Hello all fellow-rasikas,
I have recently been listeneing to Purandaradasar krithis rendered by MLV, Sudha, Santhanam, Balamurali, Bombay Sisters etc (tapes exclusively containing Daasara krithis).
Even though I cant understand the language very well, I can still feel the bhakthi intensity in his keerthanas. Please share your feelings, knowledge and opinions with me and others like me.If this topic has been opened in this forum already, please let me know.

hi,
you are right.
purandaradasa's krithis(keerthanas) have a devotional
fervor in them.
it must be mentioned that Sangeetha Kalanidhi
R.K.Srikantan of Bangalore has done a great deal
to bring to light several of purandaradasa's krithis.
apart from him, several other musicians, like MLV,
GNB, etc. have also done a great deal in highlighting
the genius in purandaradasa.
one more thing,
it would be very interesting to observe the
similarity between the lyrical content of
purandara dasa and thyagaraja.
i would love to hear from fellow rasika about this
aspect.

I also that Bombay sisters and ofcourse MLV have played an importent role in bringing out a lot of devarnamas....Their pronounciations are also very good that a local Kannadiga also enjoys! Now, I hear that MSSheela is doing a good job.

What are the Ganapati krities of PDasa ? I can think of gajavadana and sharanu siddhi-vinayaka right now.

Here are some more Ganapathi songs......These songs are sung in different raagas by diff.vocalists.
Vandipe Ninage Gananaatha
Sathatha Gananaatha
Vandisuvu daadiyali gananaathana

N, approx. what raagas are these in ? Sharanusiddhi is usually Natai and Gajavadana - Hamsadhwani. Thanks.
Since there is no sishya parampara of PDasa to speak of, it is generally open season on his krities by modern artistes, looking to carve out a personal niche.

Nadopasaka: Here's a surprise for you.
Gajavadana beduve is sung in Nata, Shriranjani, Kedara, Hamsadhvani, Gaula, Gambhiranata and Dhanyasi.
Satata gananatha is in Nata and Mohana
Sharanu siddhi is in Saurashtra, Nata and Hamsadhvani
Vandisu in Nata and Jaganmohini
Vandipe ninage gananatha-I don't have on my list.

I've heard versions of Gajavadana in Ranjani and sharaNu siddi vinAyaka in Mohana. Never heard this Vandipe ninage Gananatha.
M S Sheela, Nagamani Srinath and Vidyabhushana are
some of the artists who have good albums of dEvara
nAmas. Sudha Raghunathan, Balamuralikrishna &
Bombay sisters are also commendable for their good
diction and reportoire.
M.Santhanam, Gayathri girish, Unnikrishnan etc top
the list in killing the sAhitya :-( IMHO, at least
the artists when singing for an album can check
the sahitya from some good sources.

The facility afforded by Gajavadana for multiple raaga interpretations makes it a very special choice of words. Now we should look for the same person rendering it in different raagas !

forgot to mention:
RK Srikantan and other senior vidwans had a conference
on this raga-liberties wrt PDasa krithis.
so, around 20y ago, they chose around 9 keerthanas
and standardised their tunes and had a sort of
an agreement that they would stick to these tunes.
this was revealed to me by Srikantan mama himself.

Hi
I am not sure many non-madhwa people would have listened to Swamiji's (Subrahmanya mutt of Udupi-eight-mutt-umberalla)rendering of Dasa krithis. one of hte reasons may be, for people not knowing kannada,it would be difficult to pick his tapes labelled in kannada. butif you have friends of the language, please try it.
Not only purandara dasa, Kanaka dasa was another savant. he was much alike to our nandanar but more luckier that he was accommodated in the group by
senior savants like Sri Vijayeendra Swamiji of 16th century. his songs are also of spiritual thirst, towards the side of gnana. it is unfortunate that we miss the beautyof the same as there are no proper translations of the songs. maybe we should demand the Music companies to release an english translation of the Dasa songs
when they release special editions..

hi
i forgot to mention. the mudras of P.dasa-purandara vitala
Kanaka dasa-Adhi kesava
there are some beautiful songs with mudra: vijaya
vittala (by vijaya dasa?)
we have to understand this: PD and KD composed their songs in continuum of the spiritual renaissance in INdia initiated in northern india
by saint ramanand, his disciple kabir, soor das etc. so the Bhava of these songs remain to be in
harmony with general mood of that India. They form the part of a larger bhakthivadic sahithya..
Most of P Dasa songs were structured in some ragas available that time but restructured latter to
strengthen Carnatic Music literature. Their stress
(that of KD too) is on bhakthi and gnana.Present day styleof rendering Dasa songs as main piece with more emphasis on the expertise of the artiste
belies the intensity of emotions and worded-agony
of those seekers.
