Is there some code of conduct for kutcheries ?
The 'bhajana' goshti's of yore involved some kind of audience sing-along. Can the artistes walk around , talk or fixate on anyone in the audience ? Must they always face the audience. How much license does manodharma permit ?

They broke up several years back.
Sivakumar's MD site has a good recording of "Hasthivadhanaya" in Navaroj.

If people would recognise that all users here do not understand Thamil I would be grateful.
Perhaps some things just do not translate? then I must put up with not understanding: but a translation would be appreciated!

This request of mine is perhaps more relevant to certain other Carnatic music threads than this one. Wherever technical
expressions are used, is it possible to add a little explanation for the lay ears? or, is there a source ( web or elsewhere)where
tech words are explained?
Nado, what ( or who) is MD?

May need both bhaskar and Ramesh ( and others ) to accomplish this. Intelligent people make better lovers. Is it basically ignorance of the intricacies of talams that drives the pre-'tani' exodus ?

It just occurred to me that maybe TK Murthy is the only so-called SangeetKalanidhi percussionist ?( please correct if wrong ) hmmm...this may also be a symptom..

Not sure. Maybe Palghat Mani also ??
What are the rules, if any, on 'planned intermissions' during kutcheries ? I cannot recollect seeing any artiste get off the stage once they begin. ( seems against the laws of physiology for the 3-4 hour concerts ! )

Nandini:
I do not think Palghat Raghu is a "Sangeetha Kalanidhi".
I had heard from someone that BMK once gave an interval before the main song and told people that they could very weel have their bladder break or a walk at that point rather than getting up during the thani.

Has any modern CM kutchery hall been designed based on acoustic principles ( reflection of sound, stereo-surround effect, sound absorption by fabrics, wall features ) ?
The Globe theater which first presented Shakespeare in the 1600's had some such understanding, to carry unaided voice/dialogue. And Greek excavations show a characteristic curved amphitheatre.
I have seen artistes dividing up the 'intensity' and 'mike' placements based on the instrument (and accompanists enthusiasm). e.g. RaviKiran's mellow gottuvadyam has to struggle to be heard sometimes.

Is this 'maniac' still with us ? If he is I would like to ask him why he would choose hanging as opposed setting himself on fire. That can be equally compelling, visually.
I hope, though, this whole episode is not some stunt meant to artificially increase the 'value' of the SangitaKalanidhi award. There are many other sabhas with similar awards. All their kutcheries may now become equipped with gallows, rope and tinder-boxes, along with microphones.

If we look at the past few period's SKs they have not been there to come to the next year Music Academy...DKJ, Santhanam etc.. Probably there would be a time when people would threaten to hang themselves if they are awarded a SK??????

Oldest Living Sangeeetha Kalanidhi is Semmangudi. He got it in 1947. There is a short story behind this ..dont know if this is true...
Semmangudi is the person who usually decides who the next Kalanidhi is. In 1946 when he was asked to preside, it seems he refused to accept saying that his guru Maharajapuram Sr is not a SK yet and it will not be good to "overtake" is guru. Mah Sr was awarded SK that year and Semmangudi was awarded the title in 1947. True ???

As an aside: S. Chandrashekhar (Ramans nephew who also won the Nobel a few years back ) did the work for it almost 50 years ago. He had many students who had used his ideas as the basis of much their work and gone on to win the Nobel prize themselves. Finally they were so embarrassed that they decided to give it to him.
Such titles are naturally highly political now. Maybe they should award them posthumously ?
Anyway maybe Academy should wait until the artiste is a complete fossil, award the SK , then make them 'walk the plank' (by any method of their choice) Like a parting gift.
