Hi!
I don't know much about the style adopted by Sri.MSG , but here is a bit I know of..
MSG style is called the "Parur PAAni"--Parur being is native place. His father is Parur Sundaram Iyer.
MSG is an exponent & Stalwart of Hindustani Music.
It's very different from LGJ (Sri.Lalgudi) School which is "GAAyaki Style"( I guess this strictly adapts itself and follows the voalist / main artist to the swara ). That's why you can see LGJ's follow ups would be more than perfect (200%)and it'll be very pleasing .
Experts --Correct me and update with more info!!

Hey
I too am a big fan of lalgudi. But the other indian violinists that I admire are tn krishnan and ms gopalakrishnan and n rajam
Contrary to what you believe Ms is also quite profecient in carnatic though his carnatic allapanai shows a lot of traces of hindustani
I think all indian violinists adopt the gayaki ang or the vocal style but probably to varying extents
eg
Lalgudi-a very strictly orthodox form which is brilliant to listen to if you know the raga and the song etc but beginners will probably find it difficult to appreciate his greatness
tn krishnan-I would recomend him to any body
begginer or rasika. His sruti leaves you spell bound at times
ms-a brilliant light style. If I want to feel happy i listen to him.his presentation of varnams is quite fantastic

I am an ardent fan of MSG. There is no doubt that he is the Best Soloist and Accompanist available on earth for Carnatic Music. I saw someone say that his style is a light style. I completely disagree with them. It is so CLASSICAL and RICH in TRADITION. I have almost 100 hrs of MSG concerts which include many solos and Accompaniments. His accompaniment is so good that you often see him repairing the sangathis of vocalists. His sense of srithi is ULTIMATE. His ultimate control on the instrument is unachievable by anyone on this earth. This was told by Yehudi Mehnin, the world renowned Violinst. Whatever I have heard from MSG in my music life of 15 years has been always the Best I could hear on Violin. His Varna rendering is the Best. The way he conceives impossible gamakas and presents them with a nice pleasant smiling face is unbelievable. I myself play violin, and have been performing for the past 12 years in AIR & Music Sabhas. He is a Living GOD as far as Violin is concerned in Music.

Hey prasad
I am not a great violinists so please pardon me if you were affected by my comment that he has a light style.By light I certainly did not mean non-classical or not technically perfect .I personally can imagine how other violinist play but his bowing is so light and gamaks are so good that until you see him play it is quite unimaginable
But I as a rasika believe that music must do a lot of things .It must make you laugh,it must help you when you are sad , it must make you close your eyes in devation for the lord etc
Please inform me if any Msg kriti has moved you to tears. Now if I want to be happy and bouncy then his music is ideal
If you are sad and want to vent your sadness through your music I request you to hear TN krishnan play MARI VERE in anand bhairavi .This is so soul full and touching
Please reply back as I would like to Know your comments .
Sorry if you were offended

I have heard TNK accompany Semmangudi ( an old tape ) in a spectacular Diwakara Tanujam ( Yadukula Kamboji ). I understand TNK when young could dominate a kutchery when the vocalist was not up to it.
In this context, I have also heard a tape of MSG accompany TV Shankaranarayan in a concert at IIT Madras I think ( Enduku Peddala and Vijayambike, among others ). They certainly brought their A game that day. Sometimes the acoustics and the quality of the recording can cooperate well.
I am loathe to get into the ANOINTING business, but I think when unique styles are considered, Chowdiah certainly qualified. Many of GNB's later successful concerts involve him. It would also seem like he deliberately created a sea of cacophony from which could rise a few shining moments of truth. The double violin was probably difficult to control.
Does anyone know what has happened to the Gayathri veena ( several additional strings )
in nowadays performers ? Last I heard was Suryanarayana.

Hi
If Kartik is refereing to the cassette brought out by music today then I agree whole heartedly with him. Also worthwhile listening are TNK in the Music today series called Tyagaraja Kritis
As for who is the best it is almost impossible to point out just one person
We must enjoy all of them

Hi
I am an ardent of Lalgudi. His style is what sets apart from others though I definitely enjoy MSG and others. The way Lalgudi plays a krithi particularly in a solo concert is such that it brings out the sahitya. The Lalgudi pani is strictly against the practice of teaching only the swaras (this is being done by some instrumentalists). Again in an accompaniment, the LGJ follows the style of the vocalist be it the raga singing or the swara patterns.
MSG also has his own pani after his father's style and also has a lot of melody into his playing. He however uses a lot of Hindustani mix into the concert than LGJ

I am revisiting this page after a Loooong time. I remember writing a note here sometime back about the greatness of MSG and his style of playing. I have been collecting his music all through 15 years now and am proud of having a great collection.
I had made a nice friend named R Mohan (From Bangalore) when he read my quote about MSG. We became great friends. When we met after a long time, it was all the time the discussion about MSG. I personally treat MSG as God, the Great Emperor of Violin. God, because, he had given, happiness, joy, to all people who listen to him. I am especially very very jealous about Narmada because she can listen to her father MSG's music everyday, every second all throughout life. I have some wonderful collections both Carnatic and Hindustani. I many times got touched at heart when he plays krithis like subramanyena, Naadadinamata, Entha Vedukondu ra, Srivaralakshmi, Rama Bhakthi ..., Nooremi, Sakala Graha bala, Yethavunara, Raghuvara and many many more. More than anything else, I can imagine how involved he is in the violin when he plays it. I have some of his great renderings of Ragas Mohanam, Kalyani, Saramathi, Jhalavarali, Kamhbhoji, Athana, Lalitha, Bhairavi, Kiravani, Sindhubhairavi ( I have not seen any other person who can play sindhubhairavi like MSG), maand, and many more.... Listening to HIM is the ultimate relaxation one can have is what I feel. I myself play violin. I have been learning since 15 years. Playing concerts since 10 years or so. I call him an emperor because, an emporer can put any of his thoughts into action. He is exactly the same. Any phrase which comes into his mind, would get converted on to the Violin be it impossible for anyone else.
I happened to touch his feet many a times and feel people like MSG should be made chiranjeevis by god.
Being able to listen to him is a great boon for us.
I mena to hurt nobody but to praise my god to the best I feel from my heart. Pls excuse if anybody is hurt by what I wrote.
