Is there some code of conduct for kutcheries ?
The 'bhajana' goshti's of yore involved some kind of audience sing-along. Can the artistes walk around , talk or fixate on anyone in the audience ? Must they always face the audience. How much license does manodharma permit ?

While we continue to investigate the 'extreme' forms of kutchery practise, I would like to understand how kutchery times and time slots are related to presentations. Are there kutcheries beginning at midnight, like MidnightMadness hoops ? Raaga time relation may or may not be relevant. Does there have to be lighting ? Thanks.

I have noticed some violinists (Papa V. for e.g. ) who pluck the string after essaying a phrase during alaapana/tani. Any ideas on this habit ?

More questions, unfortunately. Can you hold the veena upright or even tilted like a sitar, while playing ? Does this change resonance effects ?
Also, is it me or is there a strong tendency for the veena to played more by women nowadays. I could only think of AnanthaPadmanabhan off hand.
The current standard veena position doesn't seem 'ergonomic', to say the least. Of course this is only one reason I did not choose to become a 'vainika'. Maybe only the ladies have the patience to undergo this contorted posture for long hours. Thanks for comments.

Hmmm... this thread has been dormant for a while inspite of the pressing nature of the questions.
OK.. what are the concert fees charged by the various top artistes ? How do these differ between different cities and different continents ??
As the Cleveland Aradhana nears, the 'professionals' should be getting sensitive to such questions and the exchange rate.

Nado:
Concert fees depends on the type of concert/ Place of concert and time of concert.
Usually a Sabha concert in Madras is the "cheapest", the remuneration paid is much less than the Auto/Taxi fare.
Next comes the Sabha Concerts Outside Madras.
They pay reasonably well (including train fare etc).
Next comes the Marriage concerts. This is the main place where vidhwans win their "bread" (or idly or dosai or whatever)
Next comes outstation Marriage concerts. These are rare but a bounty...
Overseas concerts are at the top. They pay very well and find a prominent place in the artist's bio-data.....

:::)))) Narayanan - you seem to have been very modest in portraying the "real" demands made by some vidhwans - people are more than willing to provide decent accomodation and food for vidhwans - but there are enuf number of vidwans that give a hard time to their hosts (or the SAbha) people about food and ......
we used to host a lot of vidhwans and have exp. this first hand :::)))) right Narayanan???? :::)))

Nado - Hi :::)))
>>I have noticed some violinists (Papa V. for e.g. ) who pluck the string after essaying a phrase during alaapana/tani. Any
ideas on this habit ?<<<<
I think it is a style of playing... even today you could see Kunnakkudi Vaidhyanathanand the MSG/MS Anantharaman and sons do that......
>Can you hold the veena upright or even tilted like a sitar, while playing ? Does this change
resonance effects ? <<
Nado, Veena is a reasonably heavy instrument.... Holding it upright is not the most convenient posture... But I could think of Subbarama Iyer (Kaaraikkudi Saambasiva Iyer's brother - Karaikudi brothers fame) holding the veena upright and playing.... I do not think this would change the resonance effects....Excuse me for saying this, but S. Balachandar does tilt the Veena a little while playing mainly because he tries to play say nishadam in the rishabam sthaanam by pulling the string on the rishaba sthaanam - while doing this he tends to tilt the veena and you are better off not watching his facial expression then..... :::))
>>>>>Of course this is only one reason I did not
choose to become a 'vainika'<<<<
::::))) sure, I guessed that long back :::))))
>>>Maybe only the ladies have the patience to undergo this contorted posture for long hours.<<<<
Number one, the posture is not inconvenient and number two, there have been enuf number of male veena players... you do not feel the weight of the veena as you rest the kudam on the floor :::)))

Hi Isrsgi :-))) Good to hear from you.
>> enuf number of male veena players <<
I agree for yesteryears, also a little of SBalachander went a long way, but I dont mind him. I heard a tape of him in a practise session, long Chakravaakam, Begada etc. alaapanas only, many interesting ideas.
I meant the recent crop of vainikas. Who are the younger important male vainikas, compared to say Jayanti, Gayatri, GeetaB. etc.

Just for trivia: the habit of plucking the violin string is known as "pizzicato" in western musical terminology

I was listening to Trichur Ramachandran over the week end and found that his "Layam" is not that impressive. He "Runs" a bit too much. Any comments ?

narayanan: I have noticed this "Ottam" and "Izhuthal" in Kaala Pramaanam when Priya sisters first started off (Valarum Kalainger show - HariPriya even played the Mandolin) - but now they are singing muchhhhhh better....
I have not noticed this in Trichur VR.... Would listen some more :) (Not that my Kaalapramaanam is perfect !!!! ::::))))
Is it more to do with that school of music? Is it because they star off a song in really fast tempo and are probably not able to keep up with that tempo as they progress along with the "Bhava" factor involved?

I have noticed Priya Sisters do that.
I think they sing much much better nowadays (more mature). I have noticed the same thing with Unni. He "runs" a lot. KJY is another good example (if one can accept him as a "classical" vocalist). He is the direct competitor for Trichur Ramachandran in this regard. :-)))

Narayanan - I am really surprised to find Trichur VR in this list - would listen to some more of his concerts - which is probably the "real" indicator - not CD's :)

I have listened to many of his concerts (live) and always thought about this... as you say CDs are not the real indicator. I was present at the recording studio when KJY was recording an album. It took more than 3 hours to record one krithi (4 mts). :--))

Narayanan, I had never heard of this method. Was there someone yelling 'Cut' every now and then ? Wonder how long the Bhajare-Kalyani must have taken ??

:-))
At the recording the same krithi was repeated atleast 100 times. Some fault was found in each of them and the final recording seemed to be okay but for a slight hitch in the "eduppu". The recording engineer (i think he is related to Dr S Ramanathan) asked the tampura player to play tampura for a few seconds, recorded just the tampura tune and inserted this piece in between in the charanam so that the "eduppu" would look alright...

This should give pause to the starlets who are contemplating 'Music Videos'. Maybe they can overlay the accompaniments also. Unbelievable stuff ! What was the kriti , if you remember ?
