Hi all
I want to start\restart a line on Arunachala Kavirayar (AK). Here are the leads:
1. anybody aware of complete, sequential rendering of ramanatakam instead of non-sequential, tukkada collections?
2. what are his other works?
3. His inspirations, history of his creativity, tutelage, sishya parampara.......
thanks,
gopal

KK
this is from cal library. the
tirunalaipovar is by RG pathi company, madras (1967) and tamizhisai padalgal (6th vol) is from Annamalai univ.
isnt it amazing that two works separated by at least by 100 years and composed in entirely different cultural and political climate about varied topics, have similar structure and language? With bharathiyar (S)'s panchali sabadam...written around two decades after GKB passed away, the language and structure are entirely different!

Gopal: however, bharathiyaar was also heavily influenced by GKB. There are several songs where he cites the tunes to be from nandhanaar charithram. e.g. Oy thilakarE, namma jaathikkadukkumO sung by Sowmya in one of her albums. There's another using the anandha kaLippu mettu of GKB, though I forget the equivalent bharathiyaar song.
It's quite possible that GKB in turn was influenced by AK though this may be harder to trace. Incidentally, the structure of AK's RNK e.g. the tharu etc appear to be patterned after earlier compositions in sanskrit e.g. naraayana theertha's krishna leelaa tharangini. This/last week's hindu had an article on this composer and suggested that he may also have been an influence on thayagaraaja (prahlaada bhaktha vijayam, nowka charithram).

it is "aaduvome pallu paaduvome, ananda sudandiram ", song by MLV and DKP(in a movie?).
Not only that:
-GKB: "maadu thinnum pulaiya,unakku margazhi"
SB: "thondu seyyum adimai unakku sudandira"
-GKB: "Naam enna seyvom pulaiyare"
SB: "Naam enna seyvom thunaivare"
-GKB: "Aandai kadimaikaran"
SB: "Anniyarkadimaikaran"
There are couple of them more, i could recall now. The dramatic rendering of songs like tharu etc. that fits to a sequel of scenes ina (dance)drama or opera seems to be universal. What surprises me that, very common , colloquial,
dialectical language set to raagams used in both RNK and TNP. No wonder,I havent so far listened to Panchali sabadam songs sung by any artiste!!
This brings back to my memory, Raja Arichandran kadai,in the form of Koothu, which I listed to at Triplicane in early eighties. I remember the artiste (a traditional artiste) rendering some songs with aalapanai and swarams etc.!! Maybe, this kind of tamizhisai was more prevalent in 18 and 19th century, with songs set to raagams and bound by taalams which found a place when Carnatic music became more of a sabha-centered as seen in 20th century.
