Nadopasaka:
>>>In some sense MDR and SSI's approaches mirror those of Tyagaraja and MD respectively.<<<
I couldn't agree with you more. This may also explain why MDR has a greater penchant for Tyagaraja's compositions and SSI for MD's.

This may be a digression but I find the use of the phrase 'p m g m r' in several different raagas, (especially melas that is) used by different performers as well in their neravals etc. 'm g m r' in the Alathur brothers terrific 'Ninuvina ga ma ri' or 'pmgmr badari vanamuula' in Brinda-Multas Akshayalinga.
What are others like this, perhaps even those favored or popularised by SSI ?
'ni dha ni pa' is another. Of course the pauses-extensions etc. between the notes create infinite phrases.

Does anyone know the format in which Janani ninuvina is sung? SSI's version seems to have missed a major version of the charanam acc to the lyrics given in the site below.

Are there any other auido files out there for comparison's sake?

Although I have a fairly good collection of SSI tapes, I have heard him sing very few kritis in Bhairavi. (Three at last count-Janani maamava, Kaamaakshi and Enaatimomu phalamu). If anyone has other renderings, please get in touch with me.

The site mentioned above (royal carpet ?? ) has a few other errors e.g. Vira hanumate is listed under Tyagaraja as a Kaanada kriti when it should be Karnataka Kapi under MD. I think they did not consult Lakshman, even though they mention him in the acknowledgments.

Mr. Shyam: Semmangudi has sung 'srithakamala kucha' a Jayadeva ashtapathi in Bairavi; By the way he has himself tuned it to Bairavi.
He has also sung RTP's in Bairavi on no. of occasions.
I have the Ashtapathi bairavi with me.

"enaati nomuphalamo", i think, was popularised by SSI.
his neraval for "sundaresha suguna brunda...." is really moving.('divine unison')

Ravi: I thought Enaati nomuphalamo was popularized more by MSS than by SSI although the former might have learnt it from the latter. I have heard MSS sing it on a few occasions. In fact, I have her rendition of this kriti on tape. I have heard SSI sing it only on one occasion, i.e., the Divine Unison recording.

I doubt there is a RakshaBettare rendition or even the Kmlmba Nvvrna one, by SSI.
This discussion on repertoire of krities in a raaga suggests that the number of krities in major raagas by the important composers reflects the number of immediate students they might have had. The composer catering to the student and his vocal etc. equipment-preferences was most recently exhibited by PatnamSI. The Anandabhairavis of Syamasastri notwithstanding, this might mean that the krities were not always driven by a personal dialogue with the deity.

nado: could you please elaborate on the PatnamSI incident that you are referring about...
- From: Nadopasaka (@ ahppp20.buffnet.net)
on: Thu Aug 31 13:07:33 EDT 2000
Well, RaviKiran it's not a particular incident but historically his students would 'deliberately' commit mistakes and PSI would quite patiently spend hours correcting them. Of course the students were doing this just to hear PSI.
Incidentally, that was itself a fine review of the ShreeKanthan concert.

Is there any Ksetragana padam rendered by MDR (or for that matter by SSI ) ? The vilambita kaala of these might especially suit MDR, who has a way of caressing each note as if it were a beloved offspring.

>>>MDR, who has a way of caressing each note as if it were a beloved offspring.<<< very well put indeed. I have a beautiful navaroj padam - one in a concert, and one in an informal singing session, where he explains the meaning ( as he sings ! )

i have an SSI concert w/ RTP in Simhendramadhyamam. no krithis, though. the first five krithis in this concert are in the pancharatna ragas. i don't remember the rest off-hand.

Prashant: The concert you are refering to has RTP in Keeravani and not Simmendra Madhyamam, Please check again.
Ramanathan: I have a concert where MDR has sung Nathajana paripalaya without Ragam and swaram just the kriti is rendered.
I have heard that there is a 78 RPM of Semmangudi with the same kriti.

since navaratri is here - i guess we owe it to iyerVAL and HMB for 'polishing' the nine gems of swati tirunal.
my favorite is the bhairavi and natakuranji.
has any one heard kvn's pataantharam of the natakuranji krithi - it is very different form the way the rest of them sing it. he sings it in triputa taalam while popularly it is in misra chaapu.

I believe, before SSI-HMB, Parameswara Bhagavatar has a significant role in the legend of Swati Tirunal.

I'm looking for the complete tapes of the following two SSI concerts. My copies of both these are either incomplete or corrupted.
1) SSI with Lalgudi & Trichy Sankaran (held in the vicinity of an airport, the concert is punctuated by the roar of flights taking off!)
Contents: Vallabha Nayakasya, Srikantha, Dinamani Vamsa, etc.
2) SSI with TNK & Sivaraman (Bombay 1974)
Contents: Devadeva, Enduku Needaya, Siva Siva Siva, Mahalakshmee, etc.
Thanks in advance!

I came across an article about an SSI concert in 1998, (in Madras I believe) where BMK has accompanied him on viola. Does anybody have a recording or more details on this??
