The late Maharaja of Mysore is a wonderful composer. His compositionas are gramatically great and composed in the rarest of ragas.I'd request one and all to share their views about his compositions and also mention any rare gems sung by musicians which you may have in your collection!I recently heard his composition in Gamanasrama.Outstanding!

karthik,
the maharaja has composed around 94 krithis and each of them are in a different raga!!
he wanted to compose 100 krithis but he unfortunately passed away before that.
he has composed in several rare raagams like hamsavinodini, prathapavarali, etc. and rare taalams like khanda jhampa, etc.
he composed with the "Srividya" ankitham and nearly all of his krithis are composed on devi in her many forms.
sangeetha kalanidhi sri rk srikantan has sung a tape full of the maharaja's krithis.
the maharaja was a very innovative composer and his compositions are very rich in raaga bhaava as well as saahitya bhaava.

There is a recording of Jayachamaraja Wodaiyar Krithis by Rudrapatnam Brothers (90 minutes) sponsored by Carnatic Music Assoc. of North America (CMANA) during their first trip to USA.
Some of the songs featured there are: gam Ganapathe (Durvanki), Saraswathim Bhagavathim (Hamsavinodini), etc.
Are there any other recordings exclusively on Jayachamara Krithis?

I heard Sri RK Srikantan sing a concert featuring only Wodeyar kritis about one and a half years back in Bangalore. Some kritis he had sung were gam ganapate ( durvanki ), bhajareremanasa ( poornachandrika ), manonmani maamavatu ( suddha dhanyasi ), baale brihasrishti ( simhendramadhyamam ), brahmaanda valaye ( maand ), ksheerasaagara ( mayamalavagowla ) etc.
Are there any books published in Tamil/English containing his kritis ? I have seen one in kannada, covering a few of his compositions.

M.S. Subbalakshmi popularized the Jayachamaraja Wodaiyar Krithi "Siva SIva Siva Bho Mahadeva Shambho" in Nadanamakriya, and is available in one of her old LPs.

The choice of raagas in the krities of JCW is interesting. kadanakutuhalam seems inspired by Patnam, not sure of the eras involved. But no Sahana and only one Kalyani suggest a lot of deliberation and restraint.

PPN : mAnayata in kokilapriya is in tisra jhampai.
Kartik, I think the mALavi kriti is shankari sadaanandalahari ( adi ). Pls correct me if u r sure that the first word is sarasvati. Other additions include kamalAmbikE ( nATTai , khaNda jhampai ), brihannAyaki ( nAyaki, Adi ), paripAhimAm in s'uddha dhanyAs'i, mis'ra jhampai.
PS : Kartik, since he has relocated from Blr I shall mail u as soon as I get his reply - I have already sent the enquiry.
