I have found a few more new ones today.
Nandhavana Theru- Ramana Venkata Ramana- Kalyani
Kattumarakaran- Ketkuthadi Koo Koo- Mohanam
Kizhakkum Merkum- Puthu Ponnu Sirukuthu- Shankarabharanam
Btw, the raagam Maand's lakshana is
s g3 m1 p d2 S || Sn3d2pm1g3r2s
There are a few parogayams where the Rishaabam and the Nishaadam are allowed to enter into the aarohanam, I think.

Vel,
... about the kaadhal mayakkam song ... yeah I feel it is still sounds to me like suddha saveri to me ... same as 'koyil mani osai thannai'.
Sorry for not getting back to you earlier. I've been busy with work & a course that I'm taking this semester.

Here are some of the interesting/rare raga usages by Maestro...see if u had missed them earlier :-)
a) Amma amma endhan aaruyire - Uzhaipaali - Raga Kathyayini [Same as Jodi Nadhaigal from Anbe Odi Vaa - s r2 g2 p d1 s]
b) Saami En thaali kodi - shenbagame shenbagame - Raga Sriranjani [the most subtlest usage...lovely emoting by Chinna kuil chitra......an underrecognized gem]
c) Kozhi koovum nerathila - Vanna Vanna Kanavugal - Raga Revagupthi [is a derivative of Mayamalawagowlai...u can infact see the flavour of the parent raga creeping in throughout the song, with some Bhoopalam like feel too...revagupthi is s r1 g3 p d1 s !!]
d) Thaayum naane thanga ila maane - Engeyo ketta kural - Raga Kapi !!!
e) Kalyana Mela satham - Thambikku endha ooru - Raga Harikhambodhi [He has given pukka carnatic numbers like Pazhamudhir cholai, and pukka folk numbers like these...]
f) Thanga Thingal (Mallu song) - Manasinakaare - Raga Gambheera Naatai :-)
g) Petha manasu - Enna petha rasa - Raga charukesi is it not ? (That takes a genius...i had thought Arumbaagi mottagi poovagi was an excellent folkish sounding charukesi..this song is another in that category)
h) Thevai indha paavai - Andha oru Nimidam - Raga Anandha bhairavi (charanams take a sudden twist to pukka carnatic style...)
i) Vaana Mazhai Pole - Idhu Namma Bhoomi - Raga Khamas / Harikhambodhi [u need a beautifull mind to compose such a staggeringly simple yet blazing song..masterpiece ]
More later..[Rajavin Ramana Geedham has quite a few raga based compositions..will talk about it too]

Hi ALL,
I learnt today from a radio program that "Aatukutti muttai ittu" from 16 Vayadhinile is based on raga senchuruti..
First abt the raga..
It is best suited for folk flavour..Mostly 'kavadi chinthu'-s are based on the raga..it starts in Panchamam (Pa) and ends in the Panchamam of next octave..
Here is the link for a senchuruti based carnatic flute piece..after i knew that the song is based in the raga, i heard this to get a feel..the link is http://www.musicindiaonline.com/music/l/00010T (see the 8th track there...Folk Melody Ragam: Chenchuruti)...
The start of the song (in the above link) can be directly correlated with the high pitched "Kittapaavin paata ketaen, chinnappavaa nerila paarthen" of the aatukkutti song :-)
Just thought i should share it with u all...[Also remember the portion in Karumathur kaatukulle song in Virumaandi which ends with "un mudhugil seiyya poren savari"..that portion should also be senchuruti then... ]

Purv/Sriram,
See the arabhi section - those two numbers have been relocated..
Purv - u were right with "kathum kuyile", but i am not sure abt "karutha matchan" which i thankfully removed from arabhi list long ago..

Vel..
I wish 2 know your opinion on the song "Unnai THedi thedi". I think it s one song of IR which is very fresh without reminding any of his earlier compositions yet very melodious.

Rajesh,
It is almost on par with 'Yedhedho Ennam Valarthen", but i would the latter is just a touch unbeatable...
Regarding this song, the folowing things impressed me.
a) Simple tune - IR is always a winner when it comes to power packed songs that come in a simple melody platform...(raga pahadi, i thought).
b) Minimal orchestration - Though the synth was a bit disturbing, i heard that in the film, the pallavi of the song comes towards the climax wherein the synth is replaced by tabla...
c) Good rendition - Sadhana does sound a bit strained in the first two lines of the charanams (because of the high pitch), but overall, a commendable job from her, in terms of emoting.
Let me know ur thoughts too.

Seshan,
Sounds so...but then the song shifts to other ragas..but the portions u mentioned sound subhapanthuvarali...
CR/Aish,
It is another song that may not fit to a specific raga scale..some people claim t has kanada flavour, which to me is very remote..
Rajesh,
"Isaiyil thodangudhamma" had more class built in it than "nee partha"..just my opinion :-)

sreenivasan, Mohanam and Sudhasaveri differ in their third note.
This is the Mohanam scale: s r2 g3 p d2 S
Sudhasaveri scale: s r2 m1 p d2 S
Differences also include nyaasa swaras, or swaras in which tunes end on. In Mohanam, a common nyaasa swara is the Ga3. For Sudhasaveri, Pa is a common nyaasa swara, which isn't as common in Mohanam.
Now, I have a question: is 'Azhagu Nilaa Kaayum' in Oru Oorile Oru Rajakumari set to raagam Keeravaani, Mayamalavagowlai, Simmendramadhyamam, or Dhenuka? Any of the above? How about we discuss this song?
BTW, I have made a few more discoveries.
Vatti Edutha (Graamathu Minnal)- Charukesi
Kalyaana Panikkulamaa (same film)- Mayamalavagowla
Sanyaasa Mantra (Hey! Ram)- Sivaranjani
Anniya Kaattu Annane (Nandhavana Theru)- Kalyani

purv

Dear Vel,
With reference to Panner Pushpangale in Aval Appadithaan as Maand....I can categorically say that is not maand since Maand has major scale flavor as it is janya of Sankarabaranam. This song by Kamal is in minor scale with the start as "Pa Dha Ni Sa Ri Ga Maa" (for Panneeer Pushpangale) with the letter Pang of Pushpangale as Shadjam. I found the Karnatik web page is also mentioning wronly this song as Maand. What I feel is there is another major scale song "Uravaugal Thodarkadhai" which may be resembling Maand and the song name wrongly interchanged... Please check with others also and confirm me.

Also...
Ponni Nathi(Muthal Vasantham)-- Abheri
Adi Vaanmathi Oh Vaanmathi (Siva)-- Pahaadi
Nillu Nillu Ey Nitham Maathen (Dhanush)-- Sudhasaveri (diluted)
Vaan Nilaa Thenilaa (Kavithai Paadum Alaigal)-- Pahaadi
Ithu Maanodu Mayilaadum (Enga Thambi)-- Shankarabharanam
[is all this correct? Any disagreements?]
BTW, I think that the song 'Nee Illaatha Pothum' in Ilamai Kolam is not Maand because of the usage of Ma2, but since both Madhyamams are used, I was thinking it may be a Yamuna Kalyani.
