It will be nice for us all to discuss the various Carnatic concerts we attend during the year. I feel that it's a good idea to categorise this by year, starting with 1998, so that we can keep track of what, who saw in which year.

"I've been to two concerts this year - pretty poor for me, as I tend to go to many more, usually.
1) RAJKUMAR BHARATHI
.....
1) The main thing is that Rajkumar Bharathi sang a lot of Subramaniya Bharathi and Gopalakrishna Bharathiar songs, in Tamil,
many Rare pieces. He did the main piece in Shankarabarnam(Mahalakshmi, Papanasam Sivam) and a very long
Hamsanadham(quite Rare in the fact that he sang about 20 minutes of Raga for this - a real achievement, bringing out all the
nuacences), Latitha - A Tamil composition..."
------------------------------------
Geetha,
Could you tell me the actual Tamil songs that Rajkumar Bharathi sang in that conert...
particularly the major pieces like the Sankarabanam and Hamsanandham ones?
I know it is nearly a year since you wrote this.. :-))
Thanks
Chandra

Chandra: Did you read my post? I put the Sankarabarnam song in the brackets and even gave the composer!!!!! - "Shankarabarnam(Mahalakshmi - This is the Title of the Krithi!, This is the Composer, Papanasam Sivam)". It is a very famous Krithi, set in Mishra Chaapu Thaalam.
As for the Hamsanadham, it was a Saraswathi Krithi(I think) by Gopalakrishna Bharathiyar(GB). This year(99), Raj sang a lovely Tamil JAGANMOHINI, also a composition of GB.

I'm not sure if it's just me... I've been reading Hindu Music reviews for a verrrrry long time. Other than SVK, I find other reviewers following the same recipe as is prevalent with the reviewers of North American concerts. ;-) Just priase the artist 99% of the time irrespective whether it was a great concert, a so-so one, or just plain awful (trust me, I had attended a couple of downright awful concerts by "famous" artists). This takes away the credibility of the reviewer and it just becomes an article where a list of songs rendered in the concert is interweaved in the mosaic of "this-was-great" "that-was-great" yadda yadda yadda..... ;-( Wish the reviewers are more balanced in their review.

Hi Guys,
I attended Gayatri Girish's concert yesterday in Oklahama city. Though I missed the initial part of it, I was there befoer the RTP commenced. It was in Shankarabharanam. she has a very good voice. at high pitches, i think she resembles sudha raghunathan. but i may be wrong.
Sree, I agree with you, most of the Hindu reviews are just the praise of "rendering of Kalyani was brilliant" or "the rtp was in thodi which was handled beautifully" etc. not with any "useful" stuff.

Hi! Guys
I attended the Millennium Music series at Lincoln Center,NYC on Sep 11 and 12.
It was really a "FAST FOOD" concert series !! Just an hour and half for each concert..
I am recollecting the main pieces and penning down... Excuse me if there are any mistakes ...
Sep 11
6.30- 8.0 --Violin Trio by Shri.Lalgudi Jayaraman ,his son and daughter.
Main piece was "Mohanam"--Mohana Rama
The tillana was great in "Tilang"
8.0--9.30 -- Shri.T.V Sankara Narayanan & Party
Main was "Kamboji" ---Kaana Kan kodi vemndum ,Papanasam Sivan krithi
He also rendered a superb piece "Vaali Nayaku Ni" in Shanmugapriya-- That really built up the tempo of the concert.
Sep 12:
6.0-7.30 -- Mandolin duo by U.Srinivas and U.Rajesh
They Started with "Mooladhara Moothi", Papanasam Sivan krithi in Hamsadhwani.. It's excellent performance.
They played main in "Vakulabaranam"-RTP. It's a nice raaga (Totally new to me) .Sounded more of arabic tunes to me.
7.30 - 9.0 PM--P.Unnikrishnan & Party
He started with "Deva Deva ", Swathi Tirunal krithi in MMG
The main was in Thodi ( Kathanu variki , Tyagaraja Krithi). He converted it to a Raga malika..
Thodi was a brave attempt for such a fast concert... Somehow it did not appeal so much to me..You know 40 mts is too short a time to perform THODI...
On the whole , it's a good treat ---mini madras music season over a weekend!!

Just retd attending the concert of Smt Nityashree at Austin. She announced the ragas after she sang the piece, some them really kept me guessing. I will just mention the most interesting ones. She started with Sri vignarajam bhaje in Gambira nattai (OVSubbaiyer). There was no RTP, but the main piece was in Karnataka Devagandhari (throughout I thought it was Abheri, not much diff anyways). She sang a piece by Kadalur Subramanyan (im not sure about the name of composer - it was on Lord Subrahmanya) and the raga was Sutradhari with preceding vrittams in Sahana, Hamsanandi, Hindolam.I dont have this raga in my reference book. Anybody know of this raga? it sounded between shanmukhapriya - dharmavati scales. There was another interesting piece in Vasanthi, i forgot the composition. And finally the one I liked was a composition by Kalki, Poonguiyil paadum solayil (i forgot the lyrics). She mentioned that this was taught to her grandmother DKP by Kalki himself, when she was still Miss DKP! [1937-38]. The raga was Misra Kapi. This is worth a hearing.
Other were: Orajhupujhu in Kannada Gowla, Bantureeti in Hamsanandam (she called it HamsanAdam, which is right?), Sri sathyanarayanam [subhapantuvarali, MD], one in Karnaranjini [vanchathonu, HMB], a kirti in Begada [vaa muruga, composer?], one in Madhuvanti, a Sai baba bhajan and the Madurai Mani Iyers english note (GMGRGMPGMPRGP...). She mentioned that it was composed by Prof. Sambamurthy and popularised by MMI though its called MMI's english note. She ended with Tillana in Revati by LJ. In the end, I was happy that I hadnt heard most of the kirtis before.

Vasu :
Vaa Muruga Vaa is by Sri Spencer Venugopalan
Pandureethi is in HamsanAdham.
The krithi of Sri Kalki is
Poonkuyil Koovum Pooncholaiyil Orunaal
Maamayil Meedhu Maayamaai vandhaan ...
About the Raga Abheri, Old schols sing Abheri differently with Sudddha Dhaivadham. MD's Veenabheri is a true example. Anoter one is Papanasam Sivan's krithi
"Kandhaa Vandharul".
The Naghumomu which is sung nowadays is actually Karnataka Devagandhari. Another krithi in K.Devagandhari is Bhajare Maanasa by Mysore Vasudevachar.
The Ragam in for the swaram between Shanmukhpriya and Dharmavati might be Simmendra Madhyamam.

Vasu: The english note that you refered to in Nityashri's concert is actually called noTTu svara sAhitya and muttusvAmi dIkSHitar composed 36 of them, all in shankarAbharaNa rAga. Madurai mani made one of these compositions famous. The other raga she sang is HamsanAda or HamsanAdam in tamil.
Raga Sutradhari is a janya of the 63rd mela Latangi and has the following notes: S G3 P D1 N3 S; S N3 D1 P G3 S. Kadalur Subramaniam has composed many kritis and he is one of the select few who have composed songs in all of the 72 melakarta ragas. The raga Vasanti is a janya of the 16th mela Chakravaka and the notes are: S M D N S; S N D P M G P M G R S. Lalgudi Jayaraman has composed a tillana in this raga. Hope this helps. Lakshman

Is "Notes" a composition of Dikshitar or his brother? I've read somewhere that Dikshitar's brother also contributed a lot to Carnatic music.
May his brother is the first to adopt Violin to carnatic world!! I'm confused and can't recollect clearly.
I'm recollecting the following info also from the same book.
Dikshita's father used to take Dikshitar and his brother to Madras fort every morning.(May be he ws working there, then)
Dikshitar and his brother used to observe the British Band's playing the English notes (western version of it) everyday in Madas fort . Dikshitar's fly used to live at Manali those days.
Pls Correct me wherever I'm wrong..
Thanks in advance
Gopal
