This thread is to discuss the different (complex) swara patterns that can be woven in Sindhubhairavi.

It is interesting that there appear to be absolutely no krities in this raaga (sampurna janya of Naatakapriyaa) by the Trinity. There are also very few krities in the parent Naatakapriyaa. It admits of many semi-classical tunes and is often used towards the end of a Carnatic concert.

Who is the composer of the famous Venkatachalanilayam?
Although technically, this raga might have an arohana-avarohana, taking into account the complex patterns that it can accomodate, this might be a good example of a raga refuses to be confined by a straight-forward definition.
Also the Hindustani counterpart of this raga, Bhairavi, seems to enjoy a more dominant presence on the concert platform.
I would believe that the Carnatic Raga Kapi is also pretty close in terms of the complex swara patterns it can accomodate.

By no means can Sindhu Bhairavi can be considered
a janya of Natakapriya. Sindhu Bhairavi, taking
its roots from Hindustani Bhairavi, can at best be
described a janya of mELa 8, similar to its
classification in Hindustani under Bhairavi that.
However due to its anya svaras, I guess it is best
to leave it alone than to bind with any janaka rAga.
Venkatachala Nilayam is Purandara DaSsa's composition
but I think the current maTTu was popularised
by MLV.
Natakapriya has some compositions. Dasharathe
dayAsharadHe( Tyagaraja) has been rendered very
nicely by U Srinivas in one of the Music Today
releases. Another composition I have heard is
'gIta vAdya natana nAtaka priye'. There is a kriti
of Mysore Vasudevacharya also, but I can't recollect
it now.
Kapi and its anya svaras are once again are
an influence of Hindustani kAFi

Would be certainly interesting to learn about a sanchara in Sindhubhairavi with a kakali nishada.
Are there any more ragas that fall into this category which defy being confined to an arohana/avarohana?
Anandabhairavi too has some rare prayogas, right?

Hi,
I was listening to the thyagaraja's krithi "namo namo rAgavAya" (supposedly his first song), in Desiya thodi, by sudha ragunathan. Sounded very close to sindhubhairavi. does anyone know the scale (arohana and avarohana) for this raga?

The first kriti of Tyagaraja is reportedly in Athana, 'Ela Nee dayaradu' according to V Raghavan. ( based on the Umayalpuram line of students )

Kakli nishadham in Sindhubhairavi comes in the prayoga
Ni Sa Ri (Ri there is suddha rishabham). DK Jayaraman has rendered Gangadeeshwaram Sankaram.
There I have heard in lines going as
Senjatadharam shivam. IIRC something like
"SenJatadharam Shi va ... m".

Narayanan, thanks very much for the insight.
Any idea if there are any prayogas in Sindhubhairavi which includes the antara gandharam?
It seems now, with the learning about kakali Nishadam that this raga can accomodate at least 11 notes out of 12. Is there any raga which can accomodate all the 12 notes?

Sindhu Bhairavi can stand a sparing use
of Antara G also ! In fact in Hindustani system
this rAga is called Dvadashi Bhairav since it
can take all the 12 notes.

Mysore Vasudevacharya's Naatakapriya composition is: "Idi samayamu brovaraada'. I have not heard any one sing this composition, though.

oops that is a ChayaNata of Tyagaraja Idi samayamura inakula tilakaa OK This ChayaNaata (from Vagadheeswari ) may have little to do with the HM ChaayaNaT, which is probably of Bilawal thaat.

The usage in which antaragandharam appears is something like
"ga* Maa ri ga sa ri " etc. It is used sparingly.
Ravi Kiran, I have the cassatte of TNS which you are refering to. Besides Sindhu Bhariravi he has sung Akshaya Lingam Vibho, Manasuloni and Shanka-Chakra(poornachandrika). I consider it as a gem

Sindu Bairavi was introduced to a few of us by Paapanaasam Sivan's 'VadhanamaE chandra bimbamO', sung by MK Thiyagaraaja Bagavathar..
Here's an anecdote about that song.
Paapanaasam Sivan had written the lyrics as 'Mugamadhu(mugam+adhu) chandra bimbamO'.
MKT was rehearsing the song for the film.
Along came the famous comedian N.S.Krishnan.
As soon as MKT had sung the first line,
'mugamadhu chandra bimbamO',
he followed up immediately with,
'Esu enna bimbamO?':-)

The sindhubhairavi currently sung is janya of Thodi.Some also say that it is natabhairavijanya.Swathithirunaal,pattanam subramanyaiyer,thanjavoor sankarayyar,etc have some compositions in it.There is also a thillana to lalgudy jayaraman's credit,and bajare gurudaivam of balamuralikrishna.But there was another sindhubhairavi,of naatakapriyajanya in ancient times which was a madhyaraaga and it is not sung by musicians usually.The following are sindhubhairavi.kannane kandaayo,bhajare,smaram vaaram vaaram,,kalyanagopalam,nin**** rathi entru,shanmugham bhaje,viswesware darsan kar,bhajabhaja maanasa,raamachandraprabhu,manathirkkukantha,karunai daivame,etc.This is a sankararaaga.used for minor classical songs.acording to dr s.ramanaathan sindhubhairavi was a janya from desyathodi.Naatakapriya is a raaga with the same notes as thodi except a chathusruthy daivatha and sindhubhairavi of ancient yore was sung like that.
