What has always baffled me is the way in which I have heard that there is a very subtle relationship between the Ragam and the Talam. Please straighten me out if I am wrong here, but I understand that each Talam has a sort of "meaning" to it, or at least in a more mundane way, a sort of connotation in terms of when it may be used -- structurally at least. To this, I understand that the various Raga, in addition to having a certain character also might have some sort of meaning as well. Perhaps you can clarify this for me -- it would be greatly appreciated. Now, in terms of the relationship between the two, is it simply a matter of context, that is to say, are there musical situations which might dictate the use of a certain Talam and a corresponding Ragam?
