It will be nice for us all to discuss the various Carnatic concerts we attend during the year. I feel that it's a good idea to categorise this by year, starting with 1998, so that we can keep track of what, who saw in which year.

Chandra, NatyaShastra is dated variously as 100 BC or 100 AD. Natyasutras are probably older. Ancient Tamil treatises can certainly be older, too.
Maybe you can post a review of the TNS 'Isai' concert in Atlanta that you mentioned on these threads, like the one in SanFran reviewed by Ashok above. TNS has waxed and waned in his other concerts in the US this year.

Ghanesun,
Iyyo/Ayya intha vilayaattukku naan varavillai..!
My simple statement that 'Thirukkural like poems are meant for viruththams only' does not demerit viruththam singing..! Does it..? It is equivalent to 'alaapanai' singing with words and the gana/naya and emotional aspects of raaga/words an be beautifully brought out by viruththam singing.
(I normally sing a passage from Kandar anubudhi as viruthham.. Try - vaLai patta kai maathodu makkaL enum.." and I love singing virththams..)
I suggest that we start a separate thread to discuss these issues instead of digressing in this review thread.

Hi Nick
What can I say about the Man with the Golden Voice and the 'Platinum' BRIKAS!!!!! It was indeed a fantastic concert, i wish I had done a longer announcement!!!!! :)
The Highlights were:
The 'mike test' - He started with Shri Gananadha in Malahari - Everyone learns this as their 1st Geedham, but very rerely would one hear this piece sung with such emotion and devotion!!!!!
He sang a wonderful self composed AMIRTHAVARSHINI, which covered every NADAI of Tala, i.e. the same lyrics, about Rama, sung in
3 THISRAM
4 CHARTHUSHRAM
5 KHANDAM
7 MISHRAM
9 SANKIRNAM - This Nadai is indeed very rarely done, Nick & I haven't seen this at any UK concerts!!!!!
The RAGAM THANAM PALLAVI broke all the rules and was certainly a 1st for me..... He did it in 2 Ragas, BAIRAVHI & SINDHUBAIRAVHI!!!!!!!! He started Raga in Bairavhi, then the Violinist(The very much up-coming star and may I add, a wonderful player - BALU RAGURAM of the UK Bharathiya Vidhya Bhavan) then played Bhairavhi, the he would do a phrase in Sindhu Bairavhi and so on....then the Thanam was exposed similarly. The Pallavi itself had the words Sindhu Bairavhi in it!!!!! This was also done according to tradition, just changing the Raga..... He the wne tonto the swaras, after the 2 Ragas, he did a short Ragamalika, using BAHUDHARI/HAMEER KALYANI(I think, not 100% sure) and the REVATHI(here he sdid a lot of vedic phrases which are done in this Raga, via the swaras - truely divine).
He also sang PASUPATHIPRIYA, the composition and creation of Halesunthur Muttaiya Bahavathar, his revered Guru.
This concert spanned 4 hours - In 1988, saw Maharajapuram Santhanam give a 4 hour, no break concert in the UK and this was the 2nd time I have seen this - 12 years later!!!!!!

Thanks for the review, geetha. Just curious about the swaras for Pasupathipriya, would you know?

RR, Pasupatipriya is a janya of HariKamboji, s r m p m d s . ava. s d p m r m s. It might have SuddhaSaveri gestalt. HMB has at least 4 krities in this raga. Apavargapradam ashrayeham- adi Pashupati priya sati pavani nive gati-rupakam, Sharavana bhava samayamidira -adi Uraga raja mani valaye -adi. I think TNS' guru was Mys. sadashivan, whose guru was Harikeshanallur Muttiah Bhagavatar. Will the real HMB please stand up !?. Speaking of standing up, 4 straight hours calls for a strong physical controls !!

nado:
TNS's guru is vidwan C.S.Shankara Sivam who was the direct disciple of HMB.

Thanks Geetha for the technical details -- and the enthusiasm.
I would say that it was the first time I have *recognised* sankeerna; I may have heard it before and not known.
It was a marathon concert, with no sense of hurrying the end even when the clock had passed 10:30. I think even the Thillana was precede by an improvisation of some length.

Ms. Charumathi Ramachandran presented an interesting concert on Saturday at Chembur Fine Arts Society, Mumbai. The occasion was 'Composers' Day' and she focused on Muthiah Bhagavathar and Annamacharya songs. Accompanists: Bombay R. Madhavan - Violin. Neyveli Narayanan - Mridangam. Sorry I don't have the exact program, but the main ragams were Hindolam ['Garuda Gamana'], and Kiravani.
There was also an interesting elaboration of Raga 'Niroshta' first 'discovered' by Muthiah Bhagavathar. This has been discussed earlier in the forum so I won't elaborate. She presented a self-composed chittaswaram in this raga.
During the regular Thani Avarthanam 'exodus', she was a bit ticked off and IMHO, rightly stopped the thani and requested the public to sit down... people leaving en masse before the thani has become a regular feature at Bombay concerts, which is really a pity... is this the same everywhere these days?
all in all, the concert was excellent. special mention must be made of the kalpanaswaras which were especially crisp in Hindolam and the 1st piece [Kamas - Varnam]. if anyone is interested in a recording, i should have it in a couple weeks.

THere has been a lot of discussion on the net about concert behaviour. I am glad to say that in UK people do sit and listen to the thani.

Sangeetha Kalanidhi Sri R.K.Srikantan performed at the Bangalore Gayana Samaj on 27th Aug, Sun. At 80, his shareeram and sruththi suddham is really worthy of emulation.
Starting from a rare varnam of rudrapatnam venkatarama iyer in kedaragowlam set to misra jhumpa tala, sri srikantan proceeded with the customary ganesha krithi in nata (shakthi ganapathi, roopakam, HMB) which was adorned with racey swarams.
next was "emani pogadudura" in veera vasantam, followed by a brief outline of janaranjani for "naadaadina maatalu" (misra chaapu, thyagu).
what followed was a moving "nagu momu" in the musuri paatantharam.
next came a raga alaapana of sahana which was suffixed by the thyagaraja masterpiece "giripai".
a noteworthy aspect was there were no swarams sung for "giripai"; there is a viewpoint that to such beautiful krithis and ragas, swara prasthaaraas do no add any beauty.
after a brisk "ne pogadakunte" (varaali, khada chapu, thyagu) came a raaga alaapanai of bhairavi which was delineated with aplomb. the not-s-oft-heard "chitayamaakanda moolakandam" was rendered and adorned with neraval and swarams for "anga soundarya vihitha madanam".
this was further decorated with the tani avaarthanam played by none other than Sangeetha Kalaanidhi T.K.Murthy supported by B.N.Chandramouli on the khanjiram.
the lilting kaapi piece "mee valla gunadoshamemi" was rendered - following which the piece de resitance of the concert, viz, the RTP in kalyaani was taken up for detailed exposition.
the pallavi was set to khanda triputa with thaka eduppu - the lines were from the patnam subramaniam krithi "nijadasa varada" :
"eesha kodanda khandana dureena janakajaa ramana".
the concert came to an end with some classic melodies like the jaavali "marubaari" and 2 devaranamams "kandu dhanyanaade" (behag) and "samsaara.."(suddha saaveri?).
on the whole it was a treat to lovers of music.
for students, the most educative part was sri srikantan's sruthi suddham and his strict adherence to the paathantharam and not resorting to unnecessary flights of manodharma within the krithi.
he had able accompaniments in sri T.K.Murthy and Delhi P Sounderrajan on the violin.
a truly satisfying concert on a whole.

To
Mr Prashant
Is it too late to request a recording of Charumathi's concert. I am specially interested in the rendition of "Niroshta". How do I listen?
Please let me know.
Ram

I think that Ne pogadakunte is in subhapanthuvarali. Sounds like a great concert. I am looking for some of his dasara kriithi renditions.

I have heard quite a few of NePogada in plain Varaali. It is indeed quite satisfying in Varaali. Only once in Shubha-pantu-varaali. That too was good (by NagamaniS). There is some persistent confusion about this.

ariyakudi has sung it in varaali.
i guess we could take his word for it.
because as far as paataantharam is concerned, it is well acknowledged that he was the authority in it.

I heard it by Balamurali and MLV (I think) in SPVarali
