Hi all,
I'm new to this classical stuff. I just started learning karnatic music, finished few geethams. I always wondered how to practice. I would like to collect all of your methods.

Sahana/kuntalavarali ?!
seems like you are not new enough to know some of the raga names of this classical stuff.
This is vocal ? I remember of some breathing exercises, preferably half-submerged in a tank. Do you have an indoor pool not a jacuzzi ?

Thnx Nado, yes this is vocal. I don't have any indoor pool except the bathtub.

Sahana - on a serious note, you may want to try singing your sarali varisais, janda varisais in akaaram, ekaaram, ukaaram and namkaaram. That is a very good exercise. In 3 or 4 kaalams(speeds).

Sahana...try singing your geethams in akaram.
And also try singing Sarali/Janta/Alankaarams in different raagas.....Start with the first speed and proceed to 2nd and 3rd,etc.

Sahana/kuntalavarali
You would do well to heed all the nuances of practice described above. However I feel the proper tanks for you are only in India. But as most American Indians, you still have the names of all the classical stuff, e.g. Minnesota, Sahana, Dakota, Kuntalavarali, Ohio, Utah etc. Thats great.

We live in a society of dilettantes and dabblers.
A new student, more than anyone else, should show a little respect. Is this old-fashioned ? Sometimes I am not as mellow as perhaps I should be, should have more patience like the rest of you gentle souls here. I hope I haven't scared off anyone.
Aren't there vocal exercises in tanks to improve stomach and lungs ?
