I am noticing now that the discussions are focussed on artists of yesteryears and so maybe a thread for current and upcoming artists would be refreshing.
Please feel free to discuss your opinions of any of the currently performing artists, newcomers, about their live concerts or recorded albums etc...

In this context , I would like to ask for info. on this Sikkil Mala Chandrasekhar the flutist. Is she the daughter of one of the Sikkil sisters duo ? it seems to me she does not know how to take an unmelodious note. I am also becoming more comfortable with Sowmya perhaps because her voice/body have thickened with the assault of time.

What do you think of rajkumar Bharathi? I heard a recorded concert by him and I liked his way of singing. He definitely has potental.
I agree with Nado. about Sikkil Mala, she is really good with the numbers she chooses to render and also with how she does it.

IMHO, TM Krishna, Vijay Siva, Unnikrishnan and Sanjay Subramanian are a cut above the rest of the "youth brigade" (vocalists, that is). None has as yet taken it to the next level by crafting a unique personal style.
Lots of others are highly talented. I think Nithyashree esp has huge potential if she refines her musical judgement (cuts out unneccessarily long kalpanaswarams, for instance).
I believe Mala Chandrashekar is the daughter of Sikkil Neela, elder of the Sikkil sisters.

Has Rajkumar Bharathi trained under Balamuralikrishna at all? He sure sounds a lot like him.

it is really difficult to come up with a unique personal style in today's scenario i think.
because most of us invariably idolise one or two maestros of the past - be it SSI (in the case of TMK), GNB (Sanjay) or more recently DKP/DKJ (Vijay Siva) and hence most of the singing techniques and style are greatly inspired from them.

I like Vijay Siva & Balaji Shankar, in the younger artists' group. Both have got neat diction and express "balance", in the selection as well as rendering of songs in the concert.
In the female world, Bombay Jayashree appeals better ,as she tries to sing in a "slow" pace (is it technically "vilamba" kalam ?!!).

I think,Rajkumar Bharathi's guru is TV Gopalakrishnan.

SP Ramh..another great name in the list of young vocalists. His voice and manodharma are superb. Incidentally, he is also an engineer from IIT, Madras. His guru is none other than Lalgudi Jayaraman.
Have u heard him sing?..

The standards set by Sanjay Subrahmanyan in Classism is very high.
He really takes the rasika to a different plane of
bliss with his dedication.

'Nadopasaka' had referred to Aparna Thiagarajan daugther of OST, in the other thread on MDR. She imbibes the time tested trends in her musical family and has also trained under Neyveli Santhanagopalan. She's relatively very new to the field but has a couple of albums to her name. The Shanmukhapriya in her first album speaks well of her Manodharmam.

DEAR SHYAM
Your intention to get the details of up-coming artists is welcome .I feel that while suggesting names always the artists are selected from the region of Madras. i feel this is absolutely wrong. In Kerala we have highly talented and gifted high standard classical quality music performers who can be listed. But the media rounds the chennai city only. I recently heard an interviw in the SUN TV about the sabhas and the artists running behind the organisers and sponsors for concerts . The sponsors are father and mother who with the help of Critics of Press boosts substandard performers to greater heights.IT IS THE TRUTH, NO DOUBT.

I think it would be constructive to provide details of the so called "gifted artists" and elucidate us rather than whine! Sorry if it sounds too harsh.

Why do you think they do that? ;-) Hint: News is reported from where it happens. ;-)
BTW, artists and/or their parents running behind the organisers is a universal phenomenon!

This thread was not started to discuss just artistes from Chennai, I wonder why this perception was made.
Please feel free to discuss any artiste you feel is good.
