Hello,
I love Santhanam's singing, his rendering of certain krithis are laden with expression and creativity. I think that there are almost as many people who think he is a disaster as a singer as who adore his singing. I belong to the latter sort. In either case, please feel free to share your opinions.

>>> we might have a brilliant playback singer to the loss of equally brilliant CM vocalist <<<
I feel there is no guarantee, that Unni or Nithya or other starlets, whether based on lineage, scholarship, voice etc. would become brilliant at CM. I must also confess I have no sense of loss at their seeking greener pastures. So many talented 'child prodigies' pass before us and mutate as well.

Very interesting digression from the topic of this thread:-) How about switching between CM and Hindustani music(HM)? There is a general perception ( and warning) that if say, a CM student tries to learn HM simultaneously, it will affect his\her CM singing.
Over to the experts.

Ramji - I think that is a wrong perception that a few senior vidhwans seem to have, unfortunately :)In my opinion, learning Hindusthani music basic lessons is one of the best ways to nurture one's voice... their breathing exercises are very helpful.... that coupled with our own "akaara sadahams" could make wonders...

I have noticed both Shashikiran and the Hyderabad brothers make a concerted effort to include some HM style phrases in their kutcheries, the latter especially with the 'desya' ragas.
I wonder if CM instrumentalists may/maynot make such transitions easily.

>>I wonder if CM instrumentalists may/maynot make such transitions easily<< Listen to MSG is the answer :::)))
talking about Hyderabad brothers, I am sorry but am not impressed with their "HM style phrases "...
I think Bombay jayashree would be a better example Nado

Apologies to Santhanam fans. Just one more:
How about Music teaching, especially to many students, affecting the teacher's voice?

Ramji that is a very true statement... great teachers are unfortunately not successful in the concert arena for this reason...
For this reason, KVN's wife makes sure KVN restricts the number of students he teaches to... Infact he did/does not have those many students...

IR/Ramji:
On the Contrary, DKJ had over 1000 students. during his last days he had over 100 "active" students and he prsonally used to teach each one of them.

Narayanan: But DKJ lost his "rich" voice ... is it mainly because he used to sing with DKP or is it because he had a lot of students? or is it a combo of both?

IR:
DKJ had a lot of health problems like nervous disorer and Blood Sugar. In the midle of a concert his blood sugar goes low (due to the singing) and the sruti lapses. He takes some hard boiled candy to shoot the sugar up and manage proper sruti. He was giving Vocal support for DKP till mid 70s. A 1.5 "kattai" thorat to sing for a 5 "kattai" as support is not a joke.
These are the two main reasons for him to lose the "richness" in his voice.

So interesting. IR, Narayanan, Nado et al, Thanks for the input. Could we continue this here or in a separate thread? We can cover singing for dance etc.
Several years ago, there was a music teacher by name Vaitha Bagavathar, sishya of Ariyakudi. Obscure mainly because he just did not have the voice to sing, he was a great teacher. Taught a few members of my family.

nado et al:
in connection with great teachers having voice
problems, i think an exception has to be made for
srikantan mama.
he has taught many disciples and is one of the most
sought after teachers in bangalore, but still his
voice still has that timbre - at 80, his sruthi
suddhamAna shadjam is truly awe inspiring!!

Ramji, The good and great teachers must be attained after some effort by the prospective sishyas. The 'unattractive' voice may help repel unmotivated students.
