avaro this evening. My understanding is it takes all(if not most notes) of Chakravaaham but may be in a vakra manner - would confirm tonight

Just remembered a Ramapriya (pratima Chvkm ) kriti I heard, very good Korina Vara of PattinamSI. Chakravakam janyas like Valaji and Malayamarutam are quite unique and catchy.

Speaking of pratimadhyama ragas, Shuddhadhanyasi is very popular but its pratimadhyama counterpart Vandanadharini is just as melodious and pleasing but is rarely performed.

Lakshman, This one puzzles me (SD and prt ma Vnddhni). Do janya ragas also submit to reflection across madhyama ? ( now that you mention it, doesn't seem like a problem )
Are there some more examples ? Ill try to work with Hamsadhwani and see what happens .
