Nadooooo; consider yourself (and myself??!!!) lucky :::))) here you go...
D.PATTAMMAL - MUSICIAN / COMPOSER.............(b. - c.1928)
Wife of Dr.M.N.Dandapani, Pattammal is an ardent devotee of Classical music initially as a vocalist and when she lost her voice, as a composer and musicologist. She had been giving concerts on All India Radio for sometime but her contribution to music is laudable for her publications and compositions :
'Madhava Geetham' - Jayadeva's Ashtapadi in Tamil in 1979;
'Mela Ragha Kritimala' - Tamil compositions in the 72 Mela ragas in 1981 as has been done by Kotiswara Ayyar;
'Janya Raga Kritimala' with 83 compositions;
'Raga Pravaham' jointly with her spouse on raga classifications, etc., a book of reference of much use in 1984;
Hundreds of kritis and kirtanas called Arul kirtanas, Tiruvilayadal Kirtanas, etc.
Pattammal had varied training in music with Alamelu Jayarama Ayyar ( an authority on Ashtapadi and wife of famous lawyer, K.S.Jayarama Ayyar), Pozhakudi P.V.Ganesier, Kalakad Ramanarayana Ayyar and D.K.Pattammal.
Titles & Honours :
Sahitya Ratna, Vaggeya Ratna & Kalimamani from Tamil Nadu Eyal Isai Nataka Mandram

Thanks Isrsgi :-)) >>> initially as a vocalist and when she lost her voice, as a composer and musicologist.<<<
I just read a review of a teenager's 'whistle' concert in the Hindu. Before moving to an instrument, perhaps a failed vocalist should try this ?!
I suspect the days of the great 'vaggeyakaras' are long over. Prolific composers now are not prolific performers, sometimes not even performers. And many of todays performers with aspirations of being composers, are bereft of any spiritual-philosophical vision.
Have you heard anyone singing/rendering 'Yarendru' you cited above in YadKam. of ArunachalaKavi. I have a portion of an MDR rendition. It was simply terrific.

This Vinai Kuppier ( IntaChala begada varnam ) is supposed to be a student of Tyagaraja. apparently he had a fondness for Narayanagaula ( this is some net-hearsay , not sure ). Tiruvotriyur Tyagayya is the son of this Kuppier.
This T. Tyagayya put forth a kriti in a raaga Mechakangi, which may or may not be an old raga. If not then it is a concoction of TTyagayya. It may be understandable for someone like him trying to escape the long arm of the Trinity and his own parent. This Mechakangi may be related to Gamakakriya.

Can someone who knows please comment on the differences between the two Nagaswaravali krities Garudagamana of PatnamSI and SriSankara of MahaVaidyanathI. Both are in Rupaka talam and the scale is a fairly limited pentatonic, non-vakra. Thanks.
I think the initial movements are very similar, but I am not sure. I have read that PSI and MVI were more than just contemporaries (circa 1895), probably moderate competitors.

Has anyone ever heard any kriti of Ramaswami Dikshitar being performed ? He appears to have been totally eclipsed by MD. There is one suggestion that some krities were put together jointly by the family, cannot confirm.

Ramaswamy Dikshitar has remarkable accomplishments: (i) The longest 108 raga Tala Malika with ragamudra and tala mudra appearing for each of the 108 ragams; (unfortunately the commplete text is lost, and only 61 lines have come down to us. It is available in SSP.
(ii) in addition, ghe composed some very lengthy Ragamalikas (Sivamohana shakti - 44 ragams, manasaverutarala - 48 ragams, and Samajagamana - 20 ragams;
(iii) ramaswamy Dikshitar invented (created?) ragam hamsadhwani, and composed the first ever krithi in that Ragam: a varnam " Sree Subrahmanya" in Rupaka talam; (iv) he composed a unique swara sthana varnam in Todi whole sahityam uses only the sevel letters sa, ri, ga, ma, pa dha and ni: sarigaani daani paamarini nii pada ....
(later BMK has a similar composition!), and (v) another unique "anuloma - pratiloma daru: Sarasa nayana in ragam Gangatharangini. This daru has the feature of a palindrome, that each line can be read forward as well as reverse, and the ext is the same., and lastly (vi) he gave us MD!!

talking of ramaswami dikshithar his guru
virabhadrayya seems to have been a brilliant composer too.
any details abt him?

PPN, thanks for the RD details. Which artistes attempt his krities, perhaps even the ragamalikas ? It is quite interesting that RD invented Hamsadhwani, and the one or two Tyagaraja krities in this have also been disputed. There is no SyamaSastri kriti in it either. It is likely that GajavadanaBeduve of PDasa in Hamsadhwani is therefore a clever manipulation by some later artiste.
Is there a musical pattern ( maybe a Yati ) in the RD palindromic daru as well ?
Are there other krities of RD showing some standard Yati patterns ? Do the RD krities also have the raga-mudra ? The Todi piece you posted may not be expected to have it, since it is a varnam ??

Nado:
here is the Anuloma Pratiloma Daru (palindromic) in Ragam gangatarangini, by Ramaswami Diskhitar:
pallavi
sArasa nayana sarasA sAratara ratarasA
anupallavi
mAratAta tAramA mAnita madhyamatanimA
tArapabhAparatA tApitAvayava tApitA
charanam
bhArambhAtamita bhArambhA bhAva rAga taLatAgarAvabhA
bhAratE tavata tErabhA sAnapatitapa titamanasA
hAravidhi rodhiviraha hAvanana tAnanavahA
sarutu mEtumE sarasA sakhi veNkaTakrishNa sarasa
As you can see, Ramaswami Dikshitar used the mudra of his patron: Manali Venkatakrishna.
Hamsadhwani: The first composition was a Lakshya Prabandham by Ramaswamy Dikshitar in Matya Talam:
" Chandaseyaurunda maladhara".
Subbarama Dikshirat's SSP has the first 61 lines of the longest Raga Tala malika of RD.
